NCEA Level 3 Subject Choice booklet

2016Please read through the following subject information for Level 3 as you make your decisions for study in 2016.

By completing your subject choice form this is an INDICATION of the subjects you would like to take not a guarantee that you will be able to take them. It will be dependent on the final timetable which will be confirmed at your appointment on Monday 7th December with your Dean. Subject numbers also determine if a subject is viable to run.

It is very important that you consider a number of factors when deciding what subjects you wish to take such as:

What are your areas of interest for when you leave school? Are the subjects appropriate for entry requirements for the course you wish to study when

you leave school? If you don’t know what you want to do when you leave school, have you chosen a broad

selection of subjects? Have you meet university requirements? (see below)

Talk with your parents, your ASTRA teacher and your Dean if you need help to decide and make the subject choices that are right for YOU!

To gain NCEA Level 3

All Year 13 students are expected to take six subjects. It is recommended that either English or Te Reo Māori should be included

Students need to gain a total of 80 credits. A minimum of 60 credits must be at level 3 and the other 20 credits at level 2 or above

To gain University Entrance (UE)

Achievement of NCEA Level 3 14 credits in each of three subjects from the list of approved subjects The remaining credits to achieve NCEA Level 3 may come from either achievement or unit

standards UE numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or higher from specified achievement standards or three

specific numeracy unit standards UE literacy – 10 credits (five in reading and five in writing) from:

Specific Level 2 and higher achievement standards, or Specific Te Reo Māori and Te Reo Rangatira Level 2 standards, or Two specific Level 4 English for academic purposes unit standards

EnglishEnglish in school increases students’ abilities to understand English language and to use it effectively. Confident users of English will be effective readers and communicators. Skill and knowledge development in English is focused initially on learning to read and write correctly and appropriately. This leads to thinking critically, processing information and exploring language through a wide range of relevant texts.

English Level 3 (13ENG)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This course may include extended writing, the study of moving text, literature studies, language or literature research, creating a visual essay and an oral presentation.

Course Prerequisite: Students should have gained at least 12 credits at Level 2 and passed at least 1 external achievement standard. Students must have gained the Level 2 credits required for university entry. I

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 24 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internal and externally assessed components.

Pathways: Tertiary study, all vocational pathways.

Employment Skills Level 3 (13EMP) This course is not suitable for endorsementCourse Description: This course offers students the opportunity to gain practical computing and

communication skills as well as learning about metacognition. It is designed to provide a variety of standards that can be added to the student’s CV to help when applying for employment.

Assessment: All work is internally assessed. The work is modular and students are encouraged to work independently.

Course Prerequisite: Students must contact Miss Conley or Mrs Ward to apply for this course. Students cannot be taking 13 DGT.

Pathways: Employment opportunities in a variety of fields.Possible Careers. Varied.

Costs: No related subject fees

Mathematics

It is important students retain their mathematical and problem solving skills as part of being lifelong learners. It will contribute to their social and employment environments. Opportunities are provided for students to improve numeracy skills by gaining credits at Level 3.

Mathematics with Calculus Level 3 (13MAC)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: The course involves the study of differentiation, integration, trigonometry and complex numbers.

Course Prerequisite: Students must have sat Standard 91261 Algebra and gained at least 10 credits at Mathematics Level 2 or at the discretion of the HOD.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 21 credits towards the NCEA Level 3. The course has both internally and externally assessed components.

Statistics and Modelling Level 3 (13MAS)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: The course covers time series and bivariate data investigations, linear programming, confidence intervals, probability concepts and distributions.

Course Prerequisite: Students must have gained at least 6 credits at Mathematics Level 2 or at the discretion of the HOD.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 23 credits towards the NCEA Level 3. The course has both internally and externally assessed components.

Science

Science is about investigating, understanding and explaining the natural world. In science subjects, students learn about the natural world and how science can help to explain how it works. The study of science will assist students to make informed decisions about the application and implications of science in everyday life.

Biology Level 3 (13BIO)This course is suitable for endorsement

Course Description: Students will study animal behaviour and plant responses: human biological and cultural evolution; contemporary biological issues; biotechnology; homeostasis.

Course Prerequisite: Students must have passed at least two externals in Level 2 Biology. or by negotiation with the Head of Department.

