As a tour director I have traveled with all types of people and have made many lifetime friends. In the past I found that most of my passengers tended to travel in pairs as both couples and as friends rooming together. It was rare to find a woman traveling within the group as a single traveler. Boy, have the times changed and for the better! I am writing this article as I sit in a hotel room in Holbrook, Arizona. We have traveled Route 66 from St. Louis all the way to Santa Monica and now are homeward bound via Los Angeles. My passengers are on the most magnificent fifteen day motor coach tour and we are having a grand time. I have several single travelers with me. Over the years I have observed single women timidly venturing out on a vacation, traveling alone for the very first time in their lives. I have always admired their courage and work extra hard that first day to make them feel comfortable and secure. I have found that my other passengers recognize a new single traveler fairly quickly and welcome them immediately. I have witnessed women meeting their new best friends and finding new traveling companions and I have seen the kindness of married couples inviting singles to dine with them. It’s such a blessing to observe all of my passengers looking after and taking care of one another. I have come to realize that there is no such thing as a solo traveler. I know that I, as a tour director, always make sure that my singles are happy and safe, as I am also traveling as a single and understand that experience. I interviewed one of my travelers, Eileen, who frequently travels as a single. Traveling Alone? Hello Readers!

Welcome to February and the month of love!

This year’s focus is on a New Year a New You, so with that in mind this month’s theme is Love….Love Yourself so you can Love Others. Consider spending some time on you maybe with a new fitness plan and healthier nutrition to help rid those extra pounds. Take care of yourself with a therapeutic massage, new hair style, getting in touch with your spiritual self. Then enjoy your life by laughing more, joining friends and maybe taking a trip or two. There are many interesting articles this issue that might be able to help you with some tips on loving yourself. We all have many people we take care of: our kids, our parents, extended family members, our pets, friends, community members. The list goes on and on. If we do not take care of ourselves first, we are not able to fully take care of others. It is vital that we all work at changing the attitudes of our communities. This can be done through love for each other, caring about others around you. But it has to start with yourself. Love yourself and you will love others. Happy Reading!

A GREATER EXPRESSION OF OURSELVES

wellnessby Beth Thater-Boesel

A true reflection of yourself is found within your “Heart Center.” I have found that as I connect to my heart center, I am able to connect to my divinity within. We do not need to look outside of ourselves to connect to God/Higher Consciousness as we have so often been taught. All that you will ever need lies within you ready to spring forth at your beck and call. When I was shown to write this article, I received the clear message to speak and teach about our “Heart Centers.” This is where the True connections begin! We are the image of our creator. Therefore, our DNA has been programmed in the likeness of God/Higher Consciousness image. We need to fully understand this and operate in a higher awareness of the infinite wisdom which has been placed within each of us. There is no separation from source energy. We are each uniquely molded into our own vibrant colors and presented with gifts beyond our human understanding. I speak from my own experience and the experience of others who I have worked with. As we make a conscious choice to connect to our Heart Centers for a deeper understanding of our own divinity, our

Light within, and the gifts which are available to us, we ignite a passion so deep within us that it feels as if the Heavens opened up and moved directly into our hearts. I have experienced this and felt this often and let me tell you…there is no other feeling like it. Now, why am I telling you all of this? So many people tell me that they want a return to their divinity. They feel a longing, almost a loss, or disconnection. There is a feeling of separation and what they really want is to feel self-empowerment, liberation, harmony, a strong connection to source, and a certainty on whom they are what their divine “Soul Purpose” is. I had experienced this and I did not like this disconnect. So how do we propel ourselves to the next level of making a stronger connection to God Consciousness? We simply begin by remembering that we are the image of creator and ALL of creators gifts are stored up within each of us. We then start operating from our “Heart Space” every chance we get.

Here are some helpful tips to connect to your “Heart Space”

Find a quiet space in your home, room, office, or outside. This space should feel peaceful, safe, relaxing and undisturbed. Quiet your

mind by allowing the day’s events to roll off of you energetically. Take a conscious breath in and hold it for a few seconds and then release this breath. Feel your muscles relaxing and letting go. Take several conscious breaths in and release. Now, place your palms lightly on your “Heart Center.” This is your chest area. Bring your conscious awareness to the warmth of your palms and breathe in and let go several times. With each breath feel your heart expanding. If your mind begins to wonder just let the thoughts flow effortlessly away and return to your Heart Center feeling the warmth of your palms. When you have sufficiently connected to your Heart Center, keep your palms upon your heart space and call upon your “Mighty I AM Presence.” State “I AM” into your heart center and just allow a deeper connection to take place. You may feel an expansion taking place in your heart center so allow this expansion to build. Continue to state “I AM” into your Heart Center. Each time I do this, my heart expands so far out of my chest and the room I am sitting in. The feeling is indescribable. You may wish to start off

with only 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes of connecting. You can always build up to a longer period of time. What you are doing is coming into a greater realization that you are directly connected to source energy and all that you need to do is tap into your Heart Center and return to this divinity. I encourage you to mediate daily and connect to your “Heart Center.” I call the “Heart Center” our emotional gage or barometer. When we are in alignment with source energy, our heart centers will radiate with peace, love, and joy and a feeling of certainty. When we are out of alignment, our heart centers will tell us and show us often by a feeling or emotion of disconnect. My heart always tells me what I need to know.

MID AMERICA HORSE RESCUEby Margo Sutter

Mid America Horse Rescue’s mission is to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome ex-racehorses (Thoroughbreds) for their second chance opportunity. Without this opportunity, many of these horses would be terminated. After they are no longer able to race, many of the horses will be slaughtered. Being an animal lover, I wanted to put a stop to this! The Rescue’s mission is two-fold. Saving the horses from slaughter is the first part. The second part is pointed toward serving children and adults with physical and/or mental challenges. The horses are retrained and rehabilitated to work with mentally challenged people. The horses are adopted out to caring individuals after they have been retrained. The rescue facility began late 2008 and officially became a 501(C)3 charity in 2009. The rescue is located at 8743 LePere School Road in Millstadt, IL. The location is centrally located serving the bi-state area, actually just 12 minutes from downtown St. Louis, MO and 20 minutes from St. Louis County. We really NEED YOUR help to keep our program alive. We currently are seeking volunteers, 7 days a week. If you have no experience with horses, not a problem! If

you have always dreamed of getting to know a horse, spend time with a horse, learn about horses, this is a home waiting for you. We offer unconditional love, lifetime friendships, a great physical work out, laughter, joy and a peace you may have never found anywhere else! We have opportunities for donors who have a dream of creating a legacy for horses and children, sponsorship of horses available, foster and/or adoption opportunities available as well as volunteer opportunities. We need you as much as you need them............it does become a situation of who rescued who. If you have time, a place in your heart for horses, or wish to make a donation, please contact us soon!

