The Meaning of the Advent Wreath

Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent.  Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.

The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

It is hard to believe we are entering the first week of Advent. Advent is a time for us to prepare for Christmas. So, I encourage you with all the Christmas decoration to remember the reason for the season is Jesus Christ.

A big congratulation to our deacon Joe and Elyna O’Niel who received the Cherverus award this Sunday. We thank them for all the work that they do for our parish. May God continue to bless them for many years.

Now it is time for my macaroni and meatballs!

Fr. George

OFFERTORYThe Offertory collection for

week ending November 26, 2017 ($3,994.00) The Second Collection for was ($2,035.00) In order for St. Anthony to reach the budget we need ($5,000.00) a week. Thank you for all of your generous support throughout the year.

Advent Wreath Lighting PrayersThe Tradition of the Advent

wreath helps us pray together in preparation for Christmas. Each of the four candles represents one of the weeks of Advent. The candles of the wreath light the way to Christmas. As the light from more candles grows brighter, Christmas draws nearer.

First Sunday in Advent

Advent

We step into the season of advent from this Sunday. First Sunday of the Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year. The word ‘Advent’ is derived from the Latin word adventus which means “coming.”

The season of the advent went through a lot changes throughout the history. By the 6th century Roman Christians had tied Advent to the coming of Christ. But the “coming” they had in mind was not Christ’s first coming, His incarnation on this earth but His final and second coming. It was not until the middle ages that the season of Advent was explicitly linked to Christ’s first coming at Christmas. In the earlier times, like Lent, Advent is preparatory season. Today penitential theme exists but not in the earlier times. At present, the season of advent lasts for four Sundays. It begins on the nearest Sunday to November 30 which is the feast day of St. Andrew, the apostle and it ends on the eve of Christmas.

Though the season of Advent went through a lot of changes, it is a season of looking forward and waiting for something greater, both for the annual celebration of the event of Christ’s birth and for the time when Christ will come again. But the festive mood of Christmas washes away the element of our Lord’s final and second coming from the scene.

However, to balance the two elements of remembrance and anticipation, the Holy church mindfully invites us to reflect over both themes in four Sundays of Advent: the first two Sundays in Advent look forward to Christ’s final and second coming and the last two Sundays look back to remember Christ’s incarnation on the earth. Thus, we are asked to prepare ourselves worthily for the celebration of the anniversary of our Lord’s birth and to face the final and second coming of our Lord as the judge.

The season of Advent is a period of time

The season of Advent is a period of time

Prayer: Loving God, I thank you for giving me the season of Advent as a wonderful opportunity to renew myself to celebrate your son’s first coming and to face your Son’s second coming worthily. I feel sorry for my failures in the past. Give your showers of blessings on everybody in the world to enjoy peace both in mind and heart. I ask this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Calling All Angels"

The children of the parish are invited to participate in this year's Christmas Pageant. The pageant will be presented at the Christmas Eve Mass on Sunday, December 24th at 4:00. What a beautiful way for the children to learn about that first Christmas! We need to fill many roles for the pageant including the star, angels, shepherds, townspeople, kings and of course Mary and Joseph! We have many of the costumes already or you can be creative and design one of your own! There will be two rehearsals. One will be on Saturday, December 16th at 2:00 and the second on Friday, December 22 at 4:00, both in the main church! Parents, you are welcome to participate too! Send Mrs. Felzani an email at [email protected] or call the rectory and leave your name and number! "O Come all Ye Faithful!"

Thank you, Donna Felzani

Confirmation News

“There comes a time for us not to just be survivors, but to be warriors. You have your life, and the chance to make the most of it. Don't run or hide from that challenge or let your guilt keep you from living your life. This gift is such a beautiful opportunity. Embrace it. Seize every opportunity from here on out. Live.” ― Becca Vry

Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Can you believe it? How quick the days have gone? It seems like yesterday that we had our New Year celebration for 2017. There is an old saying, “Time and tide waits for none”. We need to remember this as Christians and go for making use of the time offered to us every day and be faithful witness to the love of God. God’s design for us is not to be mere survivors but to be warriors in living the faith and be the powerful witness to God’s love. Living the genuine sincere and selfless love taught by Jesus is really a challenge in this modern world, which promotes the ulterior ends and vested interests. Seizing every opportunity and living the faith and bearing witness to the love of God is the way to be alive before God. As we are entering into the season of Advent which calls us to get prepared for receiving the Lord when He comes in glory again, let us take a resolve to face the challenges of faith and be not survivors of faith but warriors of faith and receive Him in the right way.

December 3, 2017 is the first Sunday of Advent. This Sunday after the 12 Noon Mass the first year Confirmation Candidates will have a session on “Places in the Catholic Church” and Who is who in the Church” from 1:15 PM to 2.15 PM at the faith formation building. The second year Confirmation Candidates will have their session on “The Challenges in living the faith” at the faith formation building in the evening from 6.30 PM to 8.00 PM.

All the Candidates of the Confirmation Program are to attend the 12 Noon Mass and do the sign-up sheets kept in the vestibule.

After the 12 Noon Mass, all the confirmation candidates are requested to remain in the church for few minutes to help Dana to bring the empty boxes from the basement of the Church to the vestibule, which will be used to fill the canned food that people bring for the Revere Food Pantry.

If you have any questions or concerns please call me on 781-244-9162 or email me at [email protected].
