MEDIA INFORMATION FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 31, 2011 Career Center student wants to be the next Steve Jobs Napoleon junior plans to get eight computer certifications, college credit before he graduates from high school JACKSON, Mich. – “I want to be Steve Jobs,” said Napoleon High School junior Brandon Smith. “This is just one of the eight computer certifications I plan to obtain before I graduate!” Smith enrolled in Jackson Area Career Center’s Computer Systems Technology class after visiting the class in his sophomore year. On Jan. 14, he received word that he passed the CompTIA A+ Practical Application Exam to secure his A+ certification. What does all this mean? To Smith, it means he has a credential that could lead to a job as soon as he leaves high school with an average salary of $40,000 or advanced placement in college with free college credit. “Brandon is an atypical student with excellent talent,” said William Farrant, Career Center Computer Systems Technology instructor. “He completed the curriculum to prepare for this exam in four-and-a-half months when it is usually delivered in nine months.” Smith’s plan is to continue his education at Neumont University in Utah, which focuses on computer science education majors that are deep in technological industry practices and creativity. Students who enroll at Jackson Area Career Center have the opportunity to earn industry credentials and get the edge on their competition in most programs.
