Almighty God, whose blesséd Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as thou knowest the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find thee mighty to save; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Book of Genesis Ed JonesGod said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” (9: 8-17)

Ed JonesTo you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;

my God, I put my trust in you; *let me not be humiliated,nor let my enemies triumph over me.

Let none who look to you be put to shame; *let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes.

Show me your ways, O LORD, *and teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth and teach me, *for you are the God of my salvation;in you have I trusted all the day long.

Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, *for they are from everlasting.

Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; *remember me according to your loveand for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.

Gracious and upright is the LORD; *therefore he teaches sinners in his way.

He guides the humble in doing right *and teaches his way to the lowly.

All the paths of the LORD are love and faithfulness *to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

A Reading from the First Letter of Peter Tom MinetChrist also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. (3:18-22)

Please sing along at homeSequence Hymn 150, “Forty days and forty nights” Forty days and forty nightsthou wast fasting in the wild;forty days and forty nightstempted, and yet undefiled.

Should not we thy sorrow shareand from worldly joys abstain,fasting with unceasing prayer,strong with thee to suffer pain?

Then if Satan on us press,Jesus, Savior, hear our call!Victor in the wilderness,grant we may not faint or fall!

So shall we have peace divine:holier gladness ours shall be;round us, too, shall angels shine,such as ministered to thee.

Keep, O keep us, Savior dear,ever constant by thy side;that with thee we may appearat the eternal Eastertide.

The Gospel: Mark 1:9-13People’s response before the Gospel Glory be to thee, O Lord.In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. People’s response after the Gospel Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon The Rev. Candace Sandfort

Said by allThe Nicene Creed p. 327, BCPI believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;

Our Mission at St. John’s: To provide support & love in the areas of poverty, hunger, homelessness, & education focusing on those in need in our own backyard.

This week’s highlighted ministry: St. Paul’s in Paterson

St. Paul’s in Paterson

During Lent, we will focus on hunger and the local programs St John's supports. St. Paul's, MESH and the Human Needs Food Pantry all provide

hands-on opportunities for us in. This week we feature St. Paul's.

Volunteers Needed for St. Paul's!Thanks to the many who have contributed to our St. Paul's ministry over the past many months. Because of your generosity we continue to provide meals for the St. Paul Men's Shelter (in Paterson), every 2nd Friday of the month.

We are currently looking for volunteers for April 9, May 14 and June 11 - to donate $$, prepare and/or deliver dinner to St. Paul's. It is truly a simple and rewarding way to get involved with the community and do something nice for someone else, so please consider helping!

Several volunteers (you!) sign up on our Google sheet to cook (or purchase) a portion of the dinner (entrée, vegetable, rolls, or milk etc.), We bring these to St John's by 5 p.m. Friday. Another volunteer then picks up the food at 5 p.m. and drives 20 minutes to Paterson to deliver the dinner.

Please sign up to volunteer for April 9, May 14 or June 11 by clicking on this link and entering what you will bring on the spreadsheet. If you cannot volunteer but would like to donate instead, please contribute by using the donations link on the St. John's home page.

If you have any questions at all, please reach out to Christine Andrukonis by email ([email protected]) or text me at 347-423-3066 (you can call too but I'm quicker on text).
