The Peak Academy - Home Learning Group: Arnside Date: 4 th May – Week 3 Subject: Art and Design Learning Outcome: Project Theme – Architecture To identify the key features required for a successful building. To experiment with media and process, adapting ideas and outcomes as we go (problem solving). To imagine and role-play what it is like to be an architect and a builder (real world applications) To construct a building Learning Task: Week 1 - You researched a chosen architect: Frank Gehry, Hundertwasser, Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano, Lloyd Wright, Norman Foster or Antoni Gaudi Week 2 – You used 3D forms (and the art elements line, shape, tone and form) to draw a castle. Week 3 – You are going to be an architect and a builder and construct your own building! FIRST – Before you can begin to construct your building, you need to decide what type of building you wish to make. Have a look at the ‘Architecture types’ pdf and decide what type of building you would like to construct (you may decide to combine more than one type). You may find watching the first two videos helpful here, to show you how ideas can be generated. NEXT – You need to decide what materials you are going to make it from. There are lots of potential ideas, but the main thing is that you can use anything you have available at home. This could be lego, wooden blocks, cardboard, food packages, things from your recycling bin etc. Below are some images of the structures created by some of my past students: These 4 were built with cheaper version of Lego, and students were given a box of 1000 bricks and 1 lesson ONLY to build their building or buildings. These students were not allowed to use glue and had to think of other ways to construct their structures. They had recycled cardboard, string and masking tape. I love the cut and slot staircase.

• To identify the key features required for a successful building.• To experiment with media and process, adapting ideas and outcomes as we go (problem

solving).• To imagine and role-play what it is like to be an architect and a builder (real world

applications)• To construct a building

Learning Task: Week 1 - You researched a chosen architect: Frank Gehry, Hundertwasser, Zaha Hadid,

Renzo Piano, Lloyd Wright, Norman Foster or Antoni Gaudi Week 2 – You used 3D forms (and the art elements line, shape, tone and form) to draw a

castle.

Below are some images of the structures created by some of my past students:

These 4 were built with cheaper version of Lego, and students were given a box of 1000 bricks and 1 lesson ONLY to build their building or buildings.

These students were not allowed to use glue and had to think of other ways to construct their structures. They had recycled cardboard, string and masking tape. I love the cut and slot staircase.

Below there are a few YouTube clips of homemade buildings, some are child size, others are smaller and some are quite complicated and detailed. I am only asking you to construct one building, but you may decide to build a street or city, depending on resources, ideas and time.

THEN – Do a little plan. This plan can be quite simple, no more than 1 piece of paper. It should include bullet points of:

The architecture features: the things you wish to include (like stairs, towers, a triangular roof etc.)

The Purpose: what the building will be used for (shopping centre, place of worship, house etc.)

A little sketch of what you want it to look like (this can be as simple or detailed as you like, remember the examples in the first two videos)

What your inspiration is? Any links to your chosen architect (from week 1). Use your planning sheet to evaluate as you go – what problems did you come up against and

how do you solve them?

FINALLY – Get making, the possibilities are endless! If you don’t believe me, watch the last video link, a real sized house made entirely from Lego.Remember it is ok for your design to develop as you go, make sure to document your changes on your planning sheet, this shows development and that you have learnt from challenges (problem solving).

Extension – Did you know 100 million people use Minecraft to create their own worlds, towns and cities.Maybe you have a computer game or app that you love to use. Could you create a digital building? You may use something like Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, Little Big Planet, Animal crossing, The Sims etc. Key questions: What is the difference between an architect and a builder? What problems did you come up against and how did you solve them?Do you think your building would be practical?Links to useful websites/ video clips:Think like an architect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmHoGicPQQQArchitecture should be more like Minecraft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIsIKv1lFZw

Remember for every piece of work you send in you could earn up to 5 praise points and points = rewards.
