U3A Report for March 2020 Gill Stonham was the speaker at February's U3A meeting. Gill's topic was the History of the London Underground and it was clear that she had undertaken a huge amount of research on this subject. In a comprehensive presentation Gill explained that the London Underground opened in 1863 and that originally steam engines operated the trains. There were three classes and third class was an open carriage. Imagine the steam and dirt! Gill took the audience of over 100 Saxilby U3A members through over 150 years of Underground history and this included some astonishing facts. Half a million mice live in 97 miles of Underground tunnels, and 47 million litres of water are pumped out every day. Only 45% of the Underground is underground. Finally, Gill took us through the Crossrail project and the huge changes that this will make. A fascinating presentation" The speaker for the March meeting on 19 th March will be Peter Robinson with his presentation ’Industrial Trail Through Early Lincoln’. We have been to a production of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at the Drill Hall, to complement our look at the Gothic Novel. We are also planning a visit to LPAC to see a touring production of Jane Eyre later in the year. In future meetings we shall examine the place of Adventure Stories for Boys, the role of literature for ages 5-11, and what it takes to write a Biography or Autobiography. Also coming up we will examine how travel is represented; how is slavery portrayed in literature/film? and how did Agatha Christie’s work become so popular? We usually meet on the morning of the 2nd Monday of the month. For more information please contact Anne on 01522 702532