ALZHEIMER’S AND ALKALOIDSby Linda Emmanuel

Medical doctors at Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and Duke did a joint study on Alzheimer’s. The 2011 results were published in Neurology. In the six-month study, one-half of the participants wore a 15-mg nicotine patch, and the other half wore a placebo. At the end of six months, the health declined in the participants wearing the placebo. Amazingly, the ones wearing the nicotine patch, their memory and health improved! In the article doctors did not state what causes Alzheimer’s or why the nicotine patch worked. If you read my previous articles you know something these medical professionals do not, that mycoplasma causes Alzheimer’s. So, what is in the nicotine patch that kills this cell-wall deficient bacterium?

AlkaloidsBacteria thrive in an acidic pH in the soil and the gut. Plants use nitrogen to

protect themselves from bacteria and insects. Nitrogen phytochemicals in plants are called alkaloids. When insets, fungi or bacteria attack the plant, the nitrogen kills them. Nitrogen in the plants we eat has the same effect on “bad” bacteria in our bodies.

NicotineAlkaloids affect the central nervous system. Nicotine is an alkaloid and in large quantities is deadly. In an NBC Dateline episode “Poison,” a husband was convicted of murdering his wife by poisoning her with nicotine. FYI: The tobacco plant contains over 60 alkaloids, some causing birth defects.Alkaloids are in: Eggplant (skin), kale, peppers, cinnamon, potatoes (skin), beets (root), coffee, cacao, bloodroot, oleander, and rhubarb.Plants high in nitrogen: ginger, spinach, carrots, cucumbers (skin), and other dark green vegetables.WARNING: A single dose (30-mg) of nicotine can be lethal. Pregnant women, children and pets should never come into contact with a nicotine patch.

Alzheimer’s FactsIn 2013, one in eight older (65+) Americans had Alzheimer’s, and more than 5 million Americans had Alzheimer’s

Every 71 seconds a new case of Alzheimer’s is diagnosedIn 2013, $203 billion was spent on Alzheimer’s healthcareIn America, Alzheimer’s is reaching epidemic proportions. To prevent Alzheimer’s, 80% of your diet should be fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid all regular and diet soda, refined sugar, and processed foods.

by Kevin McDonnell, PhD Trinkets Tea and Me has expanded to nearly 100 premium loose leaf teas. We are currently pursuing a new location. As always, the teas are at the lowest prices in the St. Louis area. Call (314)712-9321 for delivery. Shipping will be available next month. Our organic teas may offer numerous health benefits. In February we are highlighting the numerous health benefits of Oolong Tea. Oolong tea dates back over 400 years. It is a semi-green fermented tea with the fermentation process stopped when the leaves start changing colors. Therefore, it has the health benefits of both Black and Green Tea. Oolong tea is fragrant and described as having a fruity flavor. It is rich in antioxidants and contains vitamins A,B,C,K and E along with calcium, manganese, potassium, folic acid, niacin amide and other detoxifying alkaloids. The Oolong Tea Leaves being semi-fermented provide numerous polyphenolic compounds which is thought to be effective in controlling the metabolism of the body. Drinking Oolong Tea daily is considered to be effective in controlling obesity, aid in digestion, and can play an instrumental role in a weight loss program. In one animal study, mice given high fat and high sugar still showed weight loss and a decrease in body fat. These polyphenolic compounds found in Oolong Tea are also responsible for

removing free radicals in the body and may reduce the potential harm which is related to developing cancer, atherosclerosis, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. Oolong Tea seems to regulate the amount of blood sugar and insulin in the blood. Another scientific study indicated that drinking 3 cups of Oolong Tea throughout the day resulted in patients showing benefits in reduction of their eczema within one week. In a 2001 study 54% of subjects were found to show positive results in a variety of skin conditions. There have been several studies on the effect of Oolong Tea on bone mineral density and showed that people that consistently drank either Black or Oolong Tea for more than 10 years were significantly less likely to lose their bone mineral density over this span of time. We always suggest that you do your own review of research and claims, discuss the information with your physician, and draw your own conclusions on the possible health benefits of various Teas. However, note that research studies are likely to use the Best Premium Teas. So, don’t “shortchange” yourself. We offer Premium Teas, including many Oolong Teas, some award winning. Trinkets Tea and Me is an alternative to the “Overpriced High Pressure Mall Store”. We are relocting to Clayton soon! Until then Call us for all your tea needs: @ (314) 712-9321

FEBRUARY TEA TALK‘Oolong Tea’

Myofascial Release, Hot Stone Massage, Trigger Point, Medical Massage for Arthritis, Sports Massage, Indian Head Massage, Structural Relief Therapy, and Lymph Drainage are just a few of the many wonderful massage modalities that can provide healthy benefits for the body and mind. At Creekside Massage all of the above are available to you. Which will you choose? In this season of colds, flu, and sinus infections, you may need to jump start your immune system and a Lymphatic Drainage massage may be needed. The Lymphatic system transports white blood cells and antibodies that aid with immunity, and it removes waste on a cellular level. This type of massage is a very specific treatment in which the therapist uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase lymphatic flow in a specific pattern thus moving toxins out of the body. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have the benefit of the heart as a “pumping” mechanism. The circulation of lymph fluid requires pressure from muscle contraction, pressure fluctuation in the abdomen from breathing, or pressure from a massage. The specific pressure and patterns of touch follow the structure of the lymphatic system and assist in the contraction of lymphangions

