Amongst other publications he wrote, with his wife, Audrey, Golden destiny: the centenary history of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and The Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia.

During his time at UWA, Martyn was active in local affairs and development. He was advisor to the WA Country Shire Councils Association and one of the initiators of the WA Local Government Association. As a member of the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry he advised on planning and development of Perth as a state capital.
