BOOSTING OUR FUNDS – SOME GREAT NEWS Joye and Derek have been busy keeping North Division NHW solvent! We are delighted to say that we have once again been successful with a bid to the National Lottery. They have given us a grant of £7181 to purchase a brand new colour photocopier which is to be delivered next week. The award will also pay for Antiscam wallets, lamp

post signs, and message in a wallet. The Co-op Community Award Scheme has granted us £1450 to purchase window stickers and personal security devises. We are extremely grateful for these two awards which enable us to continue and extend our work without having to charge membership fees.

NEW SENIOR POLICE COLLEAGUES As you know we really value our partnership working with the police. They regard us as equal partners and demonstrate this with financial and practical support and advice. We have grown accustomed to this great working relationship and we are re-assured that two new senior officers are continuing with this tradition.

The new North Divisional Commander is Chief Superintendent Rachel Osborne. She and Joye have struck up a great working relationship. Commander Osborne is quoted as saying: ‘I am keen to ensure that the service we deliver is of the highest standard possible. Whilst this division has not escaped the public service cuts, I will do everything I possibly can to ensure that public receive the service they need. We welcome Commander Osborne and hope she has long and happy association with NHW.

Kam Bria is our new Chief Inspector. Kam started as a beat bobby in some challenging areas of Nottingham and transferred to Derbyshire in 2001. He was promoted to Inspector in 2008 and was previously Section Inspector in Derby East. We welcome his backing and will do all we can to see that NHW supports him in his new role.

WE NEED YOU TO SHOW UP...... We here at Chesterfield have been lucky enough to be invited to “show our wares” at the following county and agricultural shows in August and September.

1. Bakewell Show 1/2/3/ August2. Ashover Show 9 August3. Ashbourne Show 19 August4. Hope Valley 28 August5. Chatsworth Show 1/2/3 September  This is a great opportunity for us to raise the profile of NHW. Thousands of visitors attend these events not only from Derbyshire but from across the whole country. We are looking to produce a generic leaflet to introduce NHW to people attending the shows. Obviously, if they are from Derbyshire (particularly North Derbyshire) we’ll grab the opportunity to recruit them as potential Watch leaders or members of existing Watches. We’ll have a laptop (subject to internet access) so we can do a postcode search for the visitor’s home address and give information as appropriate.

We need to set up a rota of volunteers to staff our stand acrosss all times and all events. We’ll produce a briefing sheet but it’s really quite straight forward. Please let us know if you can help on any of the days at any of the shows.Once we hear from you we can let you have further details of times we are operating. This is a great chance for lots of our committee members, Co-ordinators, and members to show their commitment to the NHW movement by helping to extending its great work to new streets and communities across the UK.

FIRST THERE WAS MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE... soon there will be ‘message in a wallet.’ Similar vital personal emergency details will be recorded on a card designed to be carried in a wallet or purse. We’ll let you know as soon as they are available so you can begin to spread the word.

ANSWERS TO THE CHRISTMAS QUIZOnly four people entered the quiz. Was that because people don’t enjoy a quiz, found it too easy, found it too difficult? These reasons wouldn’t matter too much. CALLING ALL MOTORCYCLISTS - CRASH-CARD IS HERECrash-Card is a programme in which motorcyclists place a card inside their helmets as a medical alert. The details which the rider has written on the card provide vital information for attending emergency services if the motorcyclist is injured in a road traffic collision. Saving valuable time and helping treatment especially if the rider is either unconscious or unable to communicate.

Crash-Card was created by the committee of the Ambulance Motorcycle Club, a group of experienced Paramedics and ambulance staff who are passionate about motorcycling.

We here at Chesterfield & District Neighbourhood Watch are promoting these cards as Derbyshire is a well-known mecca for motorcyclists. The cards will carry the logos of Chesterfield & District Neighbourhood Watch and Derbyshire Police, who as always are willing to show their support. Our picture shows (l-r) Project & Development Officer, Joye Dobbs, PC James Pendrill and Sgt Steve Simmons

Should any of our members know of someone who would appreciate one of these cards, which are free, please contact Joye on 0300 122 8526 or [email protected]

101 RESPONSE TIMES

Many of you have complained about the fact that the 101 system has been slow, so slow that this has deterred you from phoning in to report incidents; your phone calls may even have been cut off as you were waiting so long.

The 101 system has had some major changes made to it:

1. All operators have 48 weeks training, but now inexperienced operators are being put on duty with those who are experienced to reduce problems.

2. Shift patterns have changed so that there is better cover over 24 hours.3. More options are available to direct you as soon as possible to the correct person.

Gill Riley the NHWN Communications Administrator for Derbyshire has reported that she has found the 101 response times now much better, and so far in February have not had to wait more than five minutes, so you should be assured that you will now receive a quicker response. Please resume using 101 for non-urgent calls whenever you need to.

