Drama @ WVHAn Open Letter to WVH Theatre Arts Group:

Through limited time, changing teachers, march break, competing obligations, car accidents, school trips, back surgeries, foot surgeries, sprained thumbs, tests, work and all other challenges life has to offer our Theatre Arts class conquered the Regional Drama Fest which was held on April 14 & 15th at the LSPU Hall. Our students took to the stage and showed exactly how poised, brave, hardworking and talented the students at Waterford Valley High really can be.

They performed West Moon in front of a full house of strangers, with just one run on stage, and

made us all proud beyond words. Above and beyond that, they also took part in a full day of exciting (sometimes unusual) workshops and watched three nights worth of productions by the rest of the schools involved. All the while they conducted themselves with energy, leadership and commitment.

Thank you all for your hard work, creativity and willingness to jump out of this particular plane with me. We took a big chance. Our chutes opened, we hit the ground and no one broke any bones. I am proud and honored to be your teacher this term and I know everyone in this building is too.

Community ConnectionsStudents from WVH gave a much appreciated concert to residents of Agnes Pratt home at Christmas, and we were invited to perform once again at their Spring Variety Concert on April 26. The Chamber Choir and some individual students perfomed four songs and the residents thoroughly enjoyed the performance!

Look Who’s BloomingOur school’s mental health committee did a special display this spring for our staff to help spread positive messages. A bulletin board display was done up full of flower petals. A picture of one of our staff memebers was printed and put in the center of each flower.

The committee then wrote a special message on one of the petals about that person then invited other staff members to do the same. Here is a picture of the Mental Wellness Committee after the Post-it Project. The goal was to send positive messages to everyone in the school such as “You are Courageous” or “You are Loved”.

Greece 2016Over the Easter break, 52 students and 8 teachers from WVH participated in its first EF tour! Despite some poor weather in Toronto, everyone arrived in Athens on time and ready to begin the adventure. Our first few days were spent in Athens. We visited the Parthenon, including the temple to Athena and the theatre of Dionysus. Day two brought us to the ancient oracle of Delphi and the temple to Apollo. On the way we visited an olive farm where we were treated to an olive tasting amongst the olive trees (some trees were as old as 2000 years!).

Day three we embarked on a cruise ship at the port in Piraeus. On board we could relax, enjoy the scheduled activities, and hang out. During the 4-day cruise we visited 6 Greek islands, each with their own unique history and scenery. Mykonos was the first stop where we toured the windmills and ambled through the narrows streets between white houses (all with blue doors). The next day was an early rise (4:30am!) for a tour of Samos, the winery, the temple to Hera, and some shopping. Later that day we visited the island of Patmos, with its picturesque white houses. We explored the monastery and cave of St. John the Divine as well. Day 3 of the cruise brought us to the island of Rhodes. The weather was great and the sun was out, so after our tour of the acropolis of Lindos (where Mr. Smith rode a donkey!), many of us were off to the beach. Those who didn’t think it was quite warm enough for that, explored the ancient medieval city of Rhodes and shopped in the quaint shopping district. The fourth and final day of the cruise took us to the largest of the Greek islands, Crete, where many students had fish eat the dead skin from their feet. Later that day we visited the volcanic island of Santorini with its unique architecture and breathtaking views. There we beheld a beautiful sunset before boarding the cruise ship one final time.

The next day, we disembarked from the ship and explored the area of Piraeus, partaking in shopping, and coffee shops by the port. It was a beautiful day! It was early to bed that night as we prepared to begin the long journey home, with fond memories that will last a lifetime!

Mr. Jesperson is planning an Easter 2017 trip to Paris, Florence and Rome and during Easter 2018, Mr. Smith is in the very early stages of planning a trip to France, Germany and the Alps.

Sports NewsWVH sports is non-stop with so many teams and events going on it’s difficult to catch up!

Our Girls B Volleyball traveled to Clarenville on April 15th to for represent WVH at the 4A Provincials. They did an outstanding job and represented the school well.

Also did you know WVH is building a basketball empire! No only do they look swag but our Warriors can bounce a bit of ball and they have been busy filling the school up with banners!

Recently both our Girls AND our Boys teams won the NLBA Banners for NL East Coast Tournament for Grade 11s on the weekend of April 22 - 24th. Our girls team also competed in and won the first even Danny King Memorial Banner.

As well both of our boys and our girls basketball teams made the 4A Provincials. No one could touch the girls as they brought the banner home to hang proudly in our school As well our boys also did us proud as they traveled to Corner Brook in March and represented WVH for the first time in the 4A provincials.

This year WVH was offered spot in the Provincials for Floor Hockey but despite the hard work of Mr. Becker we were not able to get our team out to Stephenville in time.

Did you know that WVH is starting up an Ultimate Frisbee Team? This is a non-contact sport with (you guess it!) players throw and catch frisbees. If you are interested in playing please see Mr. Marmouche.

Another exciting sporting opportunity WVH was pleased to offer students was a ski trip to White Hills. Due to weather warnings it took us three tries to get the trip on the road but once they got out there all students and staff had fun enjoying the outdoors and a day of exercise.

Thanks to Jordan Chaulk for working so hard to do a fundraiser for recently deceased teacher Danny King.

Jordan did up posters and sold silicone bracelets to students and staff with all proceeds to go towards the SPCA and WVH Athletic program.

From Broken Eggs To Rollercoasters WVH shows Physics is Phun!Students have not only been learning about acceleration, centripedal force and the laws of elasticity but hey have been designing projects and putting some of the formulas they are learning to the test. Last fall students participated in the cardboard boat race and no this spring Ms. Anthony and Ms. Ash have students designing rollercoasters!

As well students actually built them out of everything from toilet paper rolls and duck tape to plastic tubing and popsicle sticks. And if that wasn’t enough fun a few weeks later they were put to the challenge of trying to protect an egg from a rather treacherous fall in our starwell. Given the weight of an egg and the height of the drop students had to use elastic bands to design a bungee jump with the winner being the group that got closest to the floor without breaking their egg! Good thing the put their eggs in ziplock baggies or it would have been a fine mess to clean away!

Big congrats to all those who participatred in the Eastern Newfoundland Science and Technology Fair 2016 on April 23rd. After some intense competition WVH brought home 8 medals and awards, which are listed below.

Bronze Medals: Taylor Van De Wiel, Mackenzie Woodfine, Mackenzie Collett

Silver Medals: Lindsay Dalton, Kurtis Collins & Kameron Collins

Special Awards: Conservation Corps Award – Mackenzie Woodfine, MUN Biochemistry Award - Kurtis Collins & Kameron Collins, NL College of Medical Laboratory Science Award - Kurtis Collins & Kameron Collins
