NSW Carers Advisory Council December The NSW Carers Advisory Council held its December 2016 meeting at the Jubilee Room Parliament House, Sydney.

The Council’s young carer working group provided an update to the Minister, the Hon John Ajaka MLC about their work-plan progress and with feedback about employment opportunities for young carers and the Young Carer app (Who Cares?) http://www.facs.nsw.gov.au/reforms/carers/young_carers/young-carer-mobile-app

This Council meeting was the last for four long-standing members of the Carers Advisory Council - Yvonne Quadros, Elizabeth Ingram, Deborah Bewick and Cheryl Koenig.

The Minister officially thanked and congratulated each of them, acknowledging their significant contribution to the work of the Council and more broadly to carer issues and policy in NSW. Each of the outgoing Council members addressed the Council with reflections and insights about their time on the Council.

Representatives from FACS Carers team and FACS Legal presented on the Report of the Statutory review of the Carers (Recognition) Act 2010 which was tabled in parliament on 8 November 2016.

About the review: Minister Ajaka announced the commencement of the review on 29 February 2016. 800 people and 50 organisations had input to the review. The Report on the Review of the Carers (Recognition) Act 2010 was tabled in

Parliament on 8 November 2016, so is now a public document. The report outlines the objects of the Act, the requirement for the review, and the

review methodology. It summarises the feedback FACS received on each section of the Act and then sets out findings and recommendations (Department of Family and Community Services - NSW Carers (Recognition) Act 2010).

Overall Council members were positive about the review and its recommendations, including the recommendation that the Council have an independent chair, as this will enable the Council to be more functional and agile in providing advice.

The Council discussed a number of recent carer reforms including the NDIS, Information Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) and the draft model Integrated Carer Support Services (ICSS).

The NSW Carers Advisory Council has five working groups:

Each group spent time at the December meeting on their current work-plans.

The Council congratulated Council member Elizabeth Wall who has been appointed to the National Disability and Carers Advisory Council and was attending the first meeting in Canberra on 14 December 2016.

The Council received updates from NSW Health and Family and Community Services (FACS), and from other committees attended by Council members including the Carers Strategy Implementation Committee (CSIC).

The next Carers Advisory Council meeting is scheduled on Monday 27 February 2017.
