Objective(s): Students will apply the principles of design by designing their own t-shirt.

Primary Unit of Study (from Scope & Sequence): Manufacture First ProductSecondary Unit of Study (if applicable):

College & Career Readiness Standards:

Software: Any graphic design software

Materials Required: T-shirt, Transfer Paper, T-shirt press machine (can be purchased from Pitsco), Ink Jet Printer

Prerequisite Skills: None

Time Required: 5 class periods (45 minutes each)

Essential Questions: What design elements would an engineer need to consider in specific fields? How does the creative process relate to engineering?

Key Vocabulary: Emphasis, Rhythm, Unity, Variety, Proportion, Balance, Line, Color, Texture, Value, Shape

Procedure/Instruction:

This lesson is adapted from the UNT lessons Principles of Design and Elements of Art (both are attached).

1. Introduction : Show the presentations provided by UNT “Principles of Design” and “Elements of Art” and have students take notes. Teacher notes are in the lesson plan files also attached.

2. Exploration : Students will search for examples of each principle and element and present these to the class. Encourage students to look for items related to engineering (for example, bridges for civil engineering, instruments for music engineering, sports equipment for sports engineering).

Depending on time and class structure, this can be accomplished individually, with partners or teams. Presentations can be done informally, by simply showing the pictures to the rest of class or creating a more formal presentation using a presentation program such as PowerPoint or Animoto. The teacher can check for understanding while the students present their pictures. A rubric could be used for a more formal presentation.

3. Application : Students will design a t-shirt that is completely original. Any graphic design program can be used such as Publisher or Word. You may encourage the use of a program the students have not yet had exposure to

during the year. Once the design is created, an ink jet printer will be used to print the design on transfer paper. Make sure the mirror image option is chosen under printer properties. Print each student’s image on the transfer paper. Use the heat press to transfer the paper onto the t-shirt. Students will need to bring their own t-shirts or these can be purchased using available funds.

The t-shirt should be graded for creativity, originality, and meeting deadlines.

Closure: Students will write a reflection paper (or blog) describing the principles and elements of design used in their t-shirt design. A thumbnail image should be included on their reflection paper. The reflection should be graded for accuracy, organization of thought, and grammar.

Evaluation/Assessment: Other than the grading structures already discussed, UNT has provided quizzes that can be used in their attached lesson plans.

Differentiation Strategies: These have been discussed in the procedure.
