JUNE 2014 The summer season is really upon us - now all we need is the sun! This month sees the first wedding booking in our newly refurbished clubhouse. Megan and Will are using the clubhouse for their reception on the 21 st June. This will mean that there will be NO access to the top floor of the building from Thursday 19 th until Sunday 22 nd to allow for cleaning and setting up. There will be no Nipper BBQ on the 20 th June – but doughnuts and soft drinks will be available. This is a necessary part of a sustainable programme for the club allowing us to meet rising running and maintenance costs. The club expenses are currently over £300 per week and with no public funding all of these costs must be met by the members and fundraising. Membership only provides a small amount per person once insurances and GB membership have been met, so hopefully increased hiring of the clubhouse can go some way towards meeting costs and allowing the club to continue in the long term. The club house is available for hire for weddings; parties; training; meetings; and functions – spread the word and speak to our Treasurer Sue Bray for details; availability; and cost. Reminder: No wetsuits should be worn in the clubhouse! This is a longstanding club rule and must be adhered to by ALL club members. Our Safeguarding Officers (Andrea Hewitt and Steven Larkins) would also like to remind all members, parents and supporters that changing areas are ‘safeguarding areas’ during nipper and youth training sessions. This means for your protection and the protection of the young people you should not being using the changing rooms at these times – even if you have a current DBS certificate. You may of course use the disabled changing room. Anyone who is a full member and wishes to undergo a DBS check, please see Andrea to find out about the process. The club now has a bar and most importantly a bar licence. A small number of volunteers have been trained and the bar will be open after Nipper training and at other occasions as appropriate. Please remember that NO under 18’s will be served alcohol and you may be asked for ID if you appear to be under 25 – in line with ‘Challenge 25’ guidelines. Full adult members will be able to buy drinks at a reduced club rate – this may be another reason to pay your membership fees! JUNE 2014

The summer season is really upon us - now all we need is the sun!

This month sees the first wedding booking in our newly refurbished clubhouse. Megan and Will are using the clubhouse for their reception on the 21st June. This will mean that there will be NO access to the top floor of the building from Thursday 19th

until Sunday 22nd to allow for cleaning and setting up. There will be no Nipper BBQ on the 20th June – but doughnuts and soft drinks will be available. This is a necessary part of a sustainable programme for the club allowing us to meet rising running and maintenance costs.

Message from Head Club Coach – George Haynes

Hello guys. So, here it is, ‘summer’, I stand here, in my new home village of Portreath in a hoodie, track suit pants and Ugg boots. Oh we love June don’t we!. But that’s not going to stop us!So I have been home and started coaching now for a month and a half and I’m LOVING it!!So firstly I’d just like to say thank you. Thank you too all that attend training, just seeing guys attend my sessions is a privilege, watching improvement, enjoyment and hunger to compete is fantastic! So our new monthly training programme for June is out now! Please take a minute to look at the training programme on Facebook or the webpage.

We also have a Facebook page, Portreath Surf Squad, with each months programme. Please ask to join the private group or private message me and I’ll put you on it. These sessions are for everyone to enjoy, we aren’t just a competitive club, a lot of people seem to think that, and that annoys me. I want the club to be a place where people enjoy to go! We have great facilities now, so come and enjoy them, new members, old members, come down, get involved and enjoy our favourite beach a little bit more. Once again thanks for the support, and I hope to see you in the water!

George

Final Reminder:The club water craft (boards and skis) can only be used during club sessions and only for the age group it was intended. Anyone wanting to use club kit outside of club sessions must be closely supervised by a full club member with a current NARS beach lifeguard award. This person if agreeable must sign the

kit out of the clubhouse and is totally and personally responsible for the whole time that kit is in the water or on the beach. No parent without NARS and full club membership can fulfil this role.
