• War in Europe in the 1700s– Europeans used to fighting wars using accepted rules

• Had enlistments and paid soldiers• Used militia as support

• Washington did not trust militia for major engagements

• Effect of War on Women– Women ran farms, businesses and families during war– Women supported troops during battle– Abigail Adams – John Adams’ wife
