NBC Learn in Canvas

Today we are going to learn how to search for videos in NBC Learn, how to use the various features of a NBC Learn video, and how to insert a NBC Learn video into a Canvas page.

Select a course in Canvas.

We can either browse NBC Learn from the course menu (you can play videos from this link, but you cant embed videos in Canvas from here),

or, you can locate NBC Learn inside the menu when you are editing a page. Click on Edit page and place your cursor where you want to embed a video.

Click on the letter V in the edit window to locate NBC Learn.

Select NBC Learn Video Library from the list.

From the NBC Learn home page we can either use the search window to locate a video, or we can browse through the videos by subject on the left side of the window.

For todays lesson, we are going to use the search window. Lets do a search for videos about the Vietnam War from 1957 through 1975. First, we enter a search for Vietnam War videos and the results we receive included videos from after 1975.

Then we can set a time frame to search for videos from 1957 through 1975.

After looking through the results of this search we decide to select an interview of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Meet the Press.

We click on the video and pause it to view the various components of an NBC Learn Cue Card. Besides playing the video we can adjust the size of the screen, adjust the volume of the video, locate other related videos and use Close Caption.

In addition, we can flip the card to view its characteristics, close the video if we decide not to use it, look at the transcript of the interview, embed the video, print the transcript, and/or download the video.

First, lets flip the Cue Card. We see there is general information about when this broadcast took place, a description of the content of the show, keywords to find related videos, and how to cite this video in MLA, APA and Chicago citation styles.

Lets flip the Cue Card back to the video and click on the Transcript tab. We can read the transcript and/or print this transcript.

Lastly, we can download this video to our computer, or we can embed the video into our Canvas lesson. Before we started searching for a video we set our cursor in our Canvas page for where we wanted to embed a video. Lets click on the Embed button to insert this video into our Canvas page.

The embedded video wont look normal until we save our edited page. So, lets click on Save to see what our video looks like in Canvas.

This video can be set to full screen in the classroom if you want a larger image on your computer screen.

For the rest of todays workshop please take some time to explore NBC Learn to see what types of videos you may wish to use in the classroom. If you find a video you can use for a lesson you are giving this year, then please take the time to embed this video into your lesson.
