European Coatings Show 2013 keeps up the pace>

The coatings industry is looking on the bright side in 2013, despite the slight economic downturn. As the ECS enters its third day, more eager visitors flock to the stands or return to discover further novelties. The definitive figures for the ECS will be published shortly after the show closes. The number of exhibitors totals 962 from 42 nations. The leading exhibitor countries after Germany (351) are China (155), the Netherlands (56) and Great Britain (46). Vincentz Network signs cooperation with Turkish coatings association BOSAD

Looking forward to a good collaboration: representatives of the Turkish coatings association Bosad have come to the European Coatings Show yesterday to sign a cooperation contract with Vincentz Network. As part of the agreement, Vincentz Network will support Bosad in planning and organising the congress in conjunction with the trade show “Paint Istanbul 2014”. The signatories expressed their greatest confidence that their cooperation will benefit both parties and lead to a successful show and congress next year. The contract was signed in a cordial atmosphere, as both parties have known each other for some time. The signatories (from left to right):  Ahmet Yiğitbaşı (Vice Chairman, Bosad), Ahmet Faik Bitlis (Chairman, Bosad) and Jürgen Nowak (Publisher, Vincentz Network). "Paintistanbul" takes place every two years and has developed into the most important congress and exhibition for the coatings and paint industry in the region.

Colour, variety and forward thinking

Inspired ideas and progressive technologies abound at the ECS 2013.The dull weather was perhaps a stroke of luck for the ECS. The colour in the halls contrasted so strongly with the grey skies outside that it was a still stronger inducement to remain indoors and enjoy the enormous variety of exhibits. The trend towards differentiation and individualisation can be seen both in the exhibits and the stands. Colour and appearance are a big differentiator and a very important selling argument. “With new technologies, you can develop new colour proposals,” said Michael Bauer, Head of Marketing and Communications at Schlenk. “We produce effect pigments based on aluminium and copper. Our new brand meets customer needs,” he continued. He showed how the addition of an aluminium effect pigment to a brown metallic shade on a vintage Citroën car produced a completely novel, sparkling yet discreet appearance perfectly suited to the vehicle.

Energy-saving resin for car-refinish and high-end 2K markets

DSM Coating Resins developed a so-called “Energy Save” concept to increase reactivity for 2-component car-refinish clearcoats. Normally the reactivity is increased by adding more catalyst to the 2-component system. This has many disadvantages, such as shorter pot life, adhesion and appearance failures. The “Energy Save” concept developed a resin for 2-component car-refinish topcoats without these disadvantages. This resin is called  "Hybrane® CY-245 E-75" and is partly based on DSM-patented technology. When a car painter uses a paint based on this resin, the curing temperature can be reduced from 60 to 40 °C without compromising the properties. Although developed for VOC 420g/l compliant car-refinish applications, this resin can also be used in othermarkets that use 2K polyurethane coatings under controlled application conditions, such as ACE (agriculture, construction and earth-moving), commercial vehicles (trucks and busses) and general industry.

Weight or volumetric filling? Mix and match!

Belgian company De Vree designs and manufactures semi-automatic and fully automatic filling equipment for industrial fluids such as paints, solvents, thinners, hardeners, adhesives, wood stains, wood preservers etc. De Vree is the preferred supplier to a number of world-renowned manufacturers. Recent new developments include machines that combine volumetric and weight filling to increase both the filling speed and filling accuracy of compressible and high viscosity products. A combined filler of this type, the V230H, will make its first appearance at this year’s ECS in Nürnberg.

Grinding into the nano range

Fritsch presents its planetary mills series “premium line” for grinding of coloured pigments down to the nanometer range. With this mill rotation speeds of up to 1100 rpm and acceleration of 95 times the force of gravity can be achieved. The resulting energy application is roughly 150 % greater than classic planetary mills. The bowl and lid form a solid unit: the grinding bowls are closed gas-tight with one motion and with a second motion, they are safely locked in the mill. The grinding bowls position themselves and snap securely into place. The grinding chamber opens and closes automatically and independently rotates the bowl mounts in a convenient position for handling. The mill automatically detects the inserted grinding bowls via a special RFID chip, then optimises the rotation speed and prevents impermissible grinding settings.

Resins that resist fire and high temperatures

“Vinnapas LL3112” has been introduced as a copolymer binder for waterborne intumescent coatings that protect load-bearing steel structures in the event of fire. Its pronounced foaming and expansion and long-term foam stability are coupled with improved adhesion and strength. Coatings with fire resistance class F120 (heat protection for up to 120 minutes) can be developed. “Silres MPF 52E” is a new alkoxy-functional silicone resin emulsion for heat-resistant protective coatings. Low-solvent or even solvent-free coatings can be formulated. Applications range from pots and pans to ovens, pipes, plant and machine parts. It may be used to modify organic polymers, creating systems that will resist up to 200 °C, or as a sole binder it will resist temperatures of up to 500 °C.
