    HISTORY

    The oldest in the Philippines, the Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in May 1871 by virtue of the

    Modification of the Moret decree. During the Spanish regime, the course was one of six years. In

    1901; when the American administration took over, the curriculum was reduced to four years.Then in 1916 it was further reduced to three years until 1930 when the four-year curriculum

    leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy was re-adapted. Finally in 1954,

    Pharmacy was made five years. In 1984, te degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy was reduced

    to four years again with the integration of some subjects.

    The Faculty of Pharamcy continued to grow with the addition of courses leading to the degree of

    Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1962. In both cases, University of Santo Tomas has gained

    the distinction of inrtoducing these courses for the first time in the Philippines. The Faculty of

    Pharmacy has the distinction of being the First College in the University of Santo Tomas to admit

    lady students in 1924.

    In 1986, the degree of Bachelor in Science in Botany was offered in the Faculty of Pharmacy.

    Thomas Aquinas Research Complex

    THE MAIN VENUE FOR RESEARCH IN UST IS THE THOMAS AQUINAS RESEARCH Complex. Thisis a four-story building named after the patron saint of the university. It is a semi-centralized

    system for the productive exchange of ideas among researchers in the fields of science and

    technology, social sciences and education, arts and humanities, and the ecclesiastical

    sciences.

    The building houses research centers and research laboratories where faculty members and

    students work together to generate new knowledge or new technology in their field of

    specialization. It also has seminar/workshop rooms and an auditorium where knowledge is

    shared and disseminated.

    Research Cluster for the Health Sciences

    THE RESEARCH CENTER FOR THE HEALTH SCIENCES ASSISTS FACULTY members in the fields ofmedicine and surgery, nursing and rehabilitation science. Based in the Faculty of Medicine and

    Surgery, the center was

    tasked in 2003 to provide laboratory facilities for medical research, evidenced by the

    establishment of the Molecular Biology Laboratory. Currently, it is involved in multiple research

    projects primarily using molecular binding techniques.

    Research work in the rehabilitation sciences has focused on health and fitness, physiologic

    testing and exercise, and resistance training for collegiate and elite athletes. These studies were

    previously carried out in the Center for Research on Movement Science, which is an evidence

    translation group under the Center for Allied Health Evidence of the University of South

    Australia and an evidence synthesis group of the Joanna Briggs Institute in Australia.
