Thursday 7th January

Here we go again! Remember to try your best and enjoy practising your super skills.

Reading Workshop tasks

Let’s start the day with a wordsearch! Try to find 9 of our year 4 key spellings in the grid below. They are all words we have practised in class before, but make sure you have a quick check to make sure you can spell them all correctly.

Now practise putting these word lists in alphabetical order.

Numeracy

For this task you need to make sure you set the columns out correctly and place each digit in the correct column. Look at my example. As an extension activity, once you have the total number of centimetres jumped, try to turn the distance into metres – again look at my example.

There are 3 tricky word problems for questions 6, 7 and 8. Remember to read the question carefully and record all of your working out.

There is another addition task sheet below if you are looking for more…

Literacy

Time for a traditional tale from Norway now, quite a scary one at that!! Be warned!!

Go to Espresso – KS2 – English – Traditional Tales (lower)

Click on the video of ‘The Three Sisters Who Fell Into the Mountain’ and listen carefully to the story.

Next go to the ‘Activities’ and complete the quiz from the same story to see how well you listened.

Finally go to the ‘Printable Resources’ section and complete the first part of the ‘Three Sisters’ task which is all about how the words make you feel and what you are expecting to happen. You don’t need to print the sheet out, you could write your ideas straight into your workbooks. Check all sentences make sense and spellings are correct.

I want you to write your own story on Friday, which is the second part of the task so leave that part for now. If you have printed the task out keep the second sheet ready for tomorrow.

PE

As every Monday and Thursday afternoons are timetabled for our PE sessions, it would be really good if you could try to keep up your fitness while you are working at home. Try to log on to Joe Wicks who is creating 3 new sessions each week for you – every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

ART

Thursday afternoons are usually your art and PE sessions with Miss Sinclair and she will be setting your art challenges over the next few weeks. We are looking at the work of the French impressionist painter, Georges Seurat, in particular, his pointillism technique of applying colour to create images.

We will still be completing our own pointillism masterpieces but we will wait until we are back in the classroom for that. First, I would like you to do a little research and find out about Georges Seurat. When was he born? Where did he live? What are his famous pieces of work? How did he apply the paint or colour onto his pieces? Research some facts yourself and try to write a paragraph about this famous painter.

Pointillism is the technique of using dots to create images. Placing dots close together gives a darker, greater depth of colour and placing the dots further apart creates a lighter, softer shade. Look at the example at the top of the sheet below and notice how the shades darken as the dots are placed closer together.

Primary colours (red, blue and yellow) and secondary colours (green, orange and purple) can mix together to create many other colours and shades and this is what we will be experimenting with over the next few weeks.

Below is a sheet which you can use to practise and experiment developing shades of colour. Firstly, try to create a range of light through to dark shades, using only one colour. Then you can experiment with the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow as well as creating shades of colour too. Enjoy!
