Offense: Transition Basketball: EVERY possession.

Philosophy…

Basketball is a game of transitions – win the transitions, win the game. Attack after gaining possession – puts pressure on the defense to get back Aggressive offense leads to aggressive defense – mindset. “Easy baskets” - against a defense that is not set. Mode of thinking – attacking basketball, put the other team in foul trouble. Conditioning & Expectation to run – play more players Easy transition into set offense (less set offense to run) Help your own transition defense Helps beat a press after a make Emphasizes fundamentals – passing, catching, footwork…REBOUNDING Team play and spacing Fun for players – once they buy in…

Things to consider…

Accept turnovers & errors of effort Must teach catching and moving to meet the pass Must rebound: teach technique & mentality Takes some time to establish the mindset in your team & establish roles – getting the ball to

the right people. Reaction must be automatic. Determining when the pass ahead is not there Need players that want to run – especially post players. Need to be deep team or in

excellent condition. “First three steps” Players need to run & dribble w/ head up.

1.) Primary Break Rules- vs. 2 or fewer defenders- get ball to the middle & fill lanes- ball handler must drive until defense stops ball- shot in two or fewer passes - foul line/elbow jump shot*

Drills & Instruction:

3 man weave – one way for conditioning and down & back w/ rebound & outlet

Full court partner lay ups – outlet passes & cut behind – pitch ahead; variations

Z passing – full court in three passes, basket to basket

3 on 2; 2on 1

3 v 3 full court

2.) Secondary Break: Carolina- vs. 3 or more defenders- after a make or a miss- pass ahead to wings or sprinting 4, if you can’t pass ahead – dribble toward the

middle, but establish a strong side.- numbered break: 1 , 2 & 3; 4 & 5- Emphasizes ball reversal & basic offensive principals: - A.)change sides of the court, - B.) three passes unless a lay-up- C.) inside/outside attack

1 – PG; takes outlet on the move; head up – picks a side – establishes strong side for the 4. Looks to pitch ahead to the wing up the sideline (transition defense is getting back to the middle). Follows the pass and is available for ball reversal.

2 & 3 wings – get out and fill lanes, be available and ready, back to the sideline, meet the ball - catch & rip…

- Look low to the 4- Look to penetrate/shoot- Reverse to the 1 who followed- Weak side wing has run to the baseline, then leaks back out on the same side to

natural wing position awaiting ball reversal or back door cut.

4* sprints to the low block strong side – should be your best low post scorer or decoy to occupy space – works hard to get the ball, follows ball reversal staying strong side.

5 – trailer – rebounder/inbounder – responsible for spacing and ball reversal. slowest player, good shooter – will have open shots from top of the key, may help with ball handling

- Reverse the ball through the trailer, 4 follows the ball…- Lots of variations at this point…Flow into offense…what do you run? - 4 & 5 exchange – into 1-3-1 offense

1.) Taught through “dummy offense” down & back, “Whole part” method2.) 5 v 33.) 5 v 5 & emphasized every transition

“The fast break is a way of life; it’s a philosophy. Always say to yourself somebody may be loafing…don’t hold the ball – look down the court.” Red Aurebach – The Celtic Fastbreak