Course Description: Learn more about chemistry as it relates to everyday life. You will find out how things work, see the science, get ideas for experiments and catch the exciting career opportunities. The following topics are studied:Atomic structure, bonding and related properties; Inorganic chemistry; Energetics of chemical and physical processes;Equilibrium; Oxidation - reduction reactions; Organic chemistry; Spectroscopic analysis.

Physics Level 3 (13PHY)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: The course of study consists of four compulsory sections in mechanics, wave motion, electro magnetism, photons, atoms and nuclei and one practical investigation which individual students design and carry out themselves.

Assessment: The course has both internal and externally assessed components.Course Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Level 2 Physics and Transactional writing in NCEA

Level 2 English, or by negotiation with Head of DepartmentPathways: University or Polytechnic course in physics, engineering, medicine, optometry,

architecture and defence force careers. Primary, construction and infrastructure, manufacturing and technology and social and community vocational pathways.

Costs: $15 in term 3 for revision book. The class also go on an overnight trip to Rainbows End in Auckland to study the physics of the fun park. The cost of this is approximately $60 to $80.

Social SciencesSocial Sciences provide students with an understanding of the society they live in, its past, present and future. Students can study Accounting, Geography, History, Economics, Media Studies, Psychology and/or Tourism.

Accounting Level 3 (13ACC)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: Students study accounting skills in greater depth and employ techniques to process and analyse accounting systems of business entities, including partnerships.

Course Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 2 accounting.Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will

contribute up to 24 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internal and externally assessed components.

Course Description: Students will understand the world around them and how the allocation of resources has implications, both at micro and macro Level. Economic theory and analysis are studied. Opportunities will be provided for research and economic analysis of contemporary issues.

Geography Level 3 (13GEO)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: The course looks closely at geographic processes operating in a distinctive environment (Tongariro), a cultural process operating in a selected environment (ie. Tourism in NZ or the Gold Coast, Australia) and geographic skills.

Course Prerequisite: Success in geography at NCEA Level 2 is desirable but not essential.Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will

contribute up to 24 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internal (14) and externally assessed components (8 – 12).

Course Description: Study in social, economic, political trends in world history. 1950s and 1960s,

Conservative USA versus the progressive New left, The Cold war, capitalism and materials versus communism, the ‘counter culture’, rise of the student revolutionaries

Course Prerequisite: The course may be undertaken for the first time at Level 3 with a satisfactory

level attained at Level 2 English (including formal writing). Home internet access highly desirable.

Media Studies Level 3 (13MED)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This course further develops the study of media – particularly film. The conventions of different media, how they have changed over time and their impact on us as media consumers are covered in depth. Using this knowledge, students plan and produce their own documentary film or feature article.

Course Prerequisite: Students should have gained at least 12 credits at Level 2 English including one of the Level 2 writing standards –91101 and/or 91105, or NCEA Level 2 media studies. Students must have gained the eight Level 2 English credits required for university entry.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 24 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internal and externally assessed components.

Tourism Level 3 (13TOU)This course is not suitable for endorsement

This is not an approved subject for UE but credits can be counted for NCEA Level 3

Course Description: This course covers the material necessary for completion of the requirements of the National Certificate in Tourism (Introductory Skills) Level 2 for those who studied Level 2 Tourism. It covers in depth New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands as tourist destinations.

Course Prerequisite: Completion of Level 2 tourism or evidence of a satisfactory year’s work at Level 2.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 24 credits toward NCEA Level 3. The course is assessed internally only.

Pathways: Tertiary tourism studies at polytechnic or private training establishments. Service and social and community vocational pathways.

Health and Physical EducationStudents have the choice of undertaking one of two physical education courses in the senior school. Skills Active is a course for students who enjoy the hands on practical nature of participating in physical education. Level 3 Physical Education entails more theoritical components with the application of theory to practical tasks.

Please note: Students cannot take both courses unless there are special circumstances and subject to permission from the HOD.

Level 3 Physical Education (PED3)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This is an approved university subject. This course focuses on students applying the theoretical knowledge they have learned in previous levels into more practical contexts. For example; term one students will design their own performance improvement programme to a challenging multisport event. They will investigate current issues, trends, or sporting events and the impact it has on NZ society. For example; scandals in sport, money in sport, drugs in sport, violence in sport, gender inequalities in sport etc.

