Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a condition occurring in patients with kidney disease. While the disease i s not common,it may have debilitating manifestationsfor affected patients, and several patients have died as a result of complicationsassociatedwith NSF and comorbid conditions. Cases of NSF have been associatedwith patients with severe renal diseasereceiving gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs)during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cases of NSF have beenidentified in patients receiving all FDA-approved formulations of GBCAs.The FDA now requires a boxed warning andadditional new warnings regarding NSF on forms of GBCAs. As more NSF cases related to GBCAs are continually beingreported, there is concern and confusion on the part of imaging physiciansas to which patientsare affected and whatmust be done to prevent NSF and managelreport it when it occurs. Educationon this issue i s necessary and crucial.

The goal of this educational activity is to provide continuing educationto healthcare professionals with up-to-date information on NSF.FDUCAJIONAL OBJECCNFSFollowing this presentation, participants should be able to:1. ldentify the signs and symptoms of NSF and the patient populations at risk2. Explain the relationship between GBCAs and the developmentof NSF3. Differentiate the theories of causation for NSF post-GBCA administration4. Describe potential algorithms for changing imaging practice routines to better identify

patients at risk for NSF and to potentially prevent NSF5. ldentify the availableservices for reporting possible cases of NSF postcontrast administration
