Information about Logic Studio SchoolLogic Studio School will offer a unique educational and business partnership specialising in Computing Technologies and International Logistics; a joined up approach to education which just makes sense and a provision which is ambitious for our students and their future. Young people enjoying learning, equipped with the necessary skills, a clear idea of where they are going and what success feels like is fundamental if we are to change their lives.

Logic Studio School (LSS) will open its doors to students aged 14- 19 in September 2016. LSS will offer a combination of rigorous academic qualifications where the outcomes are made explicit through real-life structured work experiences, combined with a small school approach, which personalises learning, will ensure students achieve excellence. LSS will aim to do things differently, to revolutionise educational provision by giving students what they need: specialised skills, high levels of business literacy and numeracy and a readiness to enter industries that need them.

Logic Studio School will sit in a multi-academy trust alongside Feltham Community College and has the following clear and deliverable vision:

sustainable partnerships with local employers to enrich the learning experience and develop a strong work ethic

Page 8: €¦ · Web viewThe Studio School is a new concept in education, which seeks to address the growing gap between the skills and knowledge that young people require to succeed, and

a curriculum that is relevant and engaging to prepare our students for today, tomorrow and the future

cutting edge technologies to acquire knowledge, deepen understanding and enhance teaching for learning

risk taking, supporting students to learn from their mistakes and develop resilience, developing the skills required by employers

aspiration for all students to progress successfully from LSS into employment with career prospects, or further education.

The rationale for LSS’s establishment is clearly linked to the local economy. The importance of Heathrow as a hub for business in Hounslow is clearly evidenced as is the significant growth in the IT industry in the local area, which is hampered by the lack of an appropriately skilled workforce.

Our business partners are keen to support LSS, to grow new talent and to shape their future workforce. LSS will ensure that relationships with our business partners are sustainable and organic, with advantages for both sides. Crucially, students will spend a significant portion of their time in real work which goes far beyond work related learning or work experience offered by schools in the area.

In Years 10 and 11, students will have an equivalent of one day of work experience per fortnight. This opportunity will be created in the first instance by our business partners, Gaia Technologies, DHL and Tudor Park Enterprises who will manage and support a range of in-house ‘workfloors’, allowing students to develop their skills in a supported training environment.

Post-16, students will build on their various ‘workfloor’ experiences and participate in the equivalent of two days of real work each week for which they may be remunerated. As a result students will gain a real understanding of how businesses work and the skills that are required in order to succeed in this environment

The organisational structure of LSS will reflect the unique approach to the delivery of the curriculum. At its heart is the insight that project based learning can better suit the needs of many young people in our catchment area. This is perhaps best encapsulated by our innovative Community Common Room which uses locally orientated projects to engage young people with their community. The proposed staffing structure reflects this approach, with staff facilitating students’ learning rather than passing on knowledge as they would in a traditional school. Instead of teachers, we will have learning coaches and class sizes will be small. In addition every student will be assigned a personal coach who will meet them weekly for an individual one to one session to review progress and monitor their personal learning programmes. Personal coaches will assist students in linking together all aspects of life, including their work programmes, to ensure that their time at LSS is optimised and that they exceed expectations, reaching their goals. Each day there will be a PREP session where students ‘Proactively - Recap, Revise and Prepare’. Students will reflect on completed work, identify any gaps in learning, save examples of their very best work in their digital portfolio and prepare for the next day's lessons.

The Curriculum at Logic Studio SchoolPre-16 - The curriculum will offer full access to the ‘Progress 8’ suite, with a particular emphasis on English and Maths at Grade C or above. Moored around this academic core there will be individual pathways enriching the learning opportunities for every student, maximising buy-in and therefore success. The approach to teaching for learning will be unique and exciting, using every opportunity to learn through themed projects and innovative 3D technology. The importance of the core will be recognised through a distinct timetable allocation as follows: English (5 lessons of 50 minutes), Mathematics (5 lessons of 50 minutes per week), Science Dual Award (6 lessons of 50 minutes per week). Ample time will be allocated to the specialism of LSS and the 3 option choices will each have 4 lessons per week. For those following the English Baccalaureate route Spanish can be chosen alongside a Humanities qualification. In addition all students will take a Business Administration qualification. This will be delivered through the innovative CCR, in order to ensure that students are fully prepared for the standards expected in their multi-disciplinary project work and ‘workfloor’ training. Similar arrangements will be made for students joining at age 16 where appropriate.

The specialised option subjects will be in business and computing technologies. Statutory requirements in terms of R.E and P.E will be met through PREP, PBL and Committee time. Every student will have a timetabled ‘Coaching’ period, addressing literacy and numeracy skills and building their general knowledge. Teaching for learning strategies will support students to become proactive and independent learners best prepared for the academic rigour of the new GCSEs and terminal examinations.

Post 16- It is anticipated that most will want to build on their achievements in one of the specialisms by opting for subsidiary diplomas, diploma, or extended diploma courses. LSS will also facilitate access to a range of more traditional AS and A2 options, which will be delivered in consortium with FCC Sixth Form. Ample CPD and Inset time will be allotted to staff from FCC to ensure a consistency in delivery and recognition of LSS teaching for learning principles. LSS’s commitment to small class sizes will be ensured by the Executive Headteacher and Principal.

All post-16 students will have a unique offer. They will each have access to personalised coaching and will complete the equivalent of twelve hours of work placements each week. Teaching will mirror that of universities, students will be expected to drive their own learning and ultimately consult with the learning coach rather than rely on them. This will be facilitated through a timetable which requires students to prepare materials in advance of their lessons in independent study sessions.
