Traders from North Africa and other countries around the Mediterranean came to Timbuktu to buy and sell.

Camels were perfect answer. Camels can carry heavy loads. They can keep their footing in sliding sand. They can go a long time without water. If treated well, camels are patient. On flat ground, they can run very fast.

QUESTION 5: WEST AFRICA BEFORE EUROPEAN SLAVE TRADE

Slavery was part of everyday life in Africa. 3500 years ago, Egyptians used slaves to build their pyramids. West African tribes enslaved captives when they conducted wars and raids against one another. This was a way of producing wealth in Africa and slaves became the symbols of wealth.

Land was owned by communities and many slaves were needed to work on the farms. Some of these slaves were criminals or people who did not pay their debts. Most of the slaves certain rights: they could marry, inherit goods from their owners and they could have their own slaves. But the slaves that were taken to distant East by Arabs did not have these rights

Joseph Cinqué: A rice farmer from Sierra Leone and the son of a local chief. Being captured by slave traders and shipped (Amistad) to Cuba. Harsh conditions, prisoners would be eaten at the end of the journey (cruel joke). They plan to escape. Arrested. After a long legal battle their innocence was proven and freedom was won. They were released.

Harriet Tubman: She was forced to start working at the age of 5. Head injury sustained. Got involved with city organizers of the Underground Railway. She led slaves to Canada where they could be free. She was fearless. Got nickname "Moses".

John Brown: His family was very religious. He worked for the Underground Railroad. Strongly opposed to slavery. Become the leader of the anti-slaughter egg yolk liqueur. Set aside refugee slaves. Being captured, tried and accused of treason. He was hanged.
