Nunavut Arctic College is committed to providing high-quality educational opportunities for all

adult learners in Nunavut. Our courses and programs are geared to meet the growing need of

the people of Nunavut for relevant and accessible education and training, which will prepare

them for a variety of employment opportunities. The College Mission Statements reflects this

commitment:

“Nunavut Arctic College strengthens the people and communities of

Nunavut by advancing the lifelong learning of Northern adults through

high quality career programs appropriately delivered with our partners

throughout the Arctic, and by making the benefits of traditional and

southern science more available.”

The Graduate Survey is an important tool that assists Nunavut Arctic College to develop plans

for program delivery and improved services. We believe in the value of feedback as a tool for

continuous improvement. The results of this survey act as an indicator of successful

programming, but also give us a better understanding of student characteristics. This

understanding is necessary in order to identify and provide services that are fundamental to

student success. It’s important for NAC that people have an enjoyable and exciting learning

experience while going to Nunavut Arctic College.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

Methodology

222 students graduated in the spring or summer of 2014. These graduates were contacted

through several methods of communication: phone calls, email, and mail. Survey monkey was a

new way to get graduates to complete the survey, but it wasn’t properly set up so it wasn’t so

effective. 102 graduates responded to the Graduate Survey.

Procedure

Data was collected at the Nunavut Arctic College in the summer of 2015. The questions used in

this survey were similar to those used in the previous graduate surveys; some changes may

have been made. The continuity of the questionnaire design allowed comparison of the results

with the past years. The contact information of the graduate population and contact

information were obtained from the College’s Student Records System, which provides a listing

of those students who have successfully completed the requirements for graduation. Their

names were verified with program coordinators. The result of the completed surveys increased

by 17% from the previous academic year.

Q8C: If you were not satisfied with the program, please tell why:

1. I was not satisfied with how slow the internet was; sometimes the instructor’s computer equipment would take a long time to start up or just shut down completely. It took valuable learning time away from students.

2. Outdated computers; classmates/team projects; money, income from support from FANS too little: out of town students incomes were much greater than ours (locals).

3. Sharing computer time; need library; and sometimes loud neighbors.4. Too far away from Baffin; can’t take laptop home to do homework; and when

graduating, you can’t get family members to attend graduation.5. Weren’t prepared for the course (NAC).6. Have textbooks available before the courses start.7. Slow internet; and lack of good materials to work with (not like college).8. Computer resources; internet connection; and Inuktitut courses.9. One instructor was unwelcoming.10. Learned some students did not have time to do assignments; elder invitation to some

modules would have incorporated; and Inuit social values, even if it is for a conference call to include the values.

11. We didn’t have a proper instructor throughout the semester.12. Student got criminal record and noticed a NAC employee with record who is working.13. Other students picked on me.14. Short course! I was hoping it would be more than nine months.

Nunavut Arctic College 152014 Graduate Survey

15. Hardly any support from the college.16. Lack of instructor.17. Computers and printer need upgrades.

Q9: What improvements would you suggest from an academic perspective?

1. Practice more on my Inuktitut speaking and writing.2. Some classes (English and Math) could’ve been at a higher level.3. More homework; faster internet (someday I hope), and practice more on organizational

speed internet; and more strict instructors.12. Lend laptops, even if there’s computers for homework; better chairs for full time

students; more pay on elders, and equipment to record.13. Always room for improvements; get three trades within the year.14. Would be nice if Office Admin had a 2nd year for students who finished the 1st year.15. Do one course at a time, instead of having many different courses in a day.16. More northern content.17. More energetic teaching.18. Better (faster) internet.19. Some courses were too short; need more time with work.20. Offer programs that give degrees, not only diplomas (example: SSW).21. I think everything is great.22. Standard Inuktitut checklist for marks.23. Extending the length of program (ET), and access to more courses.24. My opinion is there shouldn’t be any changes.25. Nunavut Arctic College 162014 Graduate Survey

Page 17: Web viewProgram Completed by all 2014 Graduates Column1 ABE Essential Skills Accounting Technology Apprenticeship Electrician Level 1 Apprenticeship Electrician Level 2

30. Time limits, different courses: changed classes every 40 minutes and I didn’t like that.31. Offer a second year for Office Administration; and have more funding.32. To have more courses to choose from.33. It was hard to get seal skins in the winter.34. There needs to be more assistance in different subjects.35. Homework assignment place in the evenings.36. It is important for students to get the most of their college experience so they should

always have an instructor available for the courses. There were times I did not have an instructor so I felt lost out on certain skills that were needed for my career. I was not impressed with that.

37. Inuktitut instructor had a different dialect, it made it hard; and get Inuktitut instructor that speaks in the same dialect as the students.

