February 18, 2018 Lent 1WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning. Here are a some notes about our service:

Holy Communion Today We observe the biblical practice of member communion. In Holy Communion we not only receive forgiveness from God, but we also express a oneness in faith. If you are not a member of Living Savior and have not yet had the opportunity to learn what we believe and teach, we would ask that you please wait to join us for communion until you have done so. We look forward to sharing this special meal with you in the future.

Restrooms – The restrooms are located out the back doors and down the second hallway to the right.

Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

We recognize that our new sanctuary is a little “echo-y” and apologize for any sound difficulties. We are working to remedy the problem.

COMMON SERVICEOur worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God’s Word, recounting what he has done for us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Church and connects us to something much bigger than ourselves.

Understanding the Church Year - LentThe word “Lent” comes from an Old English word for spring (“lengthen,” the time of the year when the days grow longer). For the last 1700 years, the Church has set aside the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter as a time for repentance and prayer. During Lent we solemnly remember our Lord’s suffering and death, but it is not without hope. For we know that Jesus suffered and died and then rose victoriously on Easter morning. So while our rejoicing during Lent is muted and quiet (we omit “alleulias” and the “Gloria”), we live in the hope of Easter

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.

P: Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GODTHE FIRST LESSON Genesis 22:1-18Abraham was willing to give up his only son Isaac as a sacrifice to God. This was a test of Abraham’s faith and God never intended Abraham to carry this out. Rather, he promised he would send his own Son as a sacrifice for our sins.1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”“Here I am,” he replied.2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to

his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”“Here I am,” he replied.12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

In repentance, God leads us to turn from our sin to his Son, Jesus. In Christ we are shown God’s love, which we can never be separated from!

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be

slaughtered.”37 No, in all these things we are more than

conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

THE NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. (continued next page)

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY The Lamb (pg. 14)

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Midweek Worship Schedule

The season of Lent is a time of reflection and preparation. It is a time to both consider the condition of our hearts and lives and the words and works of Jesus as

he carried out our salvation. To aid in this reflection and preparation we will be holding midweek Lenten services. These services (the next five Wednesdays at 7

pm), distinct from our normal Sunday worship, all serve to focus our hearts and minds on God’s great work of salvation.
