PHOTOGRAPHY BINDER COLLAGE – TOOLS: Magazines, scissors, markers, paints (at home if you choose) rubber cement, index card stock (the inside surface of a cereal box will suffice if you did not get card stock in class for some reason. TASK: Create a collage on a piece of card stock. This design should work well together. This will serve as your photo binder cover. Its purpose is to tell me about you, your interests, your favorites, whatever makes you happy, or whatever symbolizes what you are all about. You may consider it a self-portrait. MUST HAVES: A focal point. We call this EMPHASIS in photography, a dominating part of the composition you tend to notice first, typically larger in nature, but some artists use small images for emphasis as well. HINT: Do NOT center this focal point. That’s bad practice. BALANCE the piece with adequate imagery choices. Achieve visual equilibrium. Make sure the viewers’ eye will want to flow freely throughout the cover and edge. In photo we call this MOVEMENT. Your name MUST be CLEARLY but CREATIVELY depicted somewhere in the main composition A clear photograph of yourself (you pick the size) must be incorporated in the main composition The space does not have to be filled in its entirety. Learn to recognize and honor NEGATIVE space! Place your images carefully and creatively with symbolic imagery. Think about placement on the page to MAXIMIZE your visual communication, that is… be choosy about where you want to feature things in the artwork you are creating. WRITING PROMPT: Place this on the BACK of your collage: Think about the latin roots of the word PHOTOGRAPHY: GRAPHOS = “writing with.” PHOTOS = “Light” Write about the act of framing and recording aspects of your world using light as the medium and a camera as a tool. BINDER COLLAGE –

TOOLS: Magazines, scissors, markers, paints (at home if you choose) rubber cement, index card stock (the inside surface of a cereal box will suffice if you did not get card stock in class for some reason.

TASK: Create a collage on a piece of card stock. This design should work well together. This will serve as your photo binder cover. Its purpose is to tell me about you, your interests, your favorites, whatever makes you happy, or whatever symbolizes what you are all about. You may consider it a self-portrait.

MUST HAVES:

A focal point.

Your name MUST be CLEARLY but CREATIVELY depicted somewhere in the main composition

A clear photograph of yourself (you pick the size) must be incorporated in the main composition

The space does not have to be filled in its entirety. Learn to recognize and honor NEGATIVE space! Place your images carefully and creatively with symbolic imagery.

Think about placement on the page to MAXIMIZE your visual communication, that is… be choosy about where you want to feature things in the artwork you are creating.

WRITING PROMPT: Place this on the BACK of your collage:

Think about the latin roots of the word PHOTOGRAPHY:GRAPHOS = “writing with.”

PHOTOS = “Light” Write about the act of framing and recording aspects of your world using light as the medium and a camera

as a tool. Assuming that the act of image making is a form of communication, what do you want to communicate to the world? Write down your thoughts with 2 paragraphs (around 10 sentences) on the
