Interdisciplinary Learning Through our IDL topic of Space we will… Learn key facts about the sun and the planets of our Solar System. We will explore the rotation and orbit of Planet Earth. Explore the significance of the I.S.S as a scientific achievement and life as an astronaut (Tim Peake) Learn about the events of the ‘Space Race’ to the moon and its historical importance. What I will be learning in P5 Term 1 2020-2021 Curriculum Areas Literacy – Listening and Talking We are learning to develop skills in listening and contributing our ideas and opinions and progress our discussion techniques. Literacy - Reading Improving our fluency, accuracy, and confidence by reading fiction texts in our reading groups and with reading partners. We are also developing our comprehension skills by locating evidence in a text and using our inferences skills to demonstrate our understanding. Literacy - Writing We are deepening our understanding of VCOP (with a focus on connectives and punctuation) which will allow us to write with greater grammatical accuracy and further engage the reader in our writing. Numeracy Developing our understanding of place value up to hundreds of thousands; rounding to the nearest 10,100 and 1000.We are also learning to use ‘chimney sums’ as a formal written strategy for addition and subtraction problems. Maths Learning the 8 cardinal compass points, NSEW. Describing a turn using the terms; clockwise, anti- clockwise, quarter, half, full and exploring the degrees in a turn (e.g. 90 degrees is a quarter turn). We are also learning to read and plot coordinates within the first quadrant. Health & Wellbeing Continuing the ‘Building Resilience’ program with ‘Looking at the Bright Side’.