(tiny muscle units). If there are scars, blockages, or surgical changes to the body, a trained Lymphatic Drainage therapist can move lymph past these obstacles. The precise design of Lymphatic Drainage massage moves the stagnant fluids in the tissue, allowing the body to detox and regenerate healthy tissue. Beneficial e!ects upon the immune system are delivered by moving the milky lymph fluid with the substances needed by the cells to fight o! disease. This massage is appropriate when recovering from surgery, burns, or infections. Lymph Drainage can visibly reduce edema (swelling), especially around the neck and face, gives relief from chronic pain and acute inflammation from allergies and eczema, and can address the loss of vitality that sometimes occurs with aging. When deciding to promote your health and making your choice for massage, consider trying Lymphatic Drainage. It is gentle and specific, and it will help you achieve your goals for immune health. At Creekside Massage, our goal is your health and wellness.

by Gloria MillerLOVE, ME

It’s amazing how much difference a comma can make! The title of this article looks like the salutation at the end of an informal note I might have written to my husband. And yet if there were no comma, it would sound like I’m imploring someone, even me, to love me. So I guess I’m doing both. I’m writing to tell myself that I need to, and should, love me.Dear Me,I’m not a vain person, except for my hair, which I admit, I color. But you know what? I’ve earned every one of those gray hairs that I cover. I think the gray makes me look way older than I am and I care enough about me to do what makes me happy and hopefully, look good. I love me! I don’t care who knows how old I am. I mean, really, who cares? And so what? I can’t change the year I was born. I can however, change my attitude about myself. Sometimes I beat myself up over silly things, like things I might have said or done, but that’s a part of me and who I am. Sometimes I chide myself because, who knows, maybe my mascara got smudged and I felt flustered and I let that ruin my day. But you know what? Those are my silly foibles that make me, me. My true friends accept me for who I am, and so should I.

I love me! I know I’m silly sometimes. I make mistakes. My mind wanders. I forget stuff. I’m not perfect, but who is? I am a flawed person. These traits and deficiencies, if you will, are parts of my personality and are not reasons to berate myself. These are characteristics that make me, me. It’s what differentiates me from anyone else. In our own way, we are all special, and that should be celebrated! I love me! I love me unconditionally and without judgment – or at least I will try. I hope that will help me to accept others unconditionally and without judging. I hope this positive frame of mind will always be with me and open me up to include new people, new experiences and new relationships that I otherwise might have dismissed. I love me! I accept me for all the roles I have played during my life. I am a daughter who was loved. I am a wife who is loved, and a mother of two who tell me they will always love me. So, in closing, dear me, I have learned that love is many things, including acceptance and respect. And in order to get love and be loved, I must start with myself.

Love, Me

HEART S.M.A.R.T GOALS FOR THE

NEW YEAR

If you are like thousands of Americans and have already faltered a bit on your New Year’s resolution, it might be helpful to take a step back and evaluate why this might have happened. Have other things in your life taken priority over your health? You must love yourself and put your health first so you can better take care of others. Try setting S.M.A.R.T goals and get back on track: Specific: Make sure that your goals are as specific as possible such as “I will aim to lose 2 lbs/week by limiting dessert to twice a week and exercising 4 days a week”. Be sure that you answer the 6 “W” questions: Who, What, Where, When, Why, Which, and Why. Measurable: Devise a plan

of how and when you will measure your goals. Try keeping a food diary and weighing yourself once a week. Attainable: Put small steps in place to help you reach your overall goal. Each time you achieve these steps you will make your goal more attainable. Realistic: Ensure that you are setting a goal that you truly believe in your heart can be accomplished. Timely: Giving yourself a time frame in which to achieve your goal will provide motivation. We all work faster when we have a deadline, right? Try setting a weekly timeline as well as a long term timeline. Overall, if you are committed to improving your health, you can achieve any goal that you set for yourself if you take it one step at a time. Remember, to keep your goals S.M.A.R.T. and always talk with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Running long distance is more than just having a physically-able body.As a result, I have conducted a list of different ways you can have apositive mindset when running a race; whether it be for a marathon, halfmarathon, or even triathlon (or training for any race).

Surround yourself withpositive people

When you surround yourself with positive people, you’re likely to havetheir positivity brush off on to you. Even if you’re a little timid andshy, it can help you break out of your shell if you surround yourselfaround positive, like-minded people. A great way of doing this is tojoin sports, or even go on Meet up and see if there are any long distancerunning groups around your area.

Remind yourself thatyou can do it

Every morning and night, months before the race even begins: you need toreassure yourself that you can do it, and you’re not going to fail. Apositive mindset is fundamental when

running a long distance race. Evenif you don’t feel you can do it, saying “I can do it” out loud can helpyou build your confidence, and eventually, you will genuinely believeyou can do it.

Eat healthlyHaving a healthy diet equates to a healthy mindset. Put the junk foodaway, and start eating healthier, more natural foods. Although it maynot seem like eating more healthy foods will impact your mentality atthe time, I can assure you that you will feel better after just one ortwo days of eating less junk.

Set realistic goalsInstead of wishing you could be as good as Joan Benoit or Frank Shorter, start wishing you were as good as you

can personally be. There’s nothingworse than setting an unrealistic goal and not even getting close toachieving it.

About the author...Curt Davies is a marathon enthusiast

and has built his own websitelocated at www.marathondriven.com. It’s filled with information regarding marathon running and training for

those over the age of 30.

Editor’s Note: While this article was written with running in mind, I can’t help but notice that all of these tips can easily apply to our life’s practice. A good way

to start off the New Yearand a New You!

