Abstract
Background:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) can be detected early using spirometry, but its use is only recommended in symptomatic smokers, although early stages of COPD may be asymptomatic. We investigated the prognosis of asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals with undiagnosed COPD in the general population.
Methods:Among 95 288 individuals aged 20-100years from the Copenhagen General Population Study, 32 518 were assigned being at risk for COPD, defined as, age 40years, cumulative tobacco consumption 10 pack-years, and no asthma. COPD was defined as a forced expiratory volume in 1 second(FEV1)/forced vital capacity(FVC)