38. Inuktitut typing need to be improved.39. No discrimination (at time I felt headquarters [Iqaluit] were not too supportive with

community NTEP).40. Start looking at applicants instead of looking at their academics.41. For the college to treat people equally.42. Better and more computers with Wi-Fi.43. Don’t recommend online courses, slow internet connection.44. Do more work; and have shop classes.45. Get support worker other than instructor; provide books in all the courses before the

program to reduce delays/complications; and library needs to be updated.46. Not enough visual aid; books came in late, get books before course starts.47. Problems with instructor, not present at all times.48. More equipment for science classes.

Q10: What improvements would you suggest from a student services perspective?

Classmates don’t know Inuktitut.8. Not many places to go during practicum; fit in the school during practicum.9. Replace Old Res.

Nunavut Arctic College 172014 Graduate Survey

Page 18: Web viewProgram Completed by all 2014 Graduates Column1 ABE Essential Skills Accounting Technology Apprenticeship Electrician Level 1 Apprenticeship Electrician Level 2

10. More recreation at Kivalliq Campus.11. More recreation.12. NAC staff should have more involvement with students and do presentations.13. New computers; more things to do for visiting students; access to community gym;

discounts; sports; and registry.14. More recreation for students at campus; counselor shouldn’t take bank cards, and she

should stay away from problems.15. For out of town students, have evening activities.16. Have a space allowed for students with kids to go study/homework.17. Better housing for students; and more money for food, etc.18. If travelling outside of home, housing rennet should be lowered especially when income

is low; provide food programs for students as well; and babysitter/daycare availability.19. Housing for students in the same community.20. With student services, all three would be nice to be more improved. Housing is quite

hard to get when people like to go for Kivalliq Campus for college, most applicants tend to wait a year. Counseling would be nice if the counselor would be more open for one-on-one time.

21. There should be telephone for students to use for family to call or emergency. Have one of the students to have telephone for other students to use.

22. More activities.23. More involvement with elders and youth in the community.24. More activities.25. Counseling.26. Housing.27. More recreation.28. More recreation.29. More recreation; and better housing.30. Better counseling.31. Better housing: had heating problem.32. More activities for students and their families to offer.33. Not enough housing; better recreation.34. Everything is great, people just need to ask for help or ask more questions.35. Have kitchen appliances in old Q-units. Reason for that is that my first year, I had to

bring my own kitchen appliances like cups, plates, bowls, spoons, etc.36. Divide couples/singles students to each unit and having a very open minded manager

for students housing.37. Try and get housing.38. Too strict (at the trades school), I felt like a prisoner.

Nunavut Arctic College 182014 Graduate Survey

Page 19: Web viewProgram Completed by all 2014 Graduates Column1 ABE Essential Skills Accounting Technology Apprenticeship Electrician Level 1 Apprenticeship Electrician Level 2

39. Housing, Old Res; and maybe better support from student services and residents manager.

40. More activities for students.41. Student funding is too little; and lower rent for student housing.42. Counseling and recreation need to be improved.43. Better housing.44. Transportation not provided to local residents to presidents or other facilities.45. Get housing.46. Get rid of the Ukkivik residents. No one wants to stay there at all and when I did stay

there, everyone complained about the food. It’s old, it’s ugly, everything is broken in the gym, and it’s not a friendly, inviting environment no matter how brightly you paint the walls. The beds are the most uncomfortable!

47. More counseling and recreation.48. Counseling wasn’t offered; no housing, they should get these services for the smaller

communities.49. Get student housing.50. The housing provided was not the best, the housing was very old and nothing but

furniture was provided. I had to spend a lot of money buying basic things like plates, bowls, cutlery, while the new units had everything provided including televisions and dishes.

51. The size of NAC needs to get more space, has only two classrooms (Clyde River).52. Better housing; and more recreation.53. Get all services in smaller communities.54. Counseling (family and individual); housing; and financial aid counseling.55. Connect with all students.56. Some students need counseling.57. Have more compassion.58. More support in having a daycare.59. Housing.60. More support other than instructors; and support programs in the community.61. Need more student housing.62. Get counseling; and better recreation.63. Better housing for students with children.64. Better housing.

Additional Comments:

1. It’s a lot easier to understand the instructor if it is an Inuk, as they can explain from English to Inuktitut.

2. Need more hands on experience; provide the program every few years (NTEP) in different communities; and it is good to have in home community.

3. Management Studies has next to no advertising; not advertised on magazines, websites, locally; Management Students is a very good course and I recommend more advertising.

4. Courses are good; and NAC buys too much books and they get wasted.5. Encourage more students to take college after high school; and advertise college

programs.6. Couple summer students are going to take the program and I gave them advice,

encouraged them to go to NAC.7. Great experience.8. I think it’s great for upgrading people want more they can know where they are at with

education if they want other courses to happen.9. My first year of college, I recommended a friend to take ETP and he applied and got

accepted.10. Possibly if the student is living in a housing unit, have that rent payment taken out

automatically from the funding the student is receiving. 11. Try your best.12. To have more courses on program (PASS).13. Thank you NAC that I learned a lot.14. Thank you for the opportunity to further my education.