HEALING WITHOUT MEDS QIGONG PRACTICE- PROMOTING LONGEVITY

Bring up your latest symptoms with a doctor and you will probably learn about the newest drug. With pharmaceuticals available for most problems, alternatives are rarely discussed, given America’s dependency on the thriving pharmaceutical industry. Prescribing a “quick fix” is not only easy, but most patients are satisfied with a prescription. When taking daily prescriptions to manage health issues, patients must keep in mind that their issues are only controlled, not resolved, and come with many side effects as well as suggested lifestyle changes. Years of fad diets, abandoned gym memberships and stale supplements have led Americans to lose faith in the health and wellness industry. “Experts” rave how exercise improves your blood pressure,

cholesterol, heart health, and bone density. Meanwhile, your friends who exercise look about the same, with an added limp or torn rotator cuff. Sounds like a great club to join!Taking control of our health requires us to gain a greater understanding of our bodies. Individuals might spend hours sculpting their biceps, yet have no idea where their liver is located. They run for hours without understanding proper breathing mechanics. They can barely walk without cortisone, yet continue their daily run. Sadly, we often instigate our own suffering, because we do not understand how our bodies work. Traditional fitness programs focus much attention on the body’s cardiovascular and muscular systems, yet do not address the diseases that attack the organs

and kill our loved ones each day. Introducing Medical Qigong (pronounced “Chee-gong”). A healing art with roots in Chinese Medicine, Qigong offers benefits similar to acupuncture. With protocols ranging from gentle to intense, the qigong practice focuses on moving energy cultivated in three energy centers traveling along the twelve meridians through the body to each of the organs. As energy flows, the body might encounter blockages, often linked to our emotions. This “stuck energy” may become toxic if left unbalanced, leading to disease and other ailments. Alternatively, if the body can return to balance, it will function more efficiently and remain disease-free. While Medical Qigong specifically addresses each of the organs, protocols

exist for ailments often treated through acupuncture. In effect, practitioners are able to establish a more active role in maintaining their body’s vitality and health. Other problems addressed by this practice include weight issues, bone density, fertility, circulation, joint pain, skin issues, fatigue, metabolic disease, psychological issues, among many others. Practitioners will see improvements in function of all bodily systems, balance, strength, coordination, flexibility, mobility, and overall well-being. To learn more about Medical Qigong,

Self-love, self-esteem, self-care. We often think a new hair style, outfit, weight loss, or other appearance related change/accomplishment will help us to feel better about ourselves. And while these things certainly don’t hurt, it doesn’t guarantee you’ll be feeling awesome about yourself. Maybe we think, ‘I need to be happier and look at the bright side of things, not take what I do have for granted.’ Also, great outlooks to have in life, except for when this mindset invokes complacency and indifference and leaves one settling. Boring! You want to know what I think helps one to feel better about him or herself? Too bad, I’m telling you anyway! I think getting to a place of self-love comes from the actions you take in order to live the life you want to live. Often times we deny ourselves the opportunities to really chase our dreams and instead force ourselves to fit into a preconceived notion of what we should do instead of what we want to do. This may be due to a fear of failure, a fear of success or maybe you don’t know what you really want to do with your life!

But what in the world does this have to do with feeling better about who you are? When you discover your passion and purpose, there is nothing compared to the feeling of worth you’ll get from fulfilling your true calling. It is empowering and usually lights an unstoppable fire within to make it happen. Sure there will be missteps and doubts along the way, that’s normal, but you’ll keep at it. And with each accomplishment comes a piece of pride you’ll begin to carry and these tend to diminish the feelings of failure clinging to you. It takes work though and you have to actively pursue an investment of self. You have to stretch your comfort zone and take risks but in the end you may be surprised what you learn about yourself and how it shapes you into a new version of yourself. Eventually, as you continue to work toward living the life you want to live, you’ll grow more in touch with yourself, your needs and your purpose which will strengthen your inner relationship and also shape the relationships you have with others. Once you can look beyond

by Katie MaeIGNITE YOUR PASSION

your own needs, as you have started to meet them, you can then begin to see the needs’ of others. You then will have the mental capacity and energy to be able to help others improve their livelihood as well which is what makes self love and care so important to all of us. Like putting on your oxygen mask first when in the airplane before helping others, if your needs are met and you feel this sense of self worth and love, you’ll be that much more capable of helping those around you. So get at it – figure out what you want to do with your life and make it happen! Get a plan together, network, journal, find a life coach, make a career change, move to a new town, take up that hobby, travel, volunteer, write– make it happen! Whatever it is you want to do for

yourself. For you and for everyone around you. Happiness is contagious but it also is the result of putting forth an effort and saying, ‘I am worth it.’

...clarity as to what that purpose is or looks like. Why can some people keep stepping out and making it happen? Have you ever considered that “those” people have Dream Champions in their corner? The challenge is finding a place to go where people will support your dreams AND be your biggest fans! The people that step out to make their dreams come true develop a community of people who can mentor, coach and guide them along their individual path. Then they can manifest their dreams. Such a place exists right here in St. Louis just for YOU called Gateway to Dreams! Gateway to Dreams has helped many dreamers and entrepreneurs like Melissa Range. Melissa discovered Gateway to Dreams a year and a half ago, and it changed her life. Melissa shared her story with me and says, “In my first meeting at Gateway to Dreams, I was introduced to a lovely woman named Meg Berry. Meg dreamt of opening a spiritual and inspirational boutique. She wanted to build a community of people to attend yoga, meditation, tai chi, energy classes and workshops geared towards love and light. MY dream was to have an office outside of my home to do energy healing plus health and wellness coaching. Meg and I began to pursue our dreams while meeting weekly with

the phenomenal Gateway to Dreams group. Meg opened Silver Lining in 2014 in Town and Country because of the dedication, vision, and support of Gateway to Dreams. They helped us identify, expand and achieve our dreams. I accomplished my dream of having an office outside of my home to do energy healing as a health and wellness coach. The best part is it’s located inside of Silver Lining! Karen Hoffman has her pulse on what is needed in our community, and it is an honor for me to be included.” When I asked Karen Hoffman, Founder-Gateway to Dreams, a non-profit located in Chesterfield Mall, how Gateway to Dreams helps to make dreams become a reality for people in our community, Karen explained why Gateway to Dreams is so unique yet so effective. “It’s a community of collaboration that helps make individual dreams come true because we are in the business of Moving Dreams Into Action! People will have some naysayers in their life, but we support the dreamer while being an incubator for their dream. Our DreamFests attract people who want to experience a positive place to dream that also helps them get the results of achieving a dream. Our DreamFests change the way people think and act to accomplish their dreams in life.” You might be saying to

