Warm-up:

As students settle in the classroom the teacher starts talking to them about conventions and what they involve. She asks them if they know or have been to any conventions in their city. She asks them what it is about and what is the point to these conventions. What type of crows attends these organizations and such other questions. She then talks about what is needed to be done to organize such events and asks the students opinions. She then shows a short video of a very famous convention ‘comi con’ to the class.

While – Activity:

After talking about the conventions, the teacher divides the students into 4 groups of 6 people and gives them each the task of researching on how to plan a conventions. The teacher gives six tasks on which the groups will research on, the place, gaming companies, food and beverage, seminars, activities and putting up a stand. The search will involve specifically gaming conventions. In short, the teacher asks them to research what involves a gaming convention.

Post – Activity:

While they research these details of a convention organization, the students will take detailed notes and they will tell the class what really goes into planning and event such as this one. They will also consult with each other on the placement of activities in the convention. For example; where should the catering booth be and where should they set up the tabletop game activities. During this search they will have gone on several blogs and online communities to ask in more detail how these conventions should be organized.

Homework:

After all this research the teacher will ask the students to organize their own convention on the concept they decide on, for example; cos play, movie conventions, anime conventions etc. They will have

to decide on the place, the food, transportation, activities and other details that is involved in planning and organizing a convention.

Justification:

The point of this exercise is to enable students to do detailed searches online and be able to get information internationally talking and communicating with foreigners. They will have to have a good handle on English in order to establish useful contact with foreign people. They will also have to analyze which information is useful and which ones are not. While they are searching they will also improve their organizational skills. All that research will give the students a clear idea on how to plan events. This topic is also something that is recognized internationally and has a lot of fans therefore it is not a boring subjects for students to work on. It is also an authentic subjects on which the students might get motivated and excited to work on. If ever they have been to a convention like this in their hometown they can also compare and contrast between the differences of culture in their own country with other overseas countries.
