From the PastorDecember 6, 2015

2nd Sunday of Advent - CThis Tuesday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was conceived in the womb of her mother, Saint Ann, with the unique grace of being unstained by Original Sin, as was Eve. Nine months

from now we’ll celebrate Mary’s Nativity or Birthday on September 8. It is also our Nation’s Patronal Feast Day; see the Mass Intention section for this holy day of obligation’s Mass schedule, and wear blue that day for Mary! The ‘basic’ Marian Preface below, which is not used on the Immaculate Conception, is based on her canticle, the Magnificat, which she sang upon greeting her kinswoman Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist. John leapt for joy in his mother’s womb when Mary, with the newly conceived Christ in her womb, drew near. Here’s the Song of Mary in Luke 1:46-55: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the

Lord;my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his lowly servant.

From this dayall generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm,and has scattered the proud in their

conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their

thronesand has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant

Israel

for he remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,to Abraham and his children for ever.”

This canticle or biblical hymn echoes the words sung by Hannah, a long-barren Old Testament woman who eventually conceived the great Prophet Samuel. [See 1 Samuel 2:1-10.] Mary’s Canticle is sung or said daily by all who pray Evening Prayer [Vespers] in the Liturgy of the Hours; for the Magnificat is always its Gospel. It is the inspiration for the following Preface which is only used on ‘minor’ Marian feast days.

Preface II of the Blessed Virgin MaryThe Church praises God with the words of MaryIt is truly right and just, our duty

and our salvation, to praise your mighty deeds in the exaltation of all the Saints,

and especially, as we celebrate thememory of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

to proclaim your kindness as we echo her thankful hymn of praise.

For truly even to earth’s ends you have done great things and extended your

abundant mercy from age to age:when you looked on the lowliness

of your handmaid, you gave us through her

the author of our salvation, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Through him the host of Angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your

presence for ever.May our voices, we pray, join with

theirs in one chorus of exultant praise, as we

acclaim:

We Must Echo Mary’s Faith, Hope and Trust. As they say, ‘the apple does not fall far from the tree’ - so, are we more like our first mother, Eve, whose disobedience brought sin and death into the world - or more like our Blessed Mother, whose obedience brought Christ and life into the world? Since our every word or deed echoes one of our ‘mothers,’ we must constantly ask ourselves not only ‘what would Jesus do’ … but is it what Eve - or Mary - would say or do? Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. This Canticle, and all of salvation history, is one unbelievable record of God’s abundant mercy. The human race deserved - and still deserves - to be cast

Page 4: easeton.neteaseton.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/C-December-6 …  · Web viewSince our every word or deed ... Michael Cadwallader, Collin Smith, Daniel Bindas, Kristen ... Every

into oblivion, if not Hell itself! Yet God has, does, and always will: bless and forgive, sustain and support, gift and grace us with His mercy - even when we deserve His wrath. We call Mary ‘Mother of Mercy’ for she is our ‘tainted human race’s solitary boast.’ This title for her comes from the words sung about an Old Testament woman, Judith, who saved Israel from total annihilation by her courageous deeds; of Judith they sang: “You are the glory of Jerusalem! You are the great pride of Israel! You are the great boast of our nation.” [Judith 15:9] How much more awesome is our Blessed Mother!

In His holy Name,

Saint Nicholas DayAccording to tradition the candy cane's red and white stripes remind us of our Christian calling: white reminds us of our Baptismal call to become another Christ; red reminds us that we must be willing - as was Saint Nicholas - to

endure ridicule and even persecution in living out our Christian faith.

Blessing of Candy CanesGood Saint Nicholas, we honor you on this your holy feast day. We rejoice that you are the patron saint and the holy symbol of joy for many peoples in many lands. Come, great-hearted saint, and be our patron and companion as we, once again, prepare our homes and hearts for the great feast of Christmas, the birth of the Eternal Blessing, Jesus Christ.May these sweets, these candy canes, be a sign of Advent joy for us. May these candy canes, shaped just like your Bishop's staff, be for us a sign of your benevolent care. We rejoice that you are the holy bringer of gifts and that so many have been delighted through your generosity. Help us to be as generous of heart.Wherever these candy canes are hung, on tree or wall or door, may they carry with them the bright blessing of God. May all who shall taste them experience the joy of God upon their tongues and in their hearts. We ask God, now, to bless these brightly striped sweets in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
