Year 6 Home Learning

Week beginning:

11th May 2020

Firstly, but most importantly, we hope that you are all well. Also, we understand that this is a challenging time for us all and want to reassure you that we are available to answer any queries or concerns you may have during this time, no matter how big or small.

Please send in any questions, and also photographs or scans of what the children have been doing at home…The email address is [email protected] . We are blogging home learning and hope to make a newsletter with some examples of home learning included in it. Emails will be checked between the hours of 10am and 11am, so long as staff are well.

This document looks longer, as we have tried to include links and further documents within it, to make it easier for you to find the relevant bits and pieces to help. Some of the links are to our own new YouTube channel, Bressinghamlearningfun! at https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bressinghamlearningfun We hope that this will help and inspire home learning further.

Please continue to be aware about internet safety with your children. There was some information about this on one of our recent ParentMail letters. We will do as much as we can to support with any needs you may have during these unprecedented times.

evidence from the text; you could use the questions in ‘ongoing learning’ at the base of this document. There are lots of exciting books on the Oxford Owl website:

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/Username – kestrelclass2020Password – Keepreading!

Remember to read a range of genres of books – fiction, non-fiction, poetry etc.

2. Complete the Mike Hall guided reading activity. The most challenging is ***. If you get really stuck with the reading, work through this with an adult, but try to find the answers yourself This activity is available on the Home Learning page for this year group.

Writing This week we are writing a descriptive poem about a hunting animal. Before writing, there is a reading task, led by Mrs Gudde on a YouTube clip- understanding how to write a descriptive poem, by looking at one, about a grey owl.

https://youtu.be/F633nheP52Q

Then there is some help with how to use what you have learnt to write your own poem. You will need to do lots of thinking, so you could spread this task over several days- perhaps doing the reading part one day, collecting ideas another day, then writing over a couple of days, before editing/ proofreading and best copies.

There are some documents to help you on the home learning page: a copy of the poem, a grid to look at different images in the poem and a planning sheet for your own poem.

To decide when to start a new line, think of putting phrases on different lines and that the first word of a new line has a little more emphasis. In the Grey Owl poem, each stanza is just one sentence.

Remember to include your targets, the language features and the structure, with your very best spelling and handwriting.

We are really looking forward to seeing your poems; you can illustrate them too! Please send them in to your class email address and have fun!

Science Plants Topic

Firstly, I hope your seeds are growing well at home. Please don’t forget to record your plant growth.

In this week’s Science lesson we will be investigating the question: which parts of plants do we eat?

See the You Tube clip to introduce the task: https://youtu.be/x4npVf6Mxds

For this activity you will need a range of fruits, vegetables and parts of plants which cover the following groups:- Root vegetables eg potatoes, carrots, parsnips;- Stems and shoots eg celery, any sort of onion, rhubarb;- Leaves eg spinach, lettuce, cabbage etc;- Flowers eg cauliflower, broccoli etc;- Fruits eg tomatoes, peppers, apples, cucumber, oranges etc;- Nuts and seeds eg sweetcorn kernels, sunflower seeds, peas etc.

You could also make written labels of these different fruits and

vegetables to complete this task.

The purpose of this activity is to classify your fruit, vegetables and parts of plants according to the part of the plant which is eaten. You could use a table to record your findings:

Root Stem/shoot Leaf

Flower Fruit Seed

Next, you could use your collection of fruit and vegetables to create your own art work, following the style of the artist Guiseppe Arcimboldo. He was an Italian painter, famous for creating portrait heads from objects such as fruit and vegetables. If you look at this portrait upside down what can you see?

We look forward to seeing your creations!

Ongoing learning

Please continue to regularly read at home. Remember, reading to your child is as important as listening to them read to you!

If you read a particularly good book, it would be great if you could write a short book review about it to recommend it to your classmates! Here are some questions you could answer about it:What was the book about?Where are parts of your book set? Draw a picture of one of the settings and add labels using evidence from the text. What was your favourite part? Explain using evidence from the text.Who was your favourite character? Why?Who would you recommend this book to and why?Find some of the challenging words within the text and explain to someone at home what they mean.Remember to read a range of different genres of books: fiction, non-fiction, poetry etc.

Television:Everyone loves a bit of television from time to time, and we have a few recommendations of some television shows that are fun, but also educational!

There are also many other wonderful learning experiences that you can access at home. The weekly learning activities are just a guide. Please use your discretion to what works best for you and your family.

Play and enjoy spending precious time with your family. Enjoy being outside and enjoy the endless opportunities this provides.

There are many practical ideas for things you can do at home on the home learning page.
