With a few pieces of real fruit near you, talk about the shapes, colours and the taste of fruit. Talk about the fruit you like best. What do you eat when you are very hungry? What do you drink when you are very thirsty?

Talk about the holes that the caterpillar made in the fruit. Expand on ways snails and other animals eat: https://youtu.be/HEbuaoaC2Uk

Do you know other stories of hungry animals, maybe a hungry wolf, a fox, an ogre or a troll? Here are a few titles for further reading: Little Red Riding Hood, The Fox and the Crow, Jack and the Bean Stalk, The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Opportunity 2 Think and Experiment.

Let’s think about light, darkness and colour: 1)Find a colourful picture from one of your story books. 2)In the evening look at the picture and name a few colours in it. 3)Ask an adult to switch off the light for a few seconds. 4)Then look at the colourful picture again. Can you still see the colours in the dark? What helps us to see colours?

Let’s experiment with colour. Point at orange, green and purple in the pictures below.

On a large piece of paper using only red, blue and yellow 1) Mix red with yellow to draw an orange, 2) Mix blue with yellow to draw two green leaves, 3) Mix blue with red to draw three purple plums.

Opportunity 3 Recalling

Do you remember the fruit that the hungry caterpillar ate through from Monday to Friday?

On Monday he ate through ____ apple.

On Tuesday he ate through ____ pears.

On Wednesday he ate through ____ plums.

On Thursday he ate through ____ strawberries.

On Friday he ate through ____ oranges.

Opportunity 4 Searching and Exploring

This is the hungry caterpillar’s menu for Saturday.

Can you point to food that is meat, sweets, dairy, fresh fruit or vegetables?

Fresh fruit

vegetables

dairy

meat

sweets

Look for food in your kitchen; look in the fridge, in the freezer, in cupboards... Point at each item, say what it is and answer the following questions:

1. Do we have this for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner or as a snack?

2. Do we need to peel, to wash or to scrub this before eating or before cooking it?

Opportunity 5 Days of the Week in Sequence

Here is an old poem about the days of the week.

On Monday we wash,

On Tuesday we dry,

On Wednesday we iron,

On Thursday we fry,

On Friday we shop,

On Saturday we play,

On Sunday we rest ...

...the whole of the day.

These are rhyming words: say - clay, sun – fun.

Find rhyming words in the poem: Which word rhymes with fry - _ _ _ and which word rhymes with day - _ _ _ _?

Can you sing the days of the week?

Opportunity 6 Let’s Pretend.

Listen to this song and pretend to fly like a butterfly in the sky, stretch up so high, twist, sleep through the night and roll like a butterfly.

https://youtu.be/oYI0TPJOuGk

Butterflies fly but caterpillars don’t. They just crawl. Can you pretend you are a caterpillar crawling as you reach for food? Listen and move to this lovely song;

Caterpillars Only Crawl https://youtu.be/vnNmZmQ6Z00

Opportunity 7 Choosing What to Eat

Shall we make a menu?

What would you like to eat on the different days?

If you want to eat an apple and a sandwich on Monday draw a small apple and a sandwich in the space near Monday. Here is an example:

On Monday

On Monday

On Tuesday

On Wednesday

On Thursday

On Friday

On Saturday

On Sunday

Opportunity 8 Let’s Move.

To whom do you say hello! every morning?

With whom do you spend your day? How do you spend your day? What do you like to play with? Do you sing? Do you dance? Do you paint?

In this song children tell us what they do every day. Move and sing along with their Hello Song.

Opportunity 9 Getting Creative

You can learn how to draw a butterfly by following this link: https://youtu.be/MIAiglTFgLk

If you enjoy drawing butterflies you may draw a few in different shapes and sizes. Prepare a green collage for a garden setting and then stick on it the butterflies you draw. Use as many colours as you like including your favourite colour.

What is your favourite colour? Here is a song that helps you think of colours. Watch the puppets as they sing about their favourite colours: https://youtu.be/zxIpA5nF_LY

Opportunity 10 Learning and Discovering

The butterfly has 6 legs, 3 on the left side and 3 on the right side. The butterfly has 4 wings, 2 on each side. A caterpillar can eat a whole leaf but the butterfly can only suck liquid (nectar).

To learn about the stages in the life cycle of the butterfly from egg to caterpillar (or larva)

to cocoon (or chrysalis) to butterfly (adult)

click on this link: https://youtu.be/7PG2cPqLpKc

Finally, here are the 10 most beautiful butterflies in the world: https://youtu.be/KO92tayGydg

One of these beauties has a number that is bigger than 80 and less than 90 on its wings. What is the number? _ _ Watch it. It tells you in the feature.
