Self-Care of minor injuries & illnesses

A large range of common illnesses and injuries can be treated at home simply with over-the-counter medicines and plenty of rest. This could include treatment for the following:

Minor aches and pains Minor sprains, sports injuries, grazed knees and

scars Coughs, colds, blocked noses, fevers and sore

throatsBelow are some other top tips to take care of yourself:

1. Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home. Find out what should be included by visiting NHS Choices website.

2. Speak to your local pharmacist3. Get your flu jab during the winter season- You may

be entitled to a free one-ask you GP or pharmacist for details.

4. Keep active to stay physically and mentally well.5. Be mindful that symptoms can last longer than you

think- sore throats can last an average of 8 days.6. Don’t forget- Antibiotics do not work for sore

throats, coughs or colds.

Medication for minor ailment and self-limiting conditions should be bought from a community pharmacist after seeking their appropriate advice:

Treating on-off/ non serious constipation and/or diarrhoea.

Hayfever preparations. Eye drops for minor eye infections. Treatment for occurrence of head-lice

infestation, Head-lice lotions and shampoos. Treatment of occasional bouts of Dyspepsia. Treatment of oral or vaginal thrush.

I Worked in mental health back home in Tasmania, Australia. I then moved to London in 2009. I Worked as a community nurse for several years in over 20 health care centres around central, west, north west, north and south London. I then became the Camden Community Respiratory Nurse Specialist and case managed complex co-morbid COPD patients for seven years. I Moved to Leigh-On-Sea with my fiance in 2016 with a plan to start a family. I started a local job this year at the Emergency Care Practitoner at Pall Mall surgery with the goal of providing excellent care to the local population.

NEW DEMENTIA NURSE- JACKIE SMITH

I trained as a mental health nurse at Runwell hospital gaining experience in psychiatric emergencies including working in female disturbed wards. I gained further experience working within the mental health day care setting (adults including drug & alcohol). I transferred into older peoples mental health and have remained within this area. I’ve been fortunate enough to obtain qualifications in this area including 3 Diplomas, (Dementia care) BSC (older people MH) and a part masters. I am also a nurse prescriber within dementia care and hold a qualification for identification of a dementia syndrome.

For the last 20 years my focus has been to provide good dementia care to the local population and I am

Each GP Registrar is with us for up to 18 months some consultations are recorded for training purposes, but only with the prior consent of the patient. You will always be asked in advance if you are happy for the student to be present.As a training practice we are inspected every three years and medical records are inspected for quality not content. If you have any objections, please let us know and your notes will be withdrawn from inspection.

Patient birthday InvitesAs from last year, patients are now invited annually in the month of their birthdays for conditions that need regular

monitoring. (Diabetes/ Heart disease / Kidney function/ COPD/ Asthma/

Rheumatoid arthritis/ Thyroid function). This service includes a review of your treatment, information and important medical checks.

BLOOD TEST RESULTSPlease call the surgery 72 working hours after you have had the test done for the results. A clinical member of staff will view the results and mark if they are normal or if you need to be seen. Reception staff can then inform you of the outcome. On occasions the hospital will telephone a result to us if the test is of concern, in which case we will contact you directly. Please ensure we have an up to date contact number for you.
