INSTALLING THE WEBEX SERVICE MANAGER SECTION 3: MANUAL INSTALLATION

INSTALLING THE WEBEX SERVICE MANAGER This section will provide detailed instructions on how to install the WebEx Service Manager. In addition it will include detailed instructions on how to use the WebEx MSI package in conjunction with the automatic installation process and it will provide some guidance as to what to expect when working with the MSI package and the automatic installation process. Instructions: (1) Local Machine Manual Installation (Single Machine) NOTE: MeetingCenter is used in the following example but these instructions apply to all Service Manager installations. Step 1: Gather system information

There are two system variables that must be considered when attempting to perform a manual installation using the WebEx MSI package. The first variable is the browser type that will be used to create/join the WebEx session. There are two MSI packages for each WebEx Service; one for Internet Explorer and one for Netscape Navigator. The second variable is the system privileges of the end-user who will be installing using the MSI package. The WebEx MSI packages require Administrator privileges to be installed.

Step 2: Acquire the WebEx MSI Package

The MSI package can be downloaded from the WebEx Service site. For example, “Company A” subscribes to the MeetingCenter service. A “Company A” end-user would like to download and install the WebEx Meeting Manager MSI package for the MeetingCenter service instead of using the automatic installation method. The end user would like to use Internet Explorer to create and join WebEx sessions. The end-user would download the MSI package for Internet Explorer using a web browser and typing this address in the location bar: http://companya.webex.com/client/latest/atmcie.msi

Step 3: Executing the MSI Package

The WebEx MSI Package is developed for the Windows Installer Service 2.0. In order to successfully install the WebEx Meeting Manager for Internet Explorer, the local machine must have this version of the Windows Installer Service. If the local machine is not configured with this version an error message will be displayed informing the end-user that the MSI package they are attempting to install requires a later version. Upon executing the MSI package the user will be prompted with a basic MSI interface.

Step 4: Working with the MSI User Interface (Installation)

The Windows Installer Service is an operating system service that is automatically run at system is startup. Executing an MSI package will automatically use this system service, which runs in the background. The first dialogue the user will see will be an informational interface that explains what is going to be installed (Figure 1.1).

The user will select “Next”. If the user selects “Cancel”, a prompt to confirm that selection will be displayed.

Customizing the installation means removing certain features from the WebEx Service Manager software. Customizing the installation of the WebEx Service Manager software must be done in conjunction with a few registry changes pertaining to the WebEx Service Manager to secure the installation customizations. These changes will help to manage the automatic update process when connecting to a WebEx session. Registry Installation Customizations The WebEx Service Manager MSI package will install the client components that are necessary to connect to a WebEx session. There are two important keys that must be edited to confirm any customizations to the installation of the WebEx Service Manager. Normally if any customizations are made to the installation of the WebEx Service Manager installation, the WebEx Service Manager will automatically attempt to update the existing installation to restore the components that may be missing from the installation. This is a function of the automatic software update process. Customizing these keys is important to change this automatic software update behavior. To customize the WebEx Service Manager installation, two registry keys can be changed. These changes can be made by editing the MSI package prior to executing the installation or by manually editing the registry after performing the installation using regedit.exe. To make changes to the MSI package prior to performing the installation, a software application capable of editing the MSI packages must be used. To manually edit the registry on the local machine, regedit.exe would be used. NOTE: Manually modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may damage the operating system. Please always backup the registry before making changes. The two keys that are used to customize the WebEx Service Manager installation are “autoupdate” and “alwaysconnect”. These keys are located in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WebEx\<Service Number> (Figure 2.1). NOTE: The <service number> is a variable used to identify the WebEx Service Manager that is installed on the local machine.