They will analyse a skill performed by self or others and help them improve by using their knowledge of biomechanics, anatomy and video analysis apps on our school iPads own devices.

There may also be an opportunity for students to complete a standard that focuses on contemporary leadership styles in the context of coaching a junior class or local primary school.

Students will also get a chance to enjoy recreational and fun practical sessions throughout the year.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 19 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course is internally assessed only. Scholarship PE will also be offered to students who endorse the course with excellence.

Course Prerequisite: Level 2 physical education or 12 credits in Level 2 English or science or by negotiation with the HOD (student who displays excellence work ethic).

Pathways: University or polytechnic courses e.g. Bachelor of Exercise Science, Exercise prescription, National Diploma in Sport and Leisure, National diploma in Recreation etc. Social and community, service and creative vocational pathways.

Possible careers: Exercise science, physiology, sports nutrition, recreational studies, educational pathways such as physical education and personal trainer,

Costs: There is no cost to this course.

It is highly recommended if students have a smartphone or apple device to download the apps – ‘map my run’ (free), ‘heart rate’ (free) and ‘ubersense’ (free) in order to provide video analysis of their performance.

Level 3 Skills Active (SKL3) This course is not suitable for subject endorsement but is suitable for level endorsement

This is not an approved subject for UE

Course Description Level 3 Skills Active is a mixture of practical and theory based standards. This course will continue to develop key skills and concepts learned in Level 2 Skills Active. Students will be assessed on their performance in an aquathon event at the beginning of the year. Students will also explore more in-depth specific muscle groups in relation to exercises. Students will spend the majority of this course in the fitness centre working on technique and understanding exercise/fitness equipment (resistance training).

Course Prerequisite: Level 2 Skills Active, Level 2 Physical Education or by negotiation with the HOD.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 20 credits towards NCEA Level 3. This course is internally assessed only.

Pathways: Tertiary studies in sport and recreation. Social and community, service and creative vocational pathways.

Possible Careers: Employment in health, fitness and nutrition industries.Costs/Equipment Decent sports shoes and sports attire to workout in. Sweat towel

TechnologyTechnology includes four subjects; Digital Technologies, Fashion and Design, Food and Hospitality and Design and Visual Communication. Students are encouraged to take no more then two technology subjects.

Digital Technologies Level 3 (13DGT) This course may be suitable for endorsementThis may be an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This programme focuses on equipping students with the complex computer skills necessary to research, plan and develop ICT products in response to selected issues within their local environment. This involves the application of technological knowledge, an understanding of computer software, publishing and product development.

Course Prerequisite: An interest in computer publishing and success in a Level 2 technology course.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 20 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course may have both internally and externally assessed components.

Pathways: Tertiary courses in computing, graphic design, publishing. Manufacturing and technology, social and community, service and creative vocational pathways.

Fashion And Design Level 3 (13FAD) This course is suitable for endorsementThis is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: Student assignments focus on designing and constructing innovative fashion garments and/or textile products for authentic clients. Students learn advanced skills in research, planning, design, fashion drawing pattern drafting and complex construction.

Course Prerequisite: Level 2 Fashion and Design or Art or Graphics, or in consultation with Mrs Evans.

Assessment: Successful completion of standards associated with this course will contribute up to 22 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internally and externally assessed components.

Pathways: Fashion and Design courses at tertiary Level. Manufacturing and technology and creative vocational pathways.

Costs: $15 consumables plus materials used in design choice.Possible Careers: Opportunities exist within the areas of fashion design, the textiles industry and

Design and Visual Communication Level 3 (13DVC) This course is suitable for endorsementThis is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This course will extend skills acquired at Level 2 in the development of more specialised graphics knowledge. Students will continue to utilise a range of graphic equipment and apply the use of colour and techniques along with computer graphics to enhance project work.

Course Prerequisite: A satisfactory year in Level 2 Graphics.Assessment: Successful completion of standards associated with this course will contribute up

to 24 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internally and externally assessed components.

Pathways: Tertiary study courses in graphic design, architecture and industrial design. Manufacturing and technology, service and creative vocational pathways.

Possible Careers. Opportunities exist within the areas of architecture, interior design, landscape design, product design, computer graphics and advertising.

