Genuine Faith—Lesson 4 James 1:19–27Application Exercise

Some Bible for Breakfast

“Did you have devotions this morning?” Linda asked her teenage son. “Yeah,” he mumbled.

“What did you read?” she asked. “The chapter from Proverbs for today. You know, the eighth chapter, for today being the eighth,” he responded with a little more energy.

Linda pursued the conversation, such as it was: “What did you learn?” Her son paused for a moment, “Uh, . . . Uh, . . . I dunno.”

1. Evaluate the son’s apparent definition of devotions. How was he right? How did his definition fall short?

2. If you were Linda or her husband, how would you follow up with your son?

3. What does James 1:22 have to do with our “devotions,” or Bible study, or “personal time with the Lord”?

4. What are your devotions like? Are you understanding, applying, and practicing God’s Word, or are you deceiving yourself that because you read it, you’re okay?

5. What can you do to improve your devotions?
