• History : Started in 1890.• Charitable Trust : Registered in 1956.• Employee Strength : 5,000.• Number of Dabbas: 2, 00,000 Dabbas every
day i.e. 4,00,000 transactions every day.
• Time Taken : 4hrs for pick up/drop & 4hrs 30mins for reverse pick/drop.
• Total Area Covered : 60kms to 70kms (Virar-Churchgate, Kalyan/Panvel- CST).
• Education : 80% People illiterate, rest have studied till school or jr.college.

• Marathas of Varkarisect from the remote villages of Maharashtra.
• Dabbawalas were the warriors in army of Chatrapati ShivajiMaharaj.

external excellence programs such as six sigma go hand-in-hand with a high level of internal excellence”
• Prof. Pradeep B. Deshpande has explained to us that Dabbawalas possess a high level of internal excellence.
• Dabbawalas themselves did not know that their high level of internal excellence as a consequence of their bhakti was hugely responsible for their exemplary performance. They were just doing their job and they knew they had to do it well. The Dabbawalas are "Varkaris" from Pune region in Maharashtra.”

Working Of MTBSA• Working time 9 am to 6 pm• Cost of service :Rs.- - - - -

• Each one is a share holder.• per month on an average of
each Dabbawala.• Diwali Bonus : One month’s
salary by customer (not from every customer).
Pick Up Dabbas From Residences, Bring Them To The Nearest Stations For Sorting.
• 9:00am - 10:30am • This time period is utilized for collecting dabbas from
different places like homes, hotels, messes, etc. & brought to the respective nearest stations.
• Signals with red light, no entry, etc. are crossed.
Uploading Dabbas in the Train at the Source Station & Journey
• 10:30am - 11:30am. • This time period is the journey time. The Dabbawalas load the
wooden crates filled with tiffins onto the luggage or goods compartment in the train.
• Generally last compartment of the train is chosen.• 12 coach train, about 4,000 commuters, hundreds of disputes -
But no excuses, Duty First.
Downloading & Sorting At Destination Station
• 11:30 pm -12:00 pm.• The dabbas are down loaded from the train train.• Sorting is done as per the destination address.
Delivery Of Tiffins
• 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm.• Tiffin's are delivered at the destination
Address.
Dabbawalas Having Their Own Dabbas
• 1:00 pm - 1:30pm.• This is the Lunch time.• Dabbawalas carry their food with them.• Area wise they sit together & have lunch.• The family that eats together stays together.

Collection Of Empty Dabbas & their Sorting At The Destination Station
• 1:30pm - 2:30pm• Here on begins the collection process where the
Dabbawalas have to pick up the Dabbas from the offices where they had delivered them.
• The dabbawalas meet for the segregation as per the destination suburb.
• Sorting is done.
Reverse Journey
• 2:30pm - 4:00pm • Reverse travelling by train taking the
empty Dabbas.
Sorting at Source Station
• 4:00pm - 4:30pm.
Delivering The Dabbas at Home Again
• 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm• This is the stage when dispatch takes place. The
group meets up at origin area & the empty Dabbas are delivered at the respective residences, messes, etc.

• In India the honor of being the Royal Guest at Price Charles Marriage was received by Dabbawalas & the Queen of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
Sending gift containing Puneri Pheta, Saree, Kolhapuri Chappal for Prince Charles and Queen Camilla Parkar for their Wedding.

under Mr. C. K. Pralhad.
• For 4 days they traveled with Dabbawalas collecting some

C. K. Prahlad met President Mr. K. R. Narayan &
Dabbawalas & Dabbawalas got Six Sigma standard.
