SUBJECT – S.St.CHAPTER 3 – THE
NEIGHBOURS OF OUR EARTHWEEK-1 ASSIGNMENTS
GENERAL EXPLANATION OF CHAPTER-3
“THE Neighbours OF OUR EARTH”
Introduction: - Our Earth is not alone in
the sky. The Sun and the Moon are our
neighbours. During the daytime, we see
the Sun in the sky and at night, we see
the Moon in the sky. The Sun rises in the
East and sets in the West.
We also see many twinkling stars in the
sky at night. These stars are very far
away from us. That is why they look like
tiny dots of light.
The Sun is also a star. It looks bigger as
it is nearer to the Earth than the stars.
The Sun : The Sun is the nearest star to
Earth. It is made up of hot and burning
gases. That is why it is called a ball of
fire. All the planets move around the
Sun.
The Sun is important for us because:-
It gives us heat and light. It is the main source of energy for
the Earth. This energy is called solar energy.
The plants use this energy to make food for themselves.
The family of the Sun is called the Solar System. The main members of the family are the Sun, the Planets and their satellites, meteors and comets. The Sun
is the largest member of the family. It is very big in size.
THE SOLAR SYSTEM
The Moon: The Moon is the satellite of
the Earth. It moves around the Earth in
the same way as the Earth moves
around the Sun.
The moon takes about one month to
complete one full round of the Earth.
The shape of the Moon is round like a
ball.
The Moon does not have its own heat
and light. It reflects the light which it
receives from the Sun. The Moon has no
atmosphere. Thus life is not possible on
the Moon.
FIGURE 1 THE MOON
The Planets: Planets are heavenly
bodies that revolve around the Sun.
They move around the Sun on a set path
known as Orbit. The planets do not
have their own heat and light. They get
heat and light from the Sun.
The Earth takes one year to complete
one full round of the Sun. The Earth is a
unique planet in the Solar System as it
has air and water which is necessary for
all living things to survive.
The Stars: A star is a huge ball of hot
burning gases. It gives out heat and
light. There are millions of stars in the
universe. The twinkling stars that we
see at night are actually very big in size.
They are very far away from us, that’s
why they look so tiny. There is a very
bright star in the sky. It is called the Pole
Star.
FIGURE 2 POLE STAR
Some stars in the sky appear to form
groups. These groups look like figures of
animals and other things. Such group is
called a Constellation. Some of the well
known constellations are – Leo, The
Great Bear, and Orion.
The white band of stars in the sky at
night is the Milky Way Galaxy. The Solar
System is the part of the Milky Way
Galaxy. It is also called Akash Ganga.
There are millions of galaxies in the
universe.