yourself, “What type of person joins Gateway to Dreams?” The answer is people like YOU with personal, career and business dreams. People want help finding the connections, resources and guidance needed to fulfill their dreams. At the end of 2013, a woman named Patricia Adams embarked on a new professional path. She has been working with Gateway to Dreams since August of 2014 to accomplish her new goals. Pat says, “If you have your own business and need help with any aspect of it, there are coaches to help work with you. If you have a dream and you’re not sure how to get it off the ground, there are professionals there who will give you advice. They help guide you to make that dream become a reality. This is a safe haven for brainstorming ideas. People here actually want you to achieve your goals and want your business to thrive! Helping you build and succeed at your dreams is what Gateway To Dreams is all about.” The public is invited to come visit a monthly DreamFest every third Thursday at Gateway to Dreams from 1:00-3:00pm. Attending a DreamFest is simple: Just bring a positive possibilities attitude and experience communities of collaboration and strategic connections. It’s during this time people with goals or dreams

come as well as those who need help getting clarity around what those goals and dreams are. Come experience this safe haven for yourself. You will find a community that inspires people to love, support and encourage each other. They will assist you in moving toward your dreams by sharing ideas, information and introductions! Gateway to Dreams celebrated its One Year Anniversary in January 2015. It all got started because of the love and gift Karen has for helping people by connecting them with a community through collaboration. This is a safe environment for people to uncover their dreams, build their dreams with a community of champions and look at life more positively by moving dreams into action through a community of support. Don’t miss out on taking the first step that could connect you with a community that can be your own personal Dream Champions. Plan to attend the next DreamFest on February 19th from 1:00pm-3:00pm located at Gateway to Dreams, Chesterfield Mall located next to Dillard’s – lower level. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 brought prosperity to South Carolina and cotton quickly became its hottest commodity. On December 20 of 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and suffered massive damage during those years. The war shattered the once prosperous city and brought in its place, poverty and hopelessness. Charleston began to prosper again in the 1970’s and today is a vibrant and captivating city known for its art, music, local food, and fashion. Here it easy to lose oneself in gumbo, fried oysters, shrimp and grits and lowcountry boils. Today the descendants of slaves weave intricate sweetgrass baskets, a traditional art form passed down for generations. During the plantation era, sweetgrass baskets were used in the fields for carrying crops and it was not unusual for plantation owners to sell the baskets for extra income. It is the oldest form of African artwork in the United States, and no trip to Charleston would be complete without a stop at a sweetgrass basket stand. One of Charleston’s most unique stops is at the Charleston Tea Plantation Located on beautiful Wadmalaw Island, just 20 miles south of downtown Charleston, it is the only working tea plantation in the United States. The plantation uses the Camellia sinensis plant to produce a delicious black tea. The plantation packages American Classic Tea and sells six different flavors in tea bags or the loose tea form. The tea is harvested from May to October and the plantation offers tours through the farm and tasting center. Savannah, named for the

Savannah River, is just a two hour drive from Charleston. Established in 1733, it was a strategic port during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Millions of tourists visit Savannah each year savoring its rich architecture and historic buildings. This is where you will find the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. Savannah consists of 22 park like squares in the historic district and each one retains its own charm and uniqueness. Here you can rest on park benches, surrounded by aged oak trees draped with Spanish moss. Take a moment to breathe in the scent of flowering plants and listen to the sound of water coming from decorative fountains. Savannah today is the fourth largest container ship port in North America and its bustling riverfront area is a delight to stroll. It is on the river front that the The Waving Girl statue is located. The statue recalls a bittersweet story that intrigues both locals and visitors alike. The daughter of a sergeant stationed at Fort Pulaski, Florence lived in a cottage along the river near the entrance to the harbour. Life was lonely for Florence and she was always seen with her faithful Collie waving a handkerchief and welcoming incoming ships into Savannah. At nightfall, she would stand by with lantern in hand to greet the ships. She fell in love with a sailor who promised to come back and make her his wife. Florence waited, but to no avail, for the sailor never returned. She continued greeting every single ship that approached the harbour for forty four years and welcomed over 500,000 vessels into Savannah. Florence grew into a

Savannah legend and sculptor Felix De Weldon fixed her image in immortality. Florence was beloved by seamen for decades and her statue was delivered to the city free of charge, by ship, of course! In 1943 the SS Florence Martus, a Liberty Ship, was christened in her honor. The Waving Girl statue is just one of many delights that Savannah offers the traveler. DIRECTIONS Tours will be visiting Charleston and Savannah in April of 2015. Come along and let the stories of these two captivating cities become a part of your story and life!

I have been very fortunate to travel to many places throughout the world but when I’m asked my favorite destination, I don’t hesitate at all: It’s ALASKA!I love majestic landscapes and they just don’t get any bigger or more majestic than our 49th state. In a world of technology and instant media access, we, as human beings, need a place to retreat to and replenish our souls. We need to see and hear the ancient sound of glaciers calving into a cold sea. We need to see a mama grizzly bear and her sow digging up roots in Denali National Park. We need to see Bald eagles soaring past mountain tops and we need to see a humpback whale breach out of a calm and steady sea. We need to reconnect with the primal, wild

parts of our world and when we do, our own souls rejoice and we become replenished. It is a privilege to share this part of our world with others on DIRECTIONS Tours. June is such a beautiful month to journey here, as the mountaintops are still snow covered and all of the animals are waking up and exploring the beginnings of summer. It’s the start of the Alaska season at this time of year and the towns aren’t overrun with tourists like they will be later in the summer. The weather in June is just perfect for exploration. I recommend that my travelers layer as we typically experience weather that ranges from the mid 50’s to near 80 degrees. So, what do I like to do while in Alaska? The very first thing I do is breathe deeply. There is nothing that compares to fresh Alaskan air; it feels like you are breathing for the very first time in your life. In this case, it’s good to inhale! Exploring the local galleries and eateries is something I always look forward to. I never miss the opportunity to have a meal of fresh crab legs and lobster bisque at Tracy’s King Crab Shack ( a discreetly hidden treasure in Juneau!) Exploring Creek Street in Ketchikan and touring Dolly’s Brothel is always a highlight as is

taking in the wonderful, hip art at Coho Soho Art Gallery. I make time to walk the trails and neighborhoods and marvel at the precariously perched Cliffside homes accessed only by long, narrow wooden stairs. I wonder what it would be like to live here and climb those steps every day. Haines, Alaska is

another port that I always look forward to visiting and and I revel in its early history. I like to see how the old Army Barracks are coming along every year, as people are treasuring them and renovating them into the handsome buildings that they deserve to be. Ambling through the Alaskan Indian Arts building I watch skilled Tlingit carvers slowly create wondrous totem poles out of raw wood. I explore small galleries where the owners are

happy to see their customers and take the time to make you feel welcome. I sit in a pub and enjoy an Alaskan White, a glorious local brew. I catch a ferry to Skagway and walk the wooden planked town where the gold rush began in 1897 and I think about how brave and daring those Klondikers

must have been. I book passage on the White Pass narrow gauge railroad far into the wilds to Whitehorse, and feel joyous when I spot a black bear. Lighthearted is how Alaska makes me feel and that feeling always lasts a very long time.Save money and stroll the sights with me, your personal Alaska guide! I am thrilled to journey again!

