LEDET rewards greenest and cleanest municipalities in the province and celebrates World Wetlands Day It was on the on the 2 nd of February 2018 at Polokwane ( Bolivia Lodge) when LEDET awarded municipalities who have done excellent work in the advancement of environment and sustainable development in municipalities for the benefit of our communities who daily faces a challenge to improve the quality of their lives. The Greenest Municipal Competition focuses on the implementation of the National Waste Management Strategy. All the municipalities were given a responsibility to manage and protect the environment and ensure that all citizen live in a healthy environment which is free from harmful effects. This include principles of reducing, reusing and recycling waste materials and introduction of renewable energy initiatives. Through the Greenest Municipality Competition the department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism is able to ensure the right to a clean and healthy environment by collaborating with municipalities through assessing their environmental efforts and programmes. The results of GMC are as follows: 1 st position- Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality, 2nd position- Polokwane local Municipality, 3 rd position-Lephalale Local Municipality. Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality, winner of the provincial Greenest Municipality competition will represent Limpopo Province in the GMC national competition. Wetlands makes cities liveable in many important ways, they reduce the flooding, replenish drinking water, filter waste and provide urban green spaces and are source of livelihoods. This calls for all municipalities to consider protecting wetlands within the province. The department has arranged World Wetlands Day awareness workshops in all five district.
