WELCOMEThe Chair will welcome all members and invitees to the meeting and provide a brief verbal update.

APOLOGIESThe Chair will record any apologies. Members are reminded that apologies should be forwarded to the Executive Officer prior to the meeting. Members representing the faculties are reminded that if unable to attend a meeting, an alternative attendee from the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee or by nomination of the Dean should be organised prior to the meeting.

Members are also reminded that the meetings are usually scheduled for two hours ( 10-12pm), i f members are unable to attend for the whole meeting would they please advise the Executive Officer prior as this may have an impact on the Group proceeding inquorate.

2. EDUCATION FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP AND SEED FUNDING PROGRAM - REF: F73394

The Education Futures Scholarship and Seed Funding Program offers support to UWA staff in further developing innovative learning, teaching or assessment projects at UWA. The selection process is managed by the Education Futures Funding Selection Group, reporting to the Education Futures Strategy Group (EFSG).

A report prepared by Mr Mark Paynter, Centre for Education Futures (CEF) detailing the progress of the 24 scholarships awarded in 2015 is provided, (ATTACHMENT A) including links to project blogs which members are encouraged to disseminate to colleagues. The report also provides an update on the 2016 application process; a pplications are currently open and will close on 15th July 2016.

3. TRANSFORMING TEACHING FOR LEARNING – REF: F76456

Transforming Teaching for Learning (TTL) is a new entirely digital program delivered through the Blackboard LMS which has replaced the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching unit previously offered at UWA. TTL supports the Education Futures principles and focusses on highly accessible and acceptable learning and professional development for new and experienced staff at UWA involved in teaching.

The first series of modules in the TTL unit delivered by the CEF has concluded, to date 24 participants have met the assessment requirements to achieve a completion certificate in Module 1 or 2. Feedback from participants has been incorporated into revisions of the modules. Module 1 of the next series will commence on 11th July.

Attached (ATTACHMENT B) is a report on the delivery of the TTL program prepared by Mr Mark Paynter, CEF.

4. 7th WAVE CONFERENCES- REF: F80414

The CEF will host the first conference in the 7th Wave Conference Series on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th July. The 7th Wave reflects the ever changing landscape in Higher Education; the two-day event will explore opportunities to build on the momentum of existing innovative practises, inspiring innovation in learning, teaching and technologies in the process.

Members are invited to register for attendance and to encourage colleagues to participate. Further information regarding the conference, prepared by Ms Tracy Frayne, CEF is attached (ATTACHMENT C).

5. UWA MOOCs – REF: F50224

Two new UWA MOOCS have been launched on the Coursera platform: Psychology at Work and Agriculture, Economics and Nature with a further two new MOOCs currently in planning and production. Further information regarding content and enrolment numbers is provided for member’s information (ATTACHMENT D) detailed in a report prepared by Nathalie Ambrosio, CEF.

6. CARPE DIEM WORKSHOP SURVEY REPORT – JANUARY –APRIL 2016 REF: F76456

Carpe Diem workshops offer a fast, effective and highly practical design process providing an opportunity to rethink a unit, experiment with new ideas as well as combining forms of face-to-face and digital learning. Attached is a report prepared by Ms Laura Gray, Centre for Education Future evaluating attendee’s feedback for the period January – April 2016. (ATTACHMENT E ).

7. LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS REF: F76456

Learning Environments have been prioritised as one of the three key result areas for the Centre for Education Futures during 2016.

Attached (ATTACHMENT F) is an update on current projects from Mr Andrew Hu, CEF.

7.1 FUTURES OBSERVATORY – REF: F73393

The Futures Observatory showcases innovative, emerging and disruptive technologies through regular events and provides increased opportunities for UWA staff to explore consumer technologies and consider their role in teaching and learning as well as to engage in ‘future thinking’ across their educational provision.

Members are encouraged to disseminate the attached (ATTACHMENT G) report prepared by Ms Alyce Walpole, CEF outlining the Observatory’s recent activities and upcoming events to colleagues, to promote attendance and provide suggestions for future events.

PART 3 – ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISION

8. ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK FUTURES FOR UWA – REF: F74833, F76456

In December 2015, the Academic Council approved by R123/15 a new University-wide assessment policy to be phased in during 2016 and 2017.  UWA’s new Assessment and Feedback standards were launched by the Vice-Chancellor at the Assessment and Feedback Futures Conference held on 17 March 2016.

UWA’s objective is to adopt, in line with the new University Policy, a clear and consistent approach to Assessment Standards that must be fair, integral, valid and efficient. Efficient assessment encompasses the use of digital tools where appropriate, measures student learning and provides effective feedback to students with the minimum possible deployment of resources.

An Assessment and Feedback Futures Project (AFFP) team has been established within the CEF in order to support the implementation of the new University’s Policy and Assessment Standards, including the use of education technologies where appropriate. The project is co-sponsored by the Dean of Coursework Studies, Professor Grady Venville and the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education Innovation) and Director of the CEF (Professor Gilly Salmon). The project is guided by the Assessment and Feedback Futures Project Plan; (ATTACHMENT H) which serves as a baseline document for defining the project scope, the project Key Result Areas and the work required to accomplish them. The completion date for the project is 31 December 2017.

The Assessment and Feedback Futures Project Team will report regularly to the EFSG, the Project Coordinator will provide a written report highlighting progress against the schedule; any project issues or new risks and the Project Team will be available to answer any questions. The report and minuted discussion will be forwarded to the Education Committee.

9. LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS – LMS USUAGE REF: F76456

In order to generate a better understanding of LMS users and usage, Google Analytics have been applied to UWA’s Blackboard Learn. Attached (ATTACHMENT I ) is a report from Mr Andrew Hu), CEF evaluating LMS usage between April 30th - May 30th.

10. BEAM PROJECT: DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT IN SEMESTER 1; 2016 – REF: F67456

The Blackboard Engagement and Measurement (BEAM) project aims to determine the level of engagement of staff and students in the UWA LMS. The project was initiated with the primary purpose to ascertain the level of engagement in the LMS. From quantitative data it aims to establish:

The extent of student engagement in the LMS; University-wide, faculty and school information on LMS engagement; and The extent of LMS engagement for units that have participated in the Carpe Diem design process.

For member’s information, a report detailing the BEAM project prepared by Mr Mark Paynter, CEF is attached (ATTACHMENT J).

11. CARPE DIEM –INTERVENTION PILOT STUDY (SUNSPOT) - REF: F76456Carpe Diem learning design methods are one of the main ways in which UWA staff are supported to create learning and teaching innovations, 257 units have been workshopped/ redesigned by June 2016. The Sunspot intervention study was designed to investigate the extent to which learning and teaching innovations implemented from Carpe Diem workshops are influencing the student experience of learning, engagement and satisfaction.

A report prepared by Mr Mark Paynter, CEF outlining the Sunspot Pilot Study is attached (ATTACHMENT K)
