Language Arts

The students are so excited to be reading mythology! We are split

into two groups; one reading Pandora Gets Jealous and the other reading The Lightning

Thief. As always, we will focus on using evidence to support

comprehension and inferences, learning new vocabulary, and

working on word skills, such as prepositional phrases and figurative language, and

continue working on our writing skills.

MATHIn math we just finished a chapter covering perimeter and area. Students built on the skills they had the opportunity to learn last year with more complex and challenging problems. This week we started our chapter on measurement. We will cover customary units first, then move to the metric system. Students were asked to memorize the basic measurement facts in both systems. The chapter includes working with time, and understanding the structure of line plots.

Camp Firebird is a fun place to be in the spring. We look forward to the chicks hatching, as well as our upcoming philanthropic event that

combines Relay for Life and our Field Day. The easiest way to help is to send in a donation for your child’s class basket. Basket themes are

listed below:Mrs. Whidden – Movie Basket Mrs. Rhodes – Frozen

Our next round of PARCC testing will begin the last week of April.

discovered how to build open and closed circuits with batteries, wires, a switch and a light bulb. This week

they will test materials to see if they are conductors or insulators. Students will finish the unit using “Snap Circuits” to build series and parallel circuits that use motors,

speakers and other devices.Social Studies

The students have been interested in recent topics because we are talking about history

that is recent enough that the kids have heard of them and even have family that

went through them. Some of our topics have included WWI, The Great Depression, WWII,

The Vietnam War, and the civil rights movement. Even when talking about

national topics like these, we always relate them back to Ohio and how they affected the economy, industry, and people in our great

state.

April Edition

Chickens: Students will become the proud parents of baby chickens sometime

around the 29th of April.  Chicken eggs were set into the incubator in Mrs. Whidden’s room on April 8th. After

candling the eggs this Thursday, 10 are believed to be healthy and growing.

There are a variety of types so we should have an interesting little family. Some

eggs have been adopted and named by students, but all will be a joy to behold

when they arrive!

We are looking for volunteers to help us out on our annual Relay for Life/Field Day, which will be on May 15th this year. We need volunteers to help run the fun-filled stations. If you are able to donate any time that day, please let us

know!

Also, if you have a canopy tent that the class can use that day for a shady resting spot, let us know!
