Universal Music is delighted to announce that on March 9th they will release a brand new compilation album Silver Linings that brings together songs chosen by Esther Ranzen and callers to the Silver Line, a free confidential helpline for older people living in the UK. An eclectic collection of classic songs such as ‘It’s Not Unusual’ by Tom Jones, ‘Over the Rainbow’ by Judy Garland, ‘Cry Me A River’ by Julie London and ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’ by Dusty Springfield.

Esther (who founded the children’s helpline ChildLine in 1986) wrote an article about the loneliness she has experienced since being bereaved, and living alone. She was overwhelmed by the huge response from older people who shared her experience and in November 2011 she was invited to make a key-note speech at a conference at which she came up with the idea of creating a helpline in order to support vulnerable older people, sign-post them to projects and services, break through the stigma of loneliness and isolation, and tackle the problems of abuse and neglect.

Esther Ranzen who was recently honoured with a dame hood, is best known on television for That's Life! which ran on BBC1 for 21 years becoming one of the most popular shows on British television. That’s Life was influential in many different ways and was responsible for the launch of Childline.

This affirmed her commitment to charity and put her firmly on the presenting map leading to a successful career in TV. Other series include Esther and Hearts of Gold.

“Our Silver Line callers are among the loneliest older people in Britain” said Esther. “55% of them tell us that they have nobody except The Silver Line to speak to. Most of our calls (we are open 24/7 every day and night of the year) come in the evenings and over the weekend, and some of our saddest come in during the small hours of the morning, when the pangs of loneliness are often the most painful. But they tell us that music means so much to them, restoring their memories of their you and that music brings back their happiest times. We asked our callers their favourite songs and singers and that is what we have collected on these CD’s which we believe will make the perfect present for anyone, parent, grandparent, godparent, aunt, neighbour, friend, who remembers classic songs they sang, danced to, and shared with their loved ones.”

The Silver Line have specially trained helpline staff who offer information, friendship and advice to older people across the UK. They help link callers to local groups and services and offer regular befriending calls to the elderly.
