New Delhi; 25 February, 2015: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Skilled India’, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), along with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) today announced the commencement of the finals of WorldSkills India in the capital. The inauguration was done by Shri Sunil Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). Some of the other dignitaries present at the event were Mr. Vijay Thadani, Chairman, NIIT and Mr. Dilip Chenoy, MD & CEO, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

The event will be held from 26th to 28th February, 2015 at Pragati Maidan, Hall No. 18 in Delhi. The skill competition will see a hundred youth chosen from 85 regional and 27 national competitions, competing to form the final squad of 27 that will represent India at the WorldSkills International Competition at Sau Paulo, Brazil in August this year.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Shri Sunil Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) said, “Skill development is not only a national mission but is also an economic necessity. It is imperative that we have a powerful skill ecosystem which will make India the ‘skill capital’ of the world. The WorldSkills India regional and national rounds conducted across 27 skills has established the fact that we have abundance of talent in our nation’s youth. It is time for us to showcase their talent at the global level. I am proud to see the level of enthusiasm in the finalists and wish them the very best for their future.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dilip Chenoy, MD & CEO, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) said, “NSDC led a contingent of 24 candidates who participated in the 2013 WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig, Germany where three participants won Medallions of Excellence – in Jewellery, Graphic design and IT Software solutions for Business. This year, we are sending 27 and look forward to bringing back many more laurels for the country. We are certain of the talent and skills that our finalists have and I wish them the very best.”

WorldSkills follows a 3 tier selection process, i.e. regional, national and final selections. The winners from the regional competitions participate at the national competition, where select two - five candidates (depending on the skill set) are selected in each category. These candidates undergo training for 5-6 months, before they compete at the final competition. The winner at the final selections will represent India at the WorldSkills International competition.

The India winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on the final day of the competition i.e. Saturday, 28th February, 2015.

About WorldSkills India

WorldSkills India is an initiative of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), which has been leading India's participation at WorldSkills International competitions since 2011. This was done to create an aspiration around the pursuit of skills training in our country and benchmark the skillsets of our youth against their counterparts in other parts of the world. Widely and informally regarded as the Skills Olympics, WorldSkills Competitions are held in different countries every two years and brings together over 1,000 participants, below 23 years, from across the world to compete in more than 46 skills.

The competition is organized by an Amsterdam based not-for-profit organization WorldSkills International. An Indian contingent of 24 candidates participated at 2013 WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig, Germany where three participants won Medallions of Excellence. Preparation for the next WorldSkills Competition to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in August 2015 is well underway.
