responses on the food chart (e.g. have every student taste the lemon and describe it).
8. Teacher will guide students to describe the properties of the food items.
9. Class discussion.
Assessment:
Throughout this lesson the teacher will be observing students during whole group and small
group activities. Observations should include but not limited to student participation, use of
descriptive or vocabulary words, understanding of lesson and following directions. Teacher will
check for understanding during the read aloud by discussing the book including what the
different tastes are. This will keep students interactive throughout the reading. To further check
for understanding on the lesson teacher will observe and ask questions to guide students to
describe how each food item taste and record responses. Students will be assessed on their
participation as this gives students the opportunity to use descriptive words and get familiarize
with the different tastes. The teacher will have a whole group discussion at the end of the
activity, while assessing students on their participation which includes finding out how students
felt and some of the tastes and/or food items they liked and disliked and an explanation of why.

food items. Students will be assessed through their participation, discussion and sharing findings
during their small groups. The record sheets used to record students’ observations will be used to
check for further understanding of the activity. The teacher will also have a whole group

Week/ Day: Week 4- Day 18
Grade: Kindergarten
Time: 30 Minutes
Materials: read aloud book, assorted flavored jelly beans, plastic bowl, measuring cups, water,
jug, answer sheets
Essential Question: How do our senses help us explore and understand the world around us?
Objectives: Students will:
- Work as a team using their sense of taste to predict the different flavors.
Procedures:

checking for understanding of the lesson by observing students as they work together to classify
the different tastes into four categories; sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Students will be assessed on
how they work with their group including discussions on what each item taste like, counting the
number of food items in each category and sorting the categories from highest to lowest. The
