Development Officer, Prospect Research and Proposals

The Aga Khan Museum (AKM) in Toronto, Canada offers visitors a window into worlds unknown or unfamiliar: the artistic, intellectual, and scientific heritage of Muslim civilizations across the centuries from the Iberian Peninsula to China. Its mission is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the contribution that Muslim civilizations have made to world heritage. Through education, research, and collaboration, the Museum will inform and inspire audiences from all cultures by presenting art created in the Muslim world throughout the past fourteen centuries, along with current paths of artistic practice and cultural development. 

Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Development Officer, Prospect Research and Proposals is responsible for the dual mandate of collecting, organizing and disseminating information on current and potential donors to the Museum, while serving as the primary communications resource for the Development Team, responsible for generating a variety of communications products in support of the Museum’s fundraising programs.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and manage systems and procedures to meet the information needs of the Development Team, Museum Leadership and Volunteers, in preparation for contacting, cultivating and soliciting prospective donors to the Museum (Individuals, Corporations, Chari-table Foundations and Government).

Qualify prospective donors by researching and analyzing for connections to the Museum, giving potential and propensity to give, in order to establish priorities and strategies for the successful solicitation of donors.

Devise strategies for obtaining new prospects in order to ensure the ongoing development, expansion, and renewal of the prospect base.

Prepare detailed and up-to-date research briefings on prospects for the Development Team, Museum Leadership and Volunteers in advance of calls and events in order to obtain optimal outcomes.

Work in consultation with the Development Team to craft written materials in support of the major gifts campaign for the Museum. This will include customized funding proposals, project descriptions, fact sheets, presentations, brochures and fundraising collateral for pre-sentation to donors and prospective donors.

Develop content, write and edit a variety of publications including sponsorship proposals, grant applications, donor and Friend’s newsletters, customized stewardship and impact re-ports, website content, memos and presentations.

Prepare speaking remarks for Development Staff, Museum Leadership and Volunteers, in-cluding but not limited to gift announcements, exhibition and program openings, and stew-ardship events.

Development of event-related communications such as the Gala program, speaking notes, signage, promotional materials and media releases.

Ensure Museum brand standards, messaging and style guidelines are adhered to in all De-velopment materials, and provide advice to staff in terms of key messaging, language and format of donor communications.

Prioritize and manage multiple projects in a timely manner, meeting deadlines and managing supplemental material required to complete projects.

Maintain a high degree of motivation and superior work ethic consistent with the culture of the Development team and participate actively as a member of the team.

Qualifications & Experience

A University degree preferably an MLIS or equivalent, with a minimum 2 years extensive in-vestigative, research and writing experience; suitable combinations of education and experi-ence will be considered.

Demonstrated proficiency in the methods of information acquisition, including use of a multi-tude of online and print research resources.

Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, and present the resulting information in a clear and concise manner.

Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a track record for producing high-quality, persua-sive documents – particularly funding proposals, grant applications, impact reports and other fundraising materials – that have resulted in fundraising success.

Exceptional planning, organization, project management, prioritization, and time-manage-ment skills to manage multiple on-going projects simultaneously.

Ability to handle information ethically, accurately and confidentially. Computer literacy and competency with word-processing and spreadsheet applications,

fundraising and prospect management databases, and Internet skills. Experience with CRM moves management software an asset; Tessitura experience will be

advantageous. Occasional evening and weekend work at events, performances – flexible work hours re-

quired. Expressed interest in the mandate of the Museum. An affinity with the underlining goals and philosophy of the Aga Khan Development Network.
