The children began their class time silently reading from a book of their choice. All students who read received participation points for their efforts.

The children used their notes to begin organizing their reflective writing piece that will explain to next year’s students how to survive my literature and grammar/composition class. This advice will be written in the form of an advice column for a newspaper. The students used Google Docs to write their piece. They were given a request for advice that they needed to copy and put into their document first. I have included it below. Absent students will receive a bigger copy in their packet.

The children need to transfer their introduction paragraph onto lined paper, remembering to insert transition words to insure that their ideas flow smoothly. The children need to write on both sides of the lined paper and write on every other line, so that we can edit their work easier. They need to remember to indent each paragraph, as well.

We defined dependent and independent clauses. The children were also taught that a subordinate conjunction has two jobs. First, provides a necessary transition between the two ideas in the sentence. This transition will indicate a time, place, or cause and effect relationship. The children and I broke down several elements of the plot for this week’s story and we started discussing the elements. Elements that were discussed are as follows: exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

The children began their day reading a book of their choice and points were given for participation. The children took their Week 1 Vocabulary Quiz today. We started reading over and discussing the story entitled “The Three-Century Woman” by Richard Peck. HOMEWORK: The children were given Scholastic book orders and my classroom code which is

L7GDY. Book orders are due on Friday, September 12, 2014. The site to order books from Scholastic is www.scholastic.com/readingclub


The students completed the Week 1 Day 5 Bell Word and they were given point for this in class assignment. I totaled the number of points that they earned this week and it will be entered into Skyward.

I gave the children a paper with song lyrics on it to the song “Parts of Speech.” We filled it out together and I had the student color the parts of speech that corresponded to the ones on page 1. The children were to glue the song on page 2 and write, “p. 2 – Parts of Speech song on The Table of Contents page.

HOMEWORK: The students are to complete the “Dead Verb” and “Dead Word” pages. Students will need to write words on the mummies that they utilize too much and put synonyms for that word on the back. It would be helpful if they could have a ziplock bag to put their pieces in so that they do not misplace them.

We discussing page 8 Model Selection Fiction. We worked a page together entitled “Reading Warm-up A p. 15. It contains the vocabulary the children

will encounter over the story “The Three-Century Woman.” We read over a page entitled “Exploring Fiction” together and I told the students to put it in their take

home binders. HOMEWORK: I assigned p. 14 of the Unit 1 Resources entitled Vocabulary Warm-up Exercise p.

We put the bell work in binders and I explained how to complete bell work according to my expectations. The students completed the Week 1 Day 4 Bell Word and they were given point for this in class assignment.

We discussing fiction and nonfiction over pages 6-7. We focused on the elements and types of fiction and nonfiction.

We worked a page together on how to tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction. HOMEWORK: I assigned p. 9 of the All-in-One Workbook entitled Learning About Fiction and

Nonfiction and p. 10 of the Reading Kit entitled Literary Analysis: Fiction and Nonfiction. We focused on how to distinguish between first and third person point of view. HOMEWORK: I assigned p. 9 of the Reading Kit entitled Literary Analysis: Point of View.



I gave the children a copy of the definitions and examples for the parts of speech cutouts. HOMEWORK: The students are to put the definition and examples on the parts of speech cutout

and glue them onto page 1 of their “Grammar Notebook.” NOTE: This is NOT the Table of Contents page.

We finished discussing comprehension skills in the comprehension handbook found in the textbook pages P4-P11. We discussed the following comprehension skills:

We read and discussed text pages 2-5 together as a class. We went over all of the vocabulary words on p. 3 and discussed each words meaning. The children then completed a Smart Response on the Big Question Vocabulary p. 1&2 NO HOMEWORK



I explained how to color and cut out the cutouts for the Parts of Speech page. HOMEWORK: The students are to cut out the two parts of speech pages this evening.

I administered a diagnostic test for the first unit today. We discussed comprehension and started going over the comprehension handbook found in the textbook

pages P-P3. We discussed author’s purpose, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and context clues. We worked a page together on context clues and the students found out how easy it was to use the

context to figure out a word that was missing. The children then completed a Smart Response on context clues NO HOMEWORK



We started organizing our composition notebooks. HOMEWORK: The students are to color in the two parts of speech pages this evening.

I collected any new supplies like binders and composition books. Students put their names on the edge of the binder and on the composition books in permanent marker.

The students were give their Pearson Passwords and they were to take them home and give them to their parents. Today we listened to Weird Al Yankovic on YouTube – Word Crimes at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gv0H-vPoDc It is a great video about grammar and how to use it properly.

We put the bell work in binders and I explained how to complete it along with my expectations for bell work.

I told the students how to begin the bell work as soon as they enter my classroom. On Monday, I will teach them the format in which they will write their daily bell work.

The children learned how to utilize the Smartboard to do their attendance. Students learned that each day they will sit down and begin to work on their Bell Work quietly after

attendance. Mrs. Hemberger and Mrs. Rudin introduced themselves. We collected Kleenex boxes. Each student was given a classroom syllabus and we went over it on the Smartboard. Students were given a pass handout and explain how to utilize the passes handout. We went over the late work policy and I explain how to turn in late work. The children and I went over the

forms that need to be filled out when they have late work. I passed out a supply list and ask student to have binders here by tomorrow if possible. If students bought

composition books for Mr. Marsagaila they can use them in my room. Students learned where to turn in work and find absent work.

Students learned that they must have a library book with them every day and they will receive a score each day for their participation in reading. This will be extremely helpful since this year they will be required to get 20 AR points a quarter.
