[email protected] is a support group?

A support group can function for different reasons: it may be a peer support group (where you can share your stories with other carers), a campaigning group (where you lobby and use your influence for change), a respite group (where activities and speakers are arranged) an information group (where information to help you in your situation is shared), or it can be a combination of these. Essentially, a support group is a chance for you to access a break from your caring responsibilities.

Which one should I join?

Depending on your situation and what you want from a support group determines which one you should join. You should consider what you would like to gain from a support group, and investigate all the options available. Staff at the Carers Centre can support you to decide which group to join.

Why should I join?

Support groups are a great way to meet new people, who may be experiencing, or have experienced, similar situations to you. They are also a good way to gain information about other services which are available, which may be able to support you in your situation.

How do I join?

If you are interested in joining a support group, you should make contact with the named leader of the group. Discuss the group with them, and make sure the group is appropriate for your needs. Please do not turn up at the group without talking to the group leader first, unless the group is specifically stated as a drop in. Please note that not all of the advertised groups are run by the carers centre.

If you have any further questions, or would like to add your group to this list, please contact Portsmouth Carers Centre. Please note that we endeavour to ensure all information is correct and up to date; however the information printed is subject to change. If you are a group leader and can see any errors, please contact us.
