During his time at UWA, Martyn was active in local affairs and development. He was advisor to the WA Country Shire Councils Association and one of the initiators of the WA Local Government Association. He helped found the WA Conservation Council and for many years was a trustee of the Council. As a member of the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry he advised on planning and development of Perth as a state capital. Martyn’s work as a geographer was rewarded with honorary membership of the Royal Institute of Architects; the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science; the Australian Institute for Urban Studies and the Planning Institute of Australia. In 2008, UWA dedicated a lecture theatre in his name in honour of his contributions. Amongst other publications he wrote, with his wife, Audrey, Golden destiny: the centenary history of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and The Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia.