15. I recommend do/do not recommend the nursing program. The nursing program staff at NAC were always very supportive but I did not appreciate when we did not have an instructor for a course. There was no reason why we shouldn’t have had an instructor and I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else. If I wanted to take distance education then I would have signed up for that. I encourage program managers and HR to keep up with the demands of the programs as much as possible, because in the end, the students are the ones that are at a loss, no matter how small or big, it shouldn’t have happened.

16. Would like to see better funding while taking courses & get daycare plus more subsidies.17. For out of town students, why is it so hard to get help from family? To get family to

follow while going for college.18. Happy NAC promotes education.19. In Igloolik, there are a lot of young parents with minimum wage, I always suggest Arctic

College to friends and family. Most people I suggest to apply. I tell them it’s a great experience and it’s not that hard.

20. We didn’t like having to wait for an instructor to come in to the community. Wi-Fi internet access was also a problem since we had to wait for different hour to use the computers in order to proceed our work because not all the information we get use from the books and most of information we get are from worldwide web.

21. I wanted to get my diploma from last year (still never received it).22. Recommend Inuit to take NTEP to get more Inuit teachers; finish high school first; and

all communities in Baffin should have NTEP to have more Inuit teachers.23. Gets better to deliver programs in smaller (home) communities; deliver courses in the

communities which will have high interest rates with lower dropout rates; and have more screening in selecting students.

24. Get bigger college and more courses; and instructors that are based in the community.25. ABE instructors need to be more helpful and be more understanding.

Conclusion and Recommendations:

Performance and Impacts of NAC Programs

Nunavut Arctic College 282014 Graduate Survey

Page 29: Web viewProgram Completed by all 2014 Graduates Column1 ABE Essential Skills Accounting Technology Apprenticeship Electrician Level 1 Apprenticeship Electrician Level 2

The survey highlights that NAC has been successful in producing satisfied graduates as well as providing them with employable skills. The college also appears to have improved in providing courses and programs in communities which do not have a campus. Given that 69% of respondents have children and 66% are married or in a common-law relationship, their ability to go away for post-secondary education is limited. The better NAC is able to meet people’s education needs in their home communities, the more Nunavut residents will be able to develop their skills and learn new ones. This would also mean a reduction in travel expenses, and leave more money available for programs. It may be a better use of government money to upgrade CLC facilities and expand programs than to pay for the travel and accommodation of students at larger campuses.

This survey only looked at the overall satisfaction levels. The college could also benefit from identifying an analysis of individual program effectiveness.

Level of Education for Graduates

9% of the graduates received diplomas, 40% of the graduates completed record of achievement programs, and 41% completed certificate programs. 10% of the graduates surveyed received degrees. These findings need to be considered in the light of emerging demands for skills and education in Nunavut territory. The existing needs for teachers and healthcare professionals with degree level education are obvious. The policy level implication would be how to attract more young people to degree programs.

Furthering Education

16% of the graduates’ surveyed pursued further education. This raises an interesting question. Is it because the opportunities for employment are very limited, or the graduates did not consider that as an option? In Nunavut which is in many ways a developing economy, the goal of post-secondary education should be two fold.

Collecting of information

Once students’ names, programs, phone numbers and addresses were verified, the 2014 graduate surveyor separated the students into regions: Baffin, Kivalliq and Kitikmeot. An advertisement for the survey was posted in northern papers, NAC website, and on NAC Facebook and Twitter accounts. Graduate name’s that completed the survey was entered for a NAC jackets and other promotional items. The students were called between 8:30 – 5:00. Most of the graduates completed the survey were contacted; sometimes it took at least five tries to get a hold of them. Some students were contacted by Facebook. Some suggestions on how to reach students would be by email. The only problem was that emails were not provided with the students’ information, so they were looked up on the Government of Nunavut’s mailing list for those who were employed with the GN. But served as a problem for those who are not employed with the Government of Nunavut, for there was no way of obtaining an email. If

Nunavut Arctic College 292014 Graduate Survey

Page 30: Web viewProgram Completed by all 2014 Graduates Column1 ABE Essential Skills Accounting Technology Apprenticeship Electrician Level 1 Apprenticeship Electrician Level 2

emails were provided with the phone numbers as well as mailing address information, surveys might be completed sooner and a higher number of graduates would complete the survey. Survey monkey could be successful in receiving a high rate of competed surveys, if graduates’ emails are listed.

Another suggestion might be for students to complete a survey right after the program has finished. With doing the survey right after their program has finished the information and opinions would still be fresh in their minds and might produce a 100% participation in the survey rather than 46% a year later. These are all things to consider getting more accurate and precise results to then better improve on for the satisfaction of future NAC students. That way, the survey would be available at the college, perhaps on their last day of class.

Students during the summer

Though there are some students who have to work during the summer, this summer found a number of students out or not home during the time the Graduate Surveyor called. Suspecting that because people like to be out during the summer they were not home. However, the surveyor contacted a higher percentage than the previous year. With 222 students graduating from a NAC program.