THE CARDINALS ARE HEADED TO JUPITER!!!

SPRING TRAINING 2015

13∙ ACTIVE LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE ∙ FEBRUARY 2015 ∙ www.activelifestylesmag.com SEE THE CARDS PLAY IN PERSON: www.cardsspringtraining.com GO CARDS!

“Let’s Go Cardinals… Let’s Go!” is a familiar cry by the fans in St. Louis every year, and it follows the Red Birds south to their Spring Training home in Jupiter, Florida. The Cardinals are gearing up with many new names and faces on the roster, fans can get to know the new players and see their favorites returning. Spring Training allows fans not only to familiarize themselves with the new players; it is a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with them as well. Roger Dean Stadium is one of the best stadiums to have a personal contact and view of your favorite guys on the field. Any seat in the stadium gives fans the closest seats to the action than any Spring Training facility in Florida. If that is not close enough, enjoy taking in one of the six practice fields behind the stadium prior to a game! Players are

much more accommodating during spring training when it comes to signing autographs. Get there early and be prepared to stand on the sidelines during practice. Players usually enjoy chatting with fans and signing autographs just after practices prior to the actual game. Watch for familiar faces in the crowd too. Many Red Bird players enjoy watching the games on their days off the field. They, too, enjoy the games in the stands and are usually friendly to sign autographs or shake your hand.

To make the most of your up close and personal time with players remember these tips:

• Arrive Early for practices located behind the stadium.• Bring something you want signed. A jersey, hat, ball, photo, card or something to write on.• Have a Sharpie (or similar)

permanent black marker (the players will not have one)• Be respectful to your fellow fans and limit your time with a player and always let the kids go first!• Be respectful to the players, remember that they are working and may not always have time to sign autographs and chat.

CAN INVESTORS LEARN FROM YOGA FOLLOWERS?

It’s probably not on your calendar, but World Yoga Day takes place on Feb. 24. As more people have discovered its healthful benefits, yoga has grown in popularity. But whether or not you practice yoga, you can apply its lessons to other areas of your life — such as investing. Specifically, consider the following yoga-related themes and how they might translate into investment habits that may be beneficial:• Balance — If you observe advanced yoga practitioners, you will be amazed at the balance they exhibit during certain positions. But for serious yoga students, the idea of “balance” goes beyond physical movements

and extends to a concept of life that emphasizes, among other things, an avoidance of extremes. As an investor, you too need to avoid extremes, such as investing too aggressively, too conservatively or too sporadically. By building a balanced portfolio, and by investing regularly, you can help improve your chances of making progress toward your financial goals. • Flexibility — Among its many benefits, yoga helps people increase their flexibility — and greater flexibility results in fewer injuries and an increased capacity to enjoy many physical activities. As an investor, you need to be flexible enough to adjust your portfolio as needed while still following a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for your individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. • Relaxation — For yoga students, proper relaxation is essential to achieving mental equanimity, emotional balance and inner strength. But relaxation doesn’t always come easily — even experienced yoga practitioners need to work at it. As an investor, you also may need to train yourself to relax because, given

the ups and downs of the market, it’s not hard to become overwrought and make ill-advised decisions based on short-term events. Staying calm and maintaining a long-term view of things may help you make better investment decisions. • Positive thinking — Our own thoughts and actions are largely responsible for creating our happiness and success, according to yoga teachings. And positive thinking can play a key role in investing, too. For example, if you were to constantly look at negative headlines, you might conclude that it is pointless to invest for the future because external events — economic instability abroad, political squabbles at home, natural disasters and so on — will just disrupt your plans. Consequently, you might decide not to invest, or invest in such a way that can make progress toward your financial goals difficult. But if you maintain a positive attitude, you may be more inclined to invest wisely for your future. • Visualization — In yoga, visualization is often used to reduce stress. At any given time, you might

find it difficult to relax, but you can use your imagination to see yourself — and put yourself — in a relaxed state. As an investor, you need to visualize your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, before you can define a strategy to help you work toward them. By seeing yourself where you want to be, you’ll be motivated to take the actions necessary to work toward getting there. Try putting the principles of yoga to work — they may help you become a better investor.

VALENTINE’S IN THE LOOP It’s Valentine’s Day, and the mad rush is on to the florist, the card shop, and the candy store. Why not try something different? Mindful Mandala Events and Create Space are presenting Radial Romance, a companion painting experience in the Loop on February 14, 2015. The one and a half hour workshop celebrates love with the creation of a two-canvas expression that captures the memories of the day for years to come. Tastings of coffee, coconut, and chocolate add to the sensual experience. Designed for non-artists, it is a wonderful opportunity to surprise someone special in your life--a partner, a friend, a child, a parent. Shevah Pinkus of Mindful Mandala Events describes the event as a “celebration of the senses” designed to help people connect in a meaningful, fun way. “When all the senses are engaged, our spirit becomes alive and most radiant. This is where we can fall in love again and again. “ She smiles as she describes the experience. Shevah, a teacher of art for many years, has partnered with Julia Li of Create Space; an Artisan’s

Market located at 6323 Delmar Blvd in the Loop. Over thirty local artisans, specialty food makers, and craft makers are celebrated in Create Space, designed to provide something for everyone. Together, these talented women hope to create a Valentine’s Day that is one-of-a-kind for the St. Louis Community. Radial Romance takes place on Saturday, February 14, 2015. Workshops begin at 2, 4, 6, and 8 p.m. Step by step instructions will lead participants through paint, symbols, and connection with each other through the ancient art of the mandala, a sanskrit word meaning circle. The cost for the experience is $50 a couple, and includes supplies, canvasses, and tastings/pairings. Admission to Create Space is free of charge. Information and sign-ups can be found at www.mindfulmandalaevents.com, or call Karen at 636-465-6722.

