The Fat Ass Cancer Bitch Turns 49 Opens July 5 at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Christine Ernst presents her one-woman show, The Fat Ass Cancer Bitch Turns 49,in the Art Studio at Cotuit Center for the Arts July 31 to August 29. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM. There is no performance on August 7.

Edgy, unapologetic, funny, wickedly honest, hell-bent, and loudmouth, Ernst is a writer, poet, and performer. In her new show, Ernst continues her autobiographical musings with a new collection of monologues, blending storytelling, spoken word, poetry, and commentary on daily life that everyone can relate to. Her stories are about aging, marriage, parenthood, cancer, and trying to be a productive human in the world, trying to be an effective agitator, trying to make a difference, and, at the same time, getting the laundry done, Ernst said.

I want to do good work in the world, but I have to put gas in my car, I have to cook supper for my family, Ernst said. Were exhorted to do good work, but often find our days filled with the minutia of our lives. Its the dilemma most people face, and achieving a balance is a constant challenge for me. That's what I write aboutI need to make sense of it all."

Ernst believes that it is important for us to share our stories. So many people dont value their own narrative, said Ernst. It is crucial to tell you story and to receive other peoples stories, she said, because it allows us to find context and community in a confusing world. Stories connect us and will ultimately heal us.

I write because all I know to do is to share the storyas performance poetry, as performance stories, said Ernst. The rest of my life, Im thinking, the kitchen police are going to arrest me for doing my dishes wrong; the parenting police are going to take me straight to jail. But maybe not the poetry police because I think I am doing that pretty well!

Ernsts play about her battle with breast cancer, Reconstruction or How I Learned to Pay Attention, has been performed throughout New England. This is her fifth annual performance of FACB stories at Cotuit Center for the Arts.

Ernst got her nickname, the Fat Ass Cancer Bitch, when a neighbor hurled the insult at her, angry that Ernst returned a pile of dog excrement that the neighbors dog had deposited on her lawn. Amused by the epithet, Ernst adopted the name as her own.

Wine will be available for purchase, and Ernst will share cookies with the audience.

FACB Turns 49 runs about an hour and 15 minutes. Tickets are $15, $12 for members. Early reservations are recommended and may be made by visiting artsonthecape.org or calling 508-428-0669.
