Learning Objective: - At the end of the session the learner will be able to
At the end of this session the learner will be able to 1. Create a performance evaluation – Rubric using Rubistar
Introduction What is a Rubric?
A rubric is a simple way to set up a grading criteria for different assignments
It defines in writing what is expected of the students to get a particular grade on any assignment
It divides the work in compartments where there is a clear description about each component at different levels.
Each compartment can be called as the categories and the grading will depend on the criteria assigned for each category.
Rubrics help students and teachers define "quality." When students use rubrics regularly to judge their own work, they
begin to accept more responsibility for the end product. It cuts down on the "am I done yet?" questions.
Rubrics reduce the time teachers spend grading student work and makes it easier for teachers to explain to students why they got the grade they did and what they can do to improve.
Parents usually like the rubrics concept once they understand it, and they find rubrics useful when helping with homework. As one teacher says: "They know exactly what their child needs to do to be successful."
What can I grade using a Rubric?Rubric is used to evaluate
learner’s performance
Assignment such as Papers, Projects/Group Projects Oral Presentation Artistic Performance.
Why Rubistar? Rubistar is a tool to help the teacher who wants to use rubrics but does
not have the time to develop them from scratch. Rubistar provides generic rubrics that can simply be printed and used
for many typical projects and research assignments. What Can I do with Rubistar?
1. Creating a Rubric Create a Rubric and save it to the online reservoir Modify an existing Rubric Create a Rubric without saving it Analyze an existing Rubric Delete the Rubric.2. for Teachers/Evaluators Create a Teacher profile Modify an existing Teacher profile Access the existing Rubrics
What you need before you start using Rubistar Evaluators can setup a new Rubistar account online Login to the application using valid credentials Prepare a list of categories for creating the Rubric Prepare a list of criteria against which the categories will be evaluated.
Let’s start with Rubistar Create a user profile for the evaluator. On first time login, the evaluator will see their own information
No Rubrics have been created yet, user will not see any Rubric information
Create a Rubric from the existing templates User can select from the range of existing templates to setup a Rubric. You can modify the most appropriate template to match your
assignment.
Customizing our Rubric User can customize the Rubric by providing information like name of
the Rubric, condition data, etc.
Create Categories Categories allow the evaluators assign the areas on which the
assignment will be graded. You can use one of the existing categories or setup custom ones to suit
the assignment to be evaluated. To adjust custom categories, modify the name and the description of
the categories as shown below.
How to create a good Rubric List the criteria that will be used in assessing the assignment
The criteria you use should be related to the learning outcome(s) that you are assessing. Example, 1:- a musical performance might be rated for intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and tone quality. Example 2:- Oral presentation might be rated for content, organization, delivery and language.
Be sure that your criteria are explicit. "Neatness" would not be a good criterion because the term "neat" is not explicit enough. What is neatness? Avoid ambiguity.
Determine your performance levels. Examples of performance levels may be:Descriptors (In Progress, Basic, Proficient, Advanced)Numbers (1, 2, 3, 4)
Write a description for each performance level.
Describe the different levels of performance that match each criterion. You may want to start with the best and worst levels of quality, and then fill in the middle levels based on your knowledge of common problems.
Try to articulate what makes the good assignments good and the poor assignments poor.Submit your Rubric
Once you have completed setting up the categories and the description, click on the Submit button to save your Rubric.
What to do with your completed Rubric You can either choose to “Make Available Online” or “Print or
Download” When you Make Available Online, the Rubric will be available in the
teacher’s pool of Rubrics. When you Print or Download, the Rubric will not available online, but
evaluators can use it in the form of excel sheets.
You’re first Rubric Your first Rubric is now ready. The system will assign a unique ID to
each Rubric which can be used to retrieve the same Rubric. You can also choose the other options presented on the screen to
continue using RubiStar
Evaluators Home page Once the Rubric has been created, it will be listed in the list of Rubric’s
on the evaluators home page You can perform any of the available options on an existing Rubric
using the tasks available.
You can view the existing Rubric by clicking on the name or the ID of the rubric.