Judy’s Tips For February

silverspaceWARNING SIGNS THAT A PARENT IS IN TROUBLE

by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law If your parent is having difficulty performing the tasks of daily living, such as: cooking housekeeping, home maintenance, bill paying, and grooming /hygiene, it bears further investigation. If your parent was a good cook or housekeeper, or very conscientious about paying bills, and you see a marked change in these habits, then there is reason for concern. On the other hand, if your mother is recently widowed and is having difficulty with the bills, she may just need a helping hand until she can master these new skills. If your parent is experiencing a decline in health concerning any of these issues: loss of appetite, change in sleeping patterns, loss of hearing, incontinence, or becoming accident-prone, medical intervention is required. All of these symptoms can be attributed to medical conditions that can be treated. If your parent is confused, suspicious or fearful and this has not been a part of their personality or seems exaggerated, then this is a sign that there is a problem. If your parent goes to a familiar place and can’t get home or doesn’t remember the names of longstanding

friends or family, it is time for you to act.If your parent focuses on negative attitudes and behaviors, this is often a sign of depression. If you notice a loss of initiative in the pursuit of hobbies or socializing, and this is a substantial change, then there is an issue that must be addressed. If your parent is drinking more alcohol than usual, or using medication inappropriately, this is a sign that something is amiss.

How to Approach Your Parent Deciding to intervene on behalf of your aging parent is one of life’s most difficult decisions.First, take an inventory of your role in your family and your parent’s perception of you. Ask yourself: Am I the most appropriate person to address these issues—should I involve my siblings or a professional?Keep in mind your parent’s personal style. Are they very private or are they forthcoming? Reflect back on how other family matters have been handled for guidance on what style may be most comfortable for everyone. Conveying your love and concern is important. A supportive approach is critical. Starting the conversation with an

“I” statement such as “I am concerned because “I am worried” or “I feel”. Using these statements ensures that your parent will not feel blamed or judged. In using ‘I” statements’, you are expressing the feelings to which you are entitled and which are harder to argue with. If you have a family member or mutual acquaintance who has had to deal with a similar problem, use that experience as a point of reference for discussion. The goal is for you to engage your parent in a conversation. Make sure you are talking with and not at your parent. You will gain more by using tentative, exploring questions such as “What things bother you?” and “What do you want to do about this problem?” Ask questions to help analyze your parent’s plans. It is important not to present answers or conclusions. Provide your parent with possible resources and information. Some resources are the family physician, mental health professional, ministers/ rabbis, parish nurses, or other geriatric care professionals. If your parent is capable, involve them in the process - empower them.Lastly, be patient and keep a sense of

humor. If things get too testy, drop it and try again later.

Important Topics to Discuss With Your Parent:

Durable Power of Attorney Healthcare Directive

Last Will and Testament Living Trusts and Irrevocable Trusts

Unfortunately, many times people wait too long to have their estate planning documents prepared. It is important to take this action while your parent is still competent. When to seek legal advice: Sometimes a person’s mental health deteriorates rapidly and unexpectedly. In those situations, it is recommended that you seek legal advice on how to proceed to care for your parent(s).Each situation is unique. One of the reasons this firm has continued to offer an initial free consultation is that it gives both the client and our staff an opportunity to evaluate the specific issues and determine what steps will be of the most benefit to the individual(s).To obtain more information, please

It’s February already, which means tax time! After speaking with Winston with H & R Block, I picked up specific information about a program which primarily assists seniors and those who are disabled. If you meet certain guidelines, you could qualify for a tax credit on your Missouri returns. Some of you may have already heard of the Property Tax Credit—commonly referred to as Circuit Breaker Tax Credit. If you already know about it, you can share this information with your family and friends who haven’t yet heard about it! Firstly, there are 4 main categories open for eligibility in the 2014 program. You or your spouse must a) be 65 or older as of 12/31/2014

and a MO resident for all of 2014; b) be 100% disabled and a MO resident; c) be 100% disabled while in any branch of the service (service-connected 100% disability); d) reach 60 years of age by 12/31/14 and be receiving social security benefits as a surviving spouse. Next, there are residency requirements. Real estate taxes must be paid on the property where you are residing and you must be one of the following: a) a home owner; b) a renter; c) a boarder in a home where you rent a room; d) living in a hotel in Missouri; or e) an owner or renter of a mobile home. There are additional guidelines which may apply to your circumstances. Lastly, there are income limitations. If you are a single

homeowner your gross 2014 income cannot exceed $30,000 and married filing combined cannot exceed $34,000. If you are a single renter your maximum gross income limit is $27,500 and married filing combined is $29,500 maximum. If you believe you may have qualified in the past for this tax credit but didn’t claim it, you may attempt to go back a maximum of three years. The amount of tax credit you receive back is based upon a formula using the amount of real estate property taxes you paid and the amount of your gross income. You will be required to show proof of monies paid toward the taxes. If you would like additional information about this program you may call Winston’s H & R Block office

at 636-861-2050, you can visit www.dor.mo.gov , you can contact your local Area Agency on Aging office, or you can call me so that I can connect you with the right expert!