Subject: Using Mobile Phone Whilst Driving Campaign From March 1

We have a question for you - how would you spend £200?Would you freshen up your wardrobe, buy a stack of the latest games, head down to London to see a show, or maybe pamper yourself with a spa day?Or how about having to shell out £200 in one hit because you were using your mobile phone while driving? From March 1, 2017, any driver caught using their phone will be fined £200 and have their licence endorsed with SIX penalty points. That could be enough to get you banned! It doesn't matter what you're using your phone for - texting, calling, posting on Facebook, tweeting, snapping, streaming, selecting a music track... if the phone is being held in your hand, any use while your engine is on is against the law. Many people have asked whether the use of their phone as a sat nav is acceptable. It is, but only when it's in a hands free cradle and it must not interfere with your vision. And if you have to make or accept a call, make sure it's hands free. And don't ever Facetime or film yourself whilst driving, even if the phone is in its cradle. That's just ridiculous.Distracted driving is a major contributor to road collisions. Is it worth losing your life, or killing someone, just for the sake of using your phone? No. It can wait.

Subject: One victim reports dating fraud every three hours according to the latest national figures

Every day, seven reports of dating fraud are received by Action Fraud – on average one every three hours – an increase of 32% over a two year period (from January 2013-December 2015) according to new national figures released by City of London Police.

In less than one month - 30 days - of contact, the average victim of dating fraud will make their first transfer of money to the fraudster, demonstrating how quickly and easily these situations can escalate, and will lose £10,000. On average it takes only nine more days before a report is made to Action Fraud about the fraudulent activity.

Between 2015 and 2016 nearly £40 million was lost through dating fraud with 3,889 reports made in total. However, evidence suggests that this doesn’t accurately represent the true scale of dating fraud due to the embarrassment felt by some victims of fraud which can discourage them from coming forward to report their experience. Almost half (45%) of victims who reported to Action Fraud said that the crime had a ‘significant’ impact on their health or financial wellbeing.

We are teaming up with Get Safe Online, Victim Support (VS), Age UK, City of London Police, London Metropolitan Police (FALCON) and the Online Dating Association to help online dating site and app users to stay safe.

The top five #datesafe tips include:

Get to know the person, not the profile and ask plenty of questions - don’t rush into an online relationship.

Check the person is genuine by putting their name, profile pictures or any repeatedly used phrases and the term ‘dating scam’ into your search engine.

Talk to your friends and family about your dating choices. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them.

Never send money to someone you’ve met online, no matter what reason they give or how long you've been speaking to them.

Don’t move the conversation off the dating site messenger until you’re confident the person is who they say they are.

Tony Neate, CEO of Get Safe Online, said: "While we regularly hear good news stories about couples meeting online or via dating apps, these findings show there is an increasing problem with the number of cyber criminals out there who are looking to target vulnerable people for significant financial gain. It’s not just the financial loss though; dating fraud can have a huge emotional impact on a victim too. We’ve spoken to people who’ve lost everything – their savings, their homes – and in many cases, it’s the whole family who suffers because of it.

“Anyone who has fallen in love knows how easy it is to get swept up in the romance of it all and let their heart rule their head, so we’re urging people to take a little caution when meeting someone new online. The best thing you can do to avoid being taken in by the wrong person is tell a close friend or family member before you get too involved so that they can support you and offer advice if you’re having doubts.

Page 7: Web viewsoon there will be ‘message in a wallet.’ ... available so you can begin to spread the word. ... in one hit because you were using your mobile phone

“We also encourage people to check our ‘date-safe tips’ before meeting a potential partner and take the time to find out if their match is genuine or not. If you’re meeting up with a date you’ve met online, always tell someone else where you are going. And don’t forget, it's very unlikely that anyone with good intentions would ask for money and if it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't."

If you, or anyone you know, have been affected by this fraud or any other scam, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk  For more advice around fraud, visit the dedicated Stamp out Fraud webpage atwww.derbyshire.police.uk/stampoutfraud

RFID CARD MINDERS

You will all have read on page one that Chesterfield & District NHW have raised the funds to purchase some RFID Card Minder Wallets. These are on order and hopefully they will be in this office by the end of March.

Should you like to receive one please contact Joye on the office number or e-mail and one will be sent to you. The initial one will be free and you do not have to be a Watch member to receive one, however should you require more than one per household it would be appreciated if a donation could be made to our funds so that we may continue providing cyber safety measures.

We shall also be handing these out at all the publicity events that we will be attending throughout the summer, so look for our stalls across North Derbyshire, where you will be made more than welcome.

It is a pleasure to be able to put a face to a name and with 819 Watches now in existence we hope that you will make yourself know.

AND FINALLY please don’t forget we’d like some feedback from our Watches. We’d like to include YOUR news in Sentinel. Whilst we NEVER tell people how to run their Watch, we are always here to help if we can – so let us know.Let us have your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, comments and gripes or grimaces. Can we help you to extend your Watch to take in another street? Do you have contact with a church, club, school, organisation that would welcome an illustrated talk about NHW? If so, please let us know. Neighbourhood Watch is proven to be worthwhile so surely it is worth extending it to cover new ground. If all our Co-ordinators found one more willing person we could double our coverage in Chesterfield & District. Wouldn’t that be great?!