Food And Hospitality Level 3 (13FAH)This course is NOT suitable for endorsement

This is NOT an approved subject for UE

Course Description: Students will study nutrition and food preparation. They will learn about hazards and how to control them in a catering environment. Students will learn about different culinary terms, methods and cooking styles. They will be encouraged to use their new skills during their practical sessions. The main project for the year will focus on preserving, chutneys and jams and creating a product for an end user. Throughout the course students will gain an understanding of nutrition, diet and menu planning in a commercial situation.

Course Prerequisite Food safety certificate 167. If a student does not have this certificate they will be expected to complete Food Safety 167 out of class and meet with the TIC. Cookery and an interest in the hospitality industry.

Assessment: Successful completion of standards associated with this course will contribute up to 20 unit standard credits at Level 3. The course is internally assessed with a high level of practical assessment.

Pathways: Tertiary studies. Social and community and service vocational pathways.

Costs: $105 subject fee to cover ingredients used.

Design Level 3 (13DGN) This course is suitable for endorsementThis is an approved subject for UE

Course Description This is essentially a student directed and teacher supervised course. Students will focus on visual communication for marketing or on illustration for those with strength in drawing, text and image combination and manipulation. Students will be required to use drawing as the primary means of expression to generate, develop and resolve design problems. The first half of the year provides foundation studies to enable students to become conversant with the process and techniques required to produce a successful submission for the external assessment.

Assessment: Successful completion of this course in the first half of the year will contribute up to 10 credits towards NCEA Level 3. If a student gains a Merit or better average, they will be encouraged to spend the second half of the year producing work for a three panel folder or attempt other standards which will enable them to gain 14 or 16 credits in the Arts domain for entry into University. Standards are internally and externally assessed.

Visual and Performing Arts

Arts Education can help to develop a sense of achievement and personal worth. It provides students with knowledge that the Arts meet their needs and enables them to participate effectively in the cultural and artistic life of their community

Dance Level 3 (13DAN)This course is suitable for endorsement

This is an approved subject for UECourse Description: This course is mainly practical and is very rewarding as it is designed to extend

student’s performance, choreographic and leadership skills, allowing them to produce a dance from a starting point and follow it through to the presentation on stage. The students are also given the opportunity to learn and perform a variety of highly skilled dances for assessment purposes. Students will take part in a dance showcase evening giving them numerous opportunities to perform. The course serves as preparation for those students who wish to take dance/performing arts further and requires a high level of self-motivation, leadership and application of skill.

Course Prerequisite: 12 credits or more in Level 2 Dance or HOD approvalAssessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute

18 to 26 credits towards NCEA Level 3. This course qualifies as a University Entrance subject. The course has both internal and externally assessed components.

Pathways: Tertiary Course. Creative vocational pathways.Possible careers: Teaching, fitness instructor, performing arts, dancer, entertainer, choreographer,

children’s entertainer, event manager, critic, reporterCosts: No related subject fees but it is expected that students will take part in the Dance

NZ Made workshops/competition = $30. There will also be an opportunity to see a professional dance company perform which is optional. Approximately $30

Drama Level 3 (13DRA) This course is suitable for endorsementThis is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: Drama is about performing and performance techniques. The course will deepen a student’s understanding of theatre performance. It is an extension of Level 2 Drama and includes a full scripted drama for performance. Devising drama, demonstrating knowledge of a drama/theatre for a period (through a practical presentation), and performing acting roles are all part of the course. Participation in cultural activities outside of the classroom would be of value. Student workbooks are essential to the completion of the course.

Course Prerequisite: 12 credits or more in Level 2 Drama or at the HOD’s discretionAssessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute

18 internal credits and up to 8 external credits. These are spread over six assessed components.

Pathways: Tertiary Performing Arts courses, Toi Whakaari, Weltec, Whiteria, University Arts courses. Service and creative vocational pathways.

Possible careers: Drama is about developing creative skills and communication. It is a creative activity and as such has value outside of identified careers. TV and radio broadcasting; acting in film or stage; youth or community worker: personnel manager, marketing manager, performing arts management, teacher, director, producer and drama coach or therapist; critic; playwright, writer; entertainer; reporter

Costs: $5 script printing. Students have to see a live theatre performance for the external examinations. There will be a cost depending upon the performance but can range in price from $5 to $40.