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?by Dr. Brandi Pettis

What’s keeping you from getting hearing aids? Maybe you’re afraid you will be perceived as old or you think your hearing isn’t bad enough yet? Maybe your friend has hearing aids and never wears them? There are many reasons why people decide not to have their hearing tested and not to purchase hearing aids. Allow me to share several reasons you SHOULD have your hearing tested and you SHOULD invest in hearing aids if recommended by your audiologist. Hearing loss can be a significantly impairing condition that affects all areas of one’s life. The research paints a compelling picture of the cognitive, social, psychological, and health effects of hearing loss. Some conditions known to be associated with hearing loss are dementia, cognitive decline, brain shrinkage, depression, and higher risk of falling. For those who are still in the workforce, uncorrected hearing loss has a negative impact on overall job effectiveness, opportunity for promotion, as well as lifelong earning power. Optimized hearing is

critical to effective communication. Why wait when you can hear better now? The number one reason people purchase their first set of hearing aids is they realize their hearing has changed. The second reason is pressure from family members who are negatively impacted by the individual’s hearing loss. In most cases, hearing loss occurs gradually. By the time you recognize a need for hearing aids, your quality of life may have deteriorated unnecessarily. The average age people first wear hearing aids is age 70, even though the majority of people with hearing loss are below age 65 and nearly half of all people with hearing loss are below age 55. Everyone’s situation is not the same. Just because hearing aids may not have worked well for a friend or family member, doesn’t mean they won’t work well for you. The provider of hearing services is just as important, if not more so, than the particular hearing aids themselves. Hearing aids are just the product. Your audiologist is critical in the rehabilitation process. What your audiologist and a good set of hearing aids can offer is a chance to communicate with loved ones and to be active and plugged-in to life again. We challenge you to be brave, be bold, and choose to live a life rich with sound!

AGING IN PLACEby Kevin Kohler

It can oftentimes be a difficult decision for seniors and their families when facing the fact that their existing home is becoming full of barriers. They can’t get up and down the stairs. Showers and tubs are now hazardous areas for falls or too difficult to get in and out of. Upper cabinets are now out of reach when they’ve become confined to a wheelchair. The examples can go on and on where the home that they’ve spent the last 40, 50 years or more is just now too difficult to keep living there. So, the discussions begin... Do they need to go to an assisted living center? A very viable option, but for many seniors, it can be viewed as a loss of independence and control, and can be very costly. Do they move in with a family member? This is a common enough avenue, however, it can come with feelings that they’re being a burden and can create stress in the family member’s home. Or, do they downsize to an “age-friendly” living community of villas or townhomes that are designed for a senior living style... The choices are many, and I recommend anyone utilize the services of HealthCare social workers, care managers, talking with directors of assisted living centers, and other professionals such as full service REALTORS with a CSHP designation (Certified Senior Housing Professional). They can help provide a wealth of information to help inform how each option can assist. But, ultimately, when you look for what our seniors want, the vast majority will say that they want to maintain their INDEPENDENCE and CONTROL as long as they can... meaning, they want to stay in their own home for as long as they can. We can help provide them that option with a renovation loan. Whether on their existing home, or to help purchase/downsize to a new home, a renovation loan can be utilized to help modify/renovate the home to eliminate barriers and provide accessibility, and help the senior maintain that independence. With a renovation loan, it is a refinance or new purchase mortgage, where we will add the costs of renovation into their

mortgage. We will have the client obtain bids (for seniors, preferably through a contractor that specializes with senior modifications), and those bids are provided to an appraiser. The appraiser will determine the “future” value of the property, based on the assumption of the work that will be completed. We would then close on the mortgage, and the renovation funds are held in escrow, to pay out for the contractor as he then completes the renovations to the home.In this sense, we can modify a home, to replace the steps in the front of the home with a decorative ramp. We can remodel a kitchen to have all lower shelves and cabinets within reach. New tubs and showers can be installed that are accessible. Chairlifts installed where the stairs are, and doorways widened for wheelchair/walker ease to get through. The list can go on and on, as to the renovations that can be done to help meet the needs of the client. The large benefit, is that when significant modifications need to be done, the costs can start getting up there. Some seniors may comfortably have the means to pay cash for those improvements, but for those who want to retain their savings and retirement funds to last them many more years, the renovation loan is an option to keep more of their money in their accounts. A mortgage payment on their home will often be less than the costs of moving to an assisted living center. All in all, my intent is to inform as many people as I can, so they are aware of this option, when it comes to working with seniors. It is not to detract from the other options a senior may have with assisted living, as those are all great services that can be provided as well. I was just lucky with my own father, as I watched him progress in age and deteriorating health (diabetes, shoulder replacement, reduced mobility, etc.) that he was able to modify his home to stay there and where we could bring the grandchildren and sit with him in front of the family fireplace.

EACH OF US HAS A LEGACY TO SHARE!by Mike Stith, Gateway To Dreams

Have you ever visited a family member or friend in a care center or hospice center? If so, do you recall walking down the hall and seeing people sitting alone in their rooms? While my mom was ill a few years go before she passed away, I spent many hours, sometimes days, with her in hospital and care center. While visiting her, I often saw people alone in their rooms with very few visitors. I would say hello when I had a chance, but not nearly enough. The story of my mother’s life and passing was a key inspiration in my life, and fueled my passion to create the One Legacy community. It all began with a few simple questions, as I mentioned in last month’s ALM article. Mom and I sat together quietly for several days in the hospital prior to

her admission to hospice. I was lucky enough to have a chance to ask her questions about her own childhood and life. But I couldn’t help but wish that so many of the others guests had someone to ask those simple questions that mean so much. While my mom was answering questions about topics like her favorite pets, family memories, etc., I realized I was learning more about her personal legacy than ever before. This experience, and this wish for others to be able to answer the same questions, inspired me to develop a new program called Legacy Sharing. It’s very simple, but also extremely rewarding for individuals, families, and communities. It provides the special people in our lives an opportunity to share their stories and legacies with

others. The Legacy Sharing Program assists care centers in facilitating, gathering and publishing real stories written by residents and their families, creating an endless personal legacy that inspires readers around the world. You, too, can experience the magic for yourself! Individuals can read or submit a story to be published for FREE! For more information on how you, and your family and friends can preserve memories and create inspiration, please visit us online at www.onelegacy.com. Community groups can schedule a Legacy Sharing Program for one of their events. Storytelling and sharing exercises have proven to enhance healing and recovery. If you are a Director or an Activity Staff member for a

care center, ask about how we can make it easier for you to enrich quality of life for your residents. We have a variety of tools for you to facilitate these individual or group reminiscence activities.

We invite you to sign up for our free newsletter and view the latest in amazing real stories from around the world! Stop by today to visit our website or in person at Gateway to Dreams!
