Why do Zombies love brains?

What do you think makes brains so appealing to zombies? Perhaps it’s because the brain is where our entire body is coordinated, where our memories are stored, and where our

senses are interpreted.

I bet you’re thinking, “that’s a strange question”. You’re right, it may be, but in April, staff members attended a Dementia training workshop. The zombie heading this was on one of the worksheets to teach staff a little about the brain, how it works and how changes affect

people.

When someone is suspected of h aving dementia, it means at least 2 parts of the brain are failing.

There are 5 basic functions to the brain. (Please refer to the colored picture below)

A. Pink area of the brain = Frontal lobe = Reward, attention, planning, short-term memory.

B. Blue = Parietal Lobe = Spatial sense, touch, language, navigation & recognition.

C. Yellow = Occipital lobe = Perception of motion, space & color & visual input.

D. Green = Temporal Lobe = Visual memories, new memories, sensory input, understanding language, hearing & long-term memory.

E. Purple = Cerebellum = Fine motor control, fear, pleasure & timing.

Baby Boomers, born 1946-1964 are the newest members of the “older” population. The “older” population is expected to grow by close to 77 million by 2030.

A few indications that aging is NOT normal may be for a person to make up words for objects when they can’t remember the actual name, mood changes, poor judgement, withdrawal from work or social activities or difficulty completing familiar tasks. While changes may be hard for us as family, friends or caregivers to see imagine how the person affected feels.

Body language makes up 55% of what you communicate! Facial expressions are the second most important way we determine communication and it is the first part of the person we look at. So with that being said, the proper way to approach and assist a resident, 1. Visual, 2. Verbal and 3. Touch. We can then honor every resident by making sure we know their personal routines, respecting their privacy and promoting their independence. We also need to remember to do things in their time. A good rule of thumb to follow is to give them 20 seconds to process what you are telling them or asking them to do. It will be less frustrating for the both of you. We have to remember that they are doing the best that they can.

Lastly, we were taught, stay thirsty my friend and fill your glass!

HEARTLAND MARIMBA

The Heartland Marimba Ensemble is one of two touring groups of the Heartland Marimba organization. They perform concert tours throughout the heartland states in June, July & December. Their music spans many genres including classical, jazz, tango, ragtime, Americana, pops, holiday favorites and circus. The apprentice artists are stellar performers when chosen for the group. As part of the experience they are able to work closely with Heartland Marimba founder, Matthew Coley. This helps them to enter their professional career beyond school with sharpened skills and broader, more comprehensive experience behind them. (This is an excerpt from the brochure)

Heartland Marimba was here to perform for our residents on June 11th.
