The Department’s functions and services include disability services; child protection and family support; social and affordable housing; youth justice; community initiatives and remote regional services reform.

Role StatementThe Commercial Operations Division, as part of the Department of Communities, is responsible for leading the land, housing and built-form construction activities of the agency. It’s about more than building houses – it’s about creating vibrant and inclusive communities that meet the needs of all types of people and contribute to individual and community wellbeing.
Commercial Operation’s objectives are:
1. maintaining and delivering the dwellings and assets required to enable the Department of Communities to deliver its services;
2. delivering affordable and diverse land and built-form housing to support the efficient functioning of the Western Australian housing market; and
3. creating and recreating the diverse and inclusive communities.
The Planning Assistant provides research and business support associated with core activities of the Town Planning and Urban Design Section relating to planning and urban design projects. Collects and maintains data, prepares reports and correspondence on a range of town planning and urban design associated matters. Provides administrative support to Branch management and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities1. PLANNING AND URBAN DESIGN RESEARCH
1.1.Conducts research and provides information on a range of urban design and town
planning projects for the Branch.
1.2.Collects, collates and maintains data relevant to the Branch and provides reports as
directed.
1.3.Prepares briefing notes, submissions and correspondence relating to such matters as
the development potential of land capacity for yield and a variety of issues involving local
Government authorities and other parties.
1.4.Prepares heritage referrals and assists external parties with research to prepare
heritage assessments.
2. BUSINESS SUPPORT2.1.Liaises internally and externally with other Government Departments and members of
the public on behalf of the Branch.
2.2.Provides administrative support to the Branch Manager and other senior Branch staff as
required.
2.3.Plans internal and external meetings, functions and travel as directed, including
preparing agendas, minutes, briefing materials and itineraries.

Essential Work-Related Requirements (Selection Criteria)1. Demonstrated experience in researching and analysing information relating to town planning
and urban design.
2. Substantial experience in PC-based applications including the use of word processing and
presentation (Power-Point) packages, spreadsheets and databases.
3. Sound verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with personnel
at all levels.
4. Sound written skills with the ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence.
5. Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
DESIRABLE
1. Qualifications in town planning, urban design or a related discipline.
Essential Eligibility Requirements / Special Appointment Requirements Appointment is subject to a satisfactory National Police Clearance.
Candidates possessing international qualifications must provide assessment by the Overseas Qualification Assessment Unit (OQU) from Department of Workforce Development and Training WA or OQU assessment from another state for approval as an equivalent by the Executive Director, Department of Commerce.
Possession of a current Western Australian 'C' or 'C-A' Class Driver’s Licence or equivalent, and the ability to travel in response to organisational needs. This requirement continues for the duration of employment in this position and from time to time production of the licence may be required upon request by the Department.