WEBEX SERVICE MANAGER CUSTOMIZATION SECTION 5: CUSTOMIZATION

AutoUpdate

The AutoUpdate key is a string value. The default setting is “1” or Enable; the alternative value is “0” or Disable. This value will enable or disable the WebEx Service Manager from receiving automatic updates. This value is important for system administrators that want to manage the WebEx Service Manager software manually instead of permitting the automatic update process to managing the software installation. This is especially important for normal user configurations on Windows NT/2000/XP. Some system administrators may select a Custom Setup of the Service Manger installation by choosing not to install certain features in the MSI installation. Disabling the AutoUpdate process would provide the system administrator the control necessary for managing the customized WebEx Service Manager software. For example, if the WebEx Meeting Manager for Internet Explorer is installed without the “Document Loader” feature on the local machine and the AutoUpdate value is set to disable (0), then any attempt to connect to the MeetingCenter Service site will result in no Service Manager updates to the local machine.

AlwaysConnect

The AlwaysConnect key is a string value. The default setting is “1” or Enable; the alternative value is “0” or Disable. This key is only used if the AutoUpdate key has been set to 0 or Disabled; if AutoUpdate key is set to enable then the AlwaysConnect value is not used. The AlwaysConnect value will enable or disable the WebEx Service Manager from connecting to any similar WebEx Service site where an automatic software update may be attempted. Because this key is only used when the AutoUpdate key is set to disabled (0), if the AlwaysConnect key is set to disable (0) any similar WebEx Service site that attempts a Service Manager update will automatically generate an informational message (ConnectMsg) and not connect the Service Manager to the WebEx session. If the AlwaysConnect key is set to enabled (1) and the AutoUpdate key is set to disabled (0), then the automatic software update will not occur and the Service Manager will attempt to connect to the WebEx session.

Successfully connecting to a WebEx session when the automatic update feature is disabled will depend on which components need updating by the automatic update process. With the AutoUpdate key set to disable (0) and the AlwaysConnect key set to enable (1), bug fixes and new features for the existing components on the local machine will not be updated for the Service Manager but connecting to the WebEx session will still be attempted. In some cases, the Service Manager may not be able to successfully connect to the WebEx session because the communication components that need updating are required for a successful connection to be established. Alternatively, the WebEx Service Manager can be configured to not connect to a WebEx session if a component needs to be updated, even if the component is not required to establish a successful connection. This feature is designed to provide an added level of control for system administrators to manage the WebEx Service Manager software. In this case, when the AlwaysConnect key is set to disable (0), the WebEx Service Manager will automatically display an informational message to the end user. This message is retrieved from the registry (Figure 2.2).

WEBEX SERVICE MANAGER CUSTOMIZATION SECTION 5: CUSTOMIZATION

ConnectMsg

The ConnectMsg key is a string value. The default setting is a generic message; an administrator can customize this message. The default message is: “You are unable to host or join this session. Please contact your system administrator.” When the AlwaysConnect value is set to disable (0), this ConnectMsg will be displayed when the local machine attempts to connect to a WebEx session that has any Service Manager updates. This message is designed to inform the end user that the local administrator has made an installation customization of Service Manager on the local machine.

In order for the auto installation process to detect that the WebEx Service Manager is already installed on the local machine, the following key is written to the registry (Figure 2.3).

Install The Install key is a string value. This key stores the WebEx Service Manager installation location on the local machine. If the installation directory of the Service Manager software is changed at the time of the installation, this key will automatically store the installation directory on the local machine. This key is important to the Java Installation Method for Internet Explorer. NsInstall The NsInstall key is a string value. This key stores information about the WebEx Service Manager installation for Netscape Navigator only. This key is created by the Service Manager Installation for Netscape Navigator and based on the Netscape Navigator configuration on the local machine.

Issue #2: When creating or joining a WebEx session after installing the WebEx Service Manager using the MSI package, an additional installation entry will be entered in the Add/Remove Programs menu (for Administrator users only). This entry will be listed as “WebEx”.

Resolution: Use the MSI installation entry for removing the WebEx Service Manager software. After removing the WebEx Service Manager software, select the “WebEx” entry from the list and it will automatically be removed. If the “WebEx” entry is used to remove the WebEx Service Manager software the MSI package installation will not function properly. This will be resolved in a future release.