Painting Level 3 (13PTG) This course is suitable for endorsementThis is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This is essentially a student directed and teacher supervised course. In the first half of the year, this course aims to develop an awareness of alternative approaches to drawing and painting. The emphasis is on contemporary work and students are encouraged to visit public and dealer galleries.

Assessment: Successful completion of this course in the first half of the year will contribute up to 12 credits towards NCEA Level 3. If a student gains a Merit or better average, they will be encouraged to spend the second half of the year producing work for a three panel folder or attempt other standards which will enable them to gain 14 or 16 credits in the Arts domain for entry into University. Standards are internally and externally assessed.

Course Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Level 2 Art - PaintingPathways: University art school, polytechnic, teacher, artist, stage designer or other tertiary

courses, film school, design school. Creative vocational pathways.

Possible Careers: Teacher, painter, cartoonist, art teacher, artist, stage designer, architect, printmaker, illustrator, film studies, graphic artist, conservation of art

Photography Level 3 (13PHO) This course is suitable for endorsementThis is an approved subject for UE

Course Description: Level 3 NCEA Photography is a one year course where students will cover practical and technical skills in digital photography, to develop and extend ideas towards a folio. It is essentially a student directed and teacher supervised course. The first term contains practical assignments. During the second term students extend and refine their camera handling and picture making skills.

Assessment Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 24-30 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course has both internal and externally assessed components. If students gain a Merit or better average in assessments worth 8 credits in the first half of the year, they will be encouraged to complete a three panel folder to gain a further 14 credits towards NCEA Level 3 and entry into university. Scholarship can be attempted.

Course Prerequisite: 12 credits in Level 2 Art or HOD approval and a 6 megapixel plus digital camera – this is essential BEFORE the course commences.

Pathways: University, art school, polytechnic, other tertiary courses. Service and creative vocational pathways.

Course Description: Māori language at this level requires a great deal of commitment and effort. The rewards, however, are many as we investigate further the qualities of te reo, tikanga, mana, ihi, wehi, tapu, kia ora tatou.

Course Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of NCEA level 2 MāoriAssessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute

up to 24 credits towards the NCEA level 3. The course has both internal and externally assessed components.

Course Description: This course builds on the base created in the NCEA Level 2 French course and aims to develop students’ communication skills in written, aural and spoken French.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 20 credits towards NCEA Level 3. The course is internally and externally assessed. Written, comprehension, aural and oral skills are assessed.

Gateway Level 3 (13GAT) This course is not suitable for endorsementThis is not an approved subject for UE

Course Description: This course offers students the opportunity to experience work in real situations. The school component focuses on all aspects of employment. This will include Health and Safety, Legal requirements, Communication skills as well as giving the student the edge in the competitive employment environment. It also enables students to experience future career options (whenever practicable) in similar or related industries.At this Level, the programme builds on the Year 12 foundation and adds in more legal and life experience skills to provide the student with a well rounded employment education. This is a NCEA Level 3 based course.

Assessment: Successful completion of all standards associated with this course will contribute up to 20 credits towards NCEA Level Three. Gateway is internally assessed with one compulsory three day course. Additional credits towards NCEA Level 3 are available through some work placements.

Course Prerequisite: Students must contact Mrs Jacobs or Mrs Ward to apply for this course. Students must be committed to a one day work placement per week. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on work missed due to their placement. This programme is a Tertiary Education Commission initiative. It is a directed option due to limited placements available.

Pathways: Primary, social and community and service vocational pathways.Possible Careers. Wide and varied as this course offers experience in a variety of different

Childcare and Education Level 3 (13CED) This course is not suitable for endorsementCourse Description: This course offers students the opportunity to learn both theoretical and practical

skills when dealing with children. It is using the PORSE materials and works towards and additional qualification. This course would be suitable for any student who may be dealing with children in the future from being a nanny through to coaching teams for small children.

Assessment: All work is in modules and has written booklets that will be completed under the supervision of the teacher. It is all internally assessed. There are a maximum of 22 credits available at level three for this subject.

Course Prerequisite: Students must contact Mrs Ward to apply for this course. Student must also be taking Gateway as another subject and be looking at being placed in the social and community vocational pathways.

Pathways: Nanny Internship, National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 3).
