1 st Class Work to be done at home until June 12 th You should be reading for at least 15 minutes every day . If you have no suitable books at home there are lots of free e-books at https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page or at https://readon.myon.co.uk/ . Monday June 8th : 1) We are finished our Starlight apart from the Reading Skills Test on pages 70 and 71. I want you to complete these on your own without any adult help and send the pages to me on WhatsApp. 2) Maths: Busy at Maths page 148 and p149. I hope you are managing the re- grouping OK? If not do contact me. A few pointers – (1) Sometimes you need to re-group, sometimes you do not. (2) If you have to re-group don’t forget to write your little 1 in the tens column. When doing the word-problems on p149 write the sum on the page alongside the problem. This is called roughwork and will help you stop making mistakes. 3) Active Challenge: Do 10 wall press-ups, hop on the spot for 20 hops (every two hops change legs). Rest for 20 seconds and repeat. Try it three times. Tuesday June 9th : 1) Maths: Busy at Maths p150 and 151. We’re back to working on money for the rest of the week. Take a look at the coins on top of page 150. Better still get these six coins in your own house. Inspect them closely. What is different about them? What is the same about them? Play the game where someone outs a coin in your hand behind your back and you have to guess the coin. When doing p151 write your roughwork on the page to help you. 2) Science/Geography: The Solar System. Earth is one of eight planets that travel around (orbit) the sun. Have a look at Small World p86. It takes Earth 365¼ days to make one complete orbit of the sun – that is where we get a year from (every 4 years we get an extra day called a leap day – we had one this year). Do you think the year on each planet is the same length? Why? Which are longer/shorter? It’s amazing to think that earth (and us all) is whizzing around the sun at over 100,000 kilometers per hour and that that we are spinning round at over 1000 kilometers per hour.

2) Science/Geography: The Solar System. Earth is one of eight planets that travel around (orbit) the sun. Have a look at Small World p86. 1) Maths: Busy at Maths p152. This page should be straight forward for you but there are 25 calculations to do so you just have this page to do today. Remember when adding the coins start with the biggest value coins first, then the next biggest and so on. Maybe tick each coin as you add it so that you don’t mis-calculate.

2) Geography: Why don’t people in Australia and South Africa fall off the planet? Why when you throw something in the air does it always fall down? Are people in Australia and South Africa upside down or are people in Ireland upside down? What have these words in common? – astronaut, astronomy, asteroid, astronomical, astrology, astronomer, astrophysics. The prefix astro- is Greek for star. Complete Small World p88.Remember we designed and made our own astronaut suit? https://www.manisterns.ie/sese.htmlRead about how to become an astronaut on Small World p89 and complete the labels. Would you like to be an astronaut? Why? Maybe you heard about the SpaceX launch last week https://www.rte.ie/news/2020/0530/1143566-space-x/ What does earth look like from the International Space Station? Check out these sites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg9R4yykvqU https://www.esa.int/kids/en/Multimedia/Videos/Paxi_on_the_ISS/A_view_of_Earth

3) Try these Warrior Yoga poses

Thursday June 11th:1) Maths: Busy at Maths p153. This is like yesterday’s page so the same advice applies. If

you can colour each number on the wordsearch a different colour.

2) History: Space Travel – humans have been fascinated by space ever since they looked up and saw the stars. Humans have only been travelling into space in the last 60 years. We have so much yet to learn. Have an adult help you read page 90 and 91 of your Small World to learn about the history of human travel into space. Complete the activities. Here’s a video about the history of travel into space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f02BzO1wxb0 You can listen in to the astronauts on the ISS here - http://spaceref.com/news/international-space-station-live-video-feed-by-nasa.html

3) Active Challenge: Use chalk (or even a “writing stone”) to draw out a hopscotch grid on any

cement area. There are different designs - you chose your own. You can check out the rules of hopscotch here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZzswQaICfM

Friday June 12th:1) Maths: Busy at Maths Book p154. The last page on money. This is very like the work you

have been doing all week except the amounts can go up to 99c. Take care with number 3 – draw the least number of coins to make the amount shown on the purse.

2) Art: Make your very own Solar System Mobile. You will need rigid card (a cereal box would work), scissors, string/wool, glue/blu-tac and a long piece of stick. Print out the planets page below and stick it onto the rigid card. Cut them out and hang them or stick them from string of various lengths? Do you remember the planet names and the order (My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Noodles). You could add stars to make your mobile more realistic.

3) Active Challenge: Balance on one body part for 10 seconds. Run as fast as you can for 20 seconds. Rest for 20 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
